What,how and/or who first turned you onto NO/JD?

Thought it might be interesting to read some accounts of the fans,as to how they first became fans of the band...

I appreciate many of us are of different ages,and my own may or may not be a typical 32 year olds first encounter. Basically,I remember vividly hearing True Faith being played by the older brother of a very good mate of mine.This necter sound coming from his bedroom while I was round at their house...The lad was 4 years older than me,and bang into his New Order already then(about 1987 or 88)..I thought it sounded fantastic,and started hearing it on the radio alot...Got myself Substance on vynil and played the thing to death,discovering Temptation and Ceremony were a revelation...My own older brother was a U2 fan, so I was well grateful to my mates brother,and countered our Tony's Cock Rock with Ceremony and Temptation from my bedroom,to my delight and our Mam's despair

The reason I mention it now is cos our mam was round recently, and reminded me of it while Temptation was playing on a playlist on my PC..She remembered

Both bands happened at about the same time for me. It was only last May that, after getting really interested in Public Image Ltd., I started listening to the PiL station on Launch, which played lots of JD/NO as well. I'd heard LWTUA before and liked it okay, but it was after hearing songs like "Something Must Break" and "Isolation" that I realised that JD were definitely something different worth investigating.

I liked the NO stuff that the station played, but one day I heard TPK and was absolutely mesmerised. I loved the dissonance in the synths during the chorus, and how it seemed like something I'd heard before years ago (though I'm not sure I ever actually had). The station wouldn't play it again though, and I was desperate to hear it again until I finally got my hands on Substance.

To be fair,its primarily your old fella's bassplay which has kept me interested I reckon

Being off school one day and they played the video for Bizarre love triangle on a kids tv programme,and instantly became fixed to both the video and song. Purchased it on 12" vinyl that weekend with my pocket money and then when Substance/True Faith came out became a massive fan.

1982, I heard Temptation on the radio, I thought I've gotta go and get that, so I went to the shop and tried to buy an album with Temptation on it! of course I couldn't, so I bought the 12" single, then Movement and then the 7" of Temptation, because this was the verson I had actually heard on the Radio. Happy Days!

NO- I first heard Orgy's cover of BM in 1999. I like the lyrics so much, so a couple of years later I dowloaded it through Grokster. On the same day, NO's version came up in the search results and I downloaded it also. From that day on, prefered NO's version of Blue Monday.

JD- I downloaded LWTUA from the Donnie Darko Soundtrack. That song took a few days to get used to, and I love it.

24 Hour Party People and the soundtrack.

I had heard Blue monday on the radio and at the "youth" disco in 1983 and eventually went and bought a copy as i loved it and was mesmerized by it.But that was as far as my interest went at that point.I was aware they had Power ,Corruption And Lies out but didnt have any interest in buying or hearing it ,strangely enough.But then my brother went and bought it and when he first played it i was in the house at the time and was completely blown away by Age Of Consent.It was the best music i had ever heard.Then as the rest of the album played i was just as stunned by the other songs on it like The Village ,586 ,Your Silent Face and Leave Me Alone.Those songs and that synth/guitar blend with the sounds was far more to my taste than Blue Monday actually was.I always thought if my brother had never bought that album would i have got into them?

Of course in those days (83/84) trying to find anything out about this new band i had discovered was almost impossible.Just the odd scrap of info in the music press every few months and the odd book (An Ideal For Living and the History in Cuttings thingies).

A kid 2 years above me in school called Gary Shand (RIP ) got me into them.

It was the week after Brotherhood had come out. Initially it was all the vinyl artwork as well as the music that got me interested. I was permanantly hooked by the time TF came out.

Much repect to Gary. Much respect to NO.

Columbia House actually had an alternative catalogue issued at some point, and through that I ordered Closer in September 2000, having no prior knowledge of the group. It's been a wonderful exploration since then.

Well he once mentioned in an interview his favourite band was New Order so I had to check them out. But at the time (1987) I was gutted cause they sounded nothing like PSB

True Faith 1987. Saw them on telly and bought Substance on cassette whilst on holiday. Loved it. Went home and bought BM and LWTUA on 12" from the local vinyl emporium and played them to death. Then Technique came out and I was hooked...

well i've told this tale before. there was a girl at school who really like them and i really liked her.

A friend who worked at a record store played me the 7" single of Transmission back in late 79 (he'd bought it cause of the sleeve).

When I was 11, me mom got the Threesome soundtrack, and BLT came on and really opened my eyes....had no idea this song was made 8 years beforehand!
Then, later that summer, VH1 did a 4th of July A-Z, where they fookin showed ALL their videos over the course of like 5 days This was before they purged most of their archeives (or boxed them up for VH1 Classic)....anyways I digress...I knew New Order was coming up, so I set my VCR to record, came back, and True Faith was on.

Stagnation for some time, got Substance for X-Mas '99, and found NOOL late '02...and you know the rest

A friend of mine got me a compilation cassette with all sort of music in 1985, Alphaville, New Order, DM and more. Both Blue Monday and Perfect Kiss were on that cassette and both songs simply outshone all others. In 1985 these songs were just complete breakthrough, so cool and massive. Few weeks later I got the Low life album which soon became my favorite. Then Brotherhood came out and I remember it surprised me to find the rockier side of New Order. That album was just one of the best in 1986 and I must say it has aged well. Then I started digging up more on this mysterious band. Found an album which didn´t seem to have a name, so I called it Roses (PCL). Factus 8 shortly followed and the beauty of Procession and Temptation only made me a bigger New Order fan. -At that time it was difficult to get any info on the band. Then after Substance, which introduced me to Ceremony, remixed BLT and True Faith there was no turning back and I have been a NO nut since then. Have not found a band since then, that has had as much impact on me. Stone Roses, Chemical Bros, Prefab Sprout come close but not as close as the Order.

I was always aware of NO, my dad was a passing fan, had Substance on cassette, and i even recently found an Electronic cassette. I think as a designer, he's a fan of Peter Saville, so NO had always been around, i remember TF as a little 'un.

Few years ago i heard LWTUA in a skate video, so i got into Joy Division a bit, then i heard AOC on another skate video, bough PC&L, then i've been hooked ever since

sigh. I knew it would come to this, I would have to share these painfully bland stories.

NO - Mtv. simple as that. remember being transfixed by the music and imagery of Blue Monday, BLT, and True Faith.

JD - Nine inch Nails. I was obsessed with NIN in 1992 and I had to collect anything and everything that was associated with them. When they did "Dead souls" for the crow soundtrack (with no mention of JD in the linear) A pretty goth girl I knew told me I should check out the original, so I bought Substance and the rest is history.

I remembered BLT and True Faith being out when I was a kid. Then in the early 90s, VH1 or MTV (when they still showed videos) was doing some sort of A-Z and showing *every* video they owned...well, they showed New Order and their music really appealed to me and, to be honest, Bernard being so attractive didn't hurt either Once I started listening to New Order, I discovered Joy Division as well.

wasn't until i seen "24 hour party people" i really knew what they meant and just how fucking good they were

My brother bought BM, i liked, then he bought confusion, and I liked it, then TLU came out, I thought I'd buy it before my bro did even though I hadn't heard it, I gleefully showed him it and put it on expecting to hear something like BM or confusion, at first I was confused by it, but it grew on me, my brother said it was shite and never bought anymore NO, but I flipped it over and played lonesome tonight and just fell in love with hooky's bass, and barneys gobbing skills, (very rebelious at 15). Then saved up and bought the back catalogue over the next few years, got into JD, but it made me depressed, so loved it when they cheered up and the acid house scene arrived, then things get very hazey!!!!

I was fascinated by their performance of BM on TOTP and then the TPK video, (particularly Gillian) but intimidated by them as well! Didn't 'do' anything really until I heard BLT, went into HMV to find it and looked through all their 12" covers. Bought a few of them just for the design (Mr Saville would be proud!)

It just continued from there, never met anyone else who was into them at the time, or not whole-heartedly anyway. As I've said on here before - I then realised that NO t-shirts attracted male attention!

Of course I don't need to justify my love of their music.

I heard Blue Monday on the radio, a rare radio station that played good stuff, around 1992. I went out and bought Substance (CD) and I was hooked from there. It took me a while after that before I even know of JD.

Valentines Day 1979 I think it was. I was 13 and pissed off that this girl I thought I was in love with hadn't sent me a valentine card. John Peel on the radio to drown my sorrows. Some song playing with the singer going on about how he remembered when he was young. Bet you fucking do, I thought. Bet this shit never happened to you. I was hooked.
