JD bootleg afficionados have for many years now been divided about the "unreleased song" that was played at Erics in 1979 and is widely available on bootleg.
I took the opportunity to listen to what is a very good recording on some decent kit over the weekend, and can confirm that it wasn't an unreleased song, more a 90 second jam while the bass amp was repaired. After Transmission finishes, the Disorder siren (used between Feb-Aug 79) starts up, but there's no bass. Cue a short pause, and Ian saying very quietly "there's no bass"......Barney took an Iggy riff, Steve basically tapped out a similar pattern to that they would use on Sister Ray, and Ian mumbled a few random lines from his little book of nothing. No Hooky until the very end, by which time the bass was working. They then proceeded to do Disorder, which was the scheduled next song.
Those who have a copy of New Order at Blackpool 1980 will know of a virtually identical experience with the bass amp - Barney at least telling us why on this occasion !
