NEW ORDER'S PARTY ROLLS ON
Having emerged triumphant with their comeback album "Get Ready" last year, New Order are back again with the aptly-titled Here To Stay single.
Taken from the soundtrack of Factory Records biopic 24 Hour Party People - in which the band are played by actors such as John Simm and Ralf Little - it cements the band as a current force to be reckoned with.
On the eve of the film's release, Peter Hook tells all about their return....
Here To Stay - a proper title, or is this a one-off return for New Order? We liked the sentiment of the title, it's true. The single's a slight cheat, as we worked on it with The Chemical Brothers before they did their album.
What were The Chemicals like to work with? It's funny, as we've known them for years, then once we were in the studio with them they suddenly got overawed - "I can't believe we're in the studio with New Order!!". Once we'd calmed them down, it was a good relaxed atmosphere.
How's the atmosphere among the band? Honestly, the best it's ever been. We start work on a new album in September. It's the first time I can remember when we won't be nervous worrying if we're going to get on with one another.
Are you worried that a creative tension will be missed? I was worried about that before Get Ready. Me and Bernard had become good friends again, but I was thinking it'd all go wrong once we bagan working. The reverse was true.
Was a New Order reunion inevitable? Tony Wilson thinks so. When he heard we were doing Get Ready, he said; "All bands make at least one bad album. New Order haven't, so you had to get back together to make your bad album." Get Ready wasn't it. So up yours, Wilson!
Do you miss anything about the Factory and Hacienda days? I miss getting into clubs for nothing. I don't miss working with Tony Wilson, who was off his head spending New Order's money on mad Factory decisions.
How accurate a depiction of Factory is the 24 Hour Party People movie? New Order split because we tore each other apart over Factory's money problems. You always take it out on your nearest and dearest. So to see a film joking about how every copy of "Blue Monday" lost 5pence is funny to the outsider, but had me thinking "OK, I know, I know..." It's a good film. Sean Harris as Ian Curtis is excellent, the scenes where the rest of us realise he's epileptic are very harrowing.
You've had run-ins with Steve Coogan. How good is he as Tony Wilson? For the first half-hour of the film, I couldn't get over thinking "It's that idiot Coogan!". To give him credit, he plays Tony very well. When he's got the sunglasses on, he IS Tony Wilson!
What about Ralf Little playing you? Yeah, he's fine. I wish Ralf would stop running away whenever we're at the same parties, though. Don't be scared, Ralf, you did a good job! I howl with laughter when I see him scurrying off!
As New Order are getting on so well, do you regret splitting for eight years? We'd got so caught up in factory's nonsense at the time we couldn't bear to be in the same room. We had to go away and do our own thing first.
What did you learn from your bands? How difficult Bernard's job is. Before, I'd be a pain in the backside if he was having trouble on a lyric or a vocal. "Stop moaning!" was as helpful as I got. When I had to do lyrics and sing in Monaco, I quickly thought.. "Help!"...
How different is life on London Records compared to New Order's Factory days..? After 20 years, it's nice to finally be a little professional, isn't it? The difference between Pete Tong and Tony Wilson as label bosses is that there's a lot less shouting matches now.....
The future's looking rosy then...? Yes, but the beauty of being in New Order is that we might get bored with all this professionalism. There's every chance we'll start our own label in a year to sell records at car boot sales!....
