What is Your New Order Top 20 and Why?!

Don't know whether anyone has done a thread like this before but what are your Top 20 New Order tunes and why do you like them? My New Order Top 20 is as follows

1. Fine Time - NO was a major influence upon Dance music and they acknowledged their debt to Dance culture with this monster which IMO encapsulates NO's use of technology, Rock and Dance music influences! 2. The Perfect Kiss - Totally love TPK and the live version of the song they did when filming for the video is absolutely awesome! 3. Blue Monday (Original and 88 versions) - The holy grail of NO and still would blow away many a Dance record if released today! 4. Vanishing Point - This should have been an A-side single and Round And Round the B-side. Again NO's Ibiza influences are strong here! 5. True Faith - The tune that got me into NO and a classic video from Anton Corbjin as well! 6. Run 2 - Indie Dance how it should be done and showed the way to the Stone Roses and Happy Monday's back in '89! 7. Confusion - Like all the versions of this tune including the Pump Panel Reconstruction mix made famous in Blade! 8. Crystal - A great tune for NO to make their comeback from their mid/late '90's hiatus. Wished the rest of Get Ready was as good! 9. Regret - The best track from the Republic album IMO! 10. Round And Round - Still prefer Fine Time and Vanishing Point from Technique but a great record and a Dance tune from 1989 you wouldn't be embarrassed to play loud today! 11. Temptation - A defining tune from Movement which IMO ushered in NO's Electro Rock era in the 1980's! 12. Here To Stay - Produced by the Chemical Brothers and IMO perfect for the soundtrack of 24 Hour Party People! 13. Elegia - A great song to come down from a night out to just as they did in 1986! 14. Ceremony - The JD song that never was but a classic NO song from Movement! 15. Truth (Peel Sessions version) - IMO the defining track from Movement which saw NO's love of electronics mix with JD's melancholy! 16. Ruined In a Day - Again one of the better tracks from Republic, good video too! 17. State Of The Nation - I know some NOOLers love or hate this song. I quite like it! 18. Your Silent Face - It's a good NO tune to chill out and close a gig to! 19. In A Lonely Place - The missing link between JD and NO IMO wished I'd seen it live at Ally Pally '98! 20. Guilt Is A Useless Emotion - IMO should have been a choice for a single (more so than Jetstream) from Waiting For The Sirens Call. Still given the on-off release of Turn?!

I also liked Bizzare Love Triangle, Theives Like Us, Someone Like You, Waiting For The Sirens Call, Turn, Krafty and Leave Me Alone which just missed my Top 20 and what is your New Order Top 20? Cheers!

It's been done before, as a top 10 favorite NO tunes. Nevertheless, I'll think about it and come up with a list (eventually). It'll be interesting to see how different it is from my top 10 list from 2 months ago! Didn't list reasons in the other thread either, so mayube that'll make people really think about it.

By the way, your list kicks ass, though I don't know how you left Bizarre Love Triangle off!

Some good choices here and this post is just to see what NO tunes people like and why you like them. Mind you there are another 10 tracks I could say are pretty cool so it was hard to put together a definitive 20!

Yeah I made a cock up with these tracks being on Movement I mentioned Movement probably due to these tracks being performed on the New York 81 DVD. I stand corrected & thanks for the contributions!

1. Perfect Kiss – perfect in every way. Their defining moment for me, an electronic symphony with a big orgasmic ending. Never beaten.

2. Ceremony – chiming the new way forward, a brave choice for a new beginning. Awesome.

3. Leave Me Alone – the guitar sound takes the listener somewhere else, it ceases to be just a song.

4. Let’s Go (instrumental only) – archetypal New Order, the combination of melodic bass, guitar and keys. Fabulous stuff.

5. Waiting For The Sirens Call – melody, in-tune singing of lyrics that almost make sense, the complete package!

6. Regret – stunning comeback song, and a real statement of intent. Contains all the best bits of New Order in one song.

7. Procession – uplifting, catchy and melodic, with a killer bassline. Great song!

8. Dream Attack – lovely melodic song with plaintive lyrics, Bernard sounds genuinely trying to atone for past sins.

9. Age Of Consent – contains all the right bits, plus that humour injection that makes them stand out.

10. Turn – just how do they keep writing these perfect guitar pop songs?

11. Sunrise – a beast of a song, and great to play live!

12. Thieves Like Us – almost symphonic in the string synth arrangement.

13. Primitive Notion – hints at bygone days with the arrangement, underrated powerhouse of a song.

14. Crystal – the noughties anthem for me, makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when they get to the “we’re like Crystal” bit.

15. Mr Disco – throwaway pop that I’ve never been able to throw away just yet!

16. Your Silent Face – the chillout song, beautiful and uplifting.

17. Blue Monday – can’t leave it out!

18. In A Lonely Place – an evil song, so cold

19. Vanishing Point – underrated pop nugget, should have been a single.

20. We All Stand – something totally different at the time, there is so much going on in the song that it is often written off as being crap, merely because it is different!

1. HURT – Easily the best thing they have done
2. CEREMONY – Fantastic jump up and down sing a long tune
3. CHOSEN TIME – Sublime
4. TEMPTATION – De de de de dee
5. KW1 – As the title say’s, a nod in the direction of Ralf and co

1. Bizarre Love Triangle- Great dance beat, cryptic yet cool lyrics & title

2. Regret- Combines all the best elements of New Order-synth, guitars, drums, esoteric lyrics. Wistful yet uplifting and hopeful

3. The Perfect Kiss-Great beat & lyrics

4. Dream Attack- Beatutiful song, especially guitars

5. Blue Monday- Great dance beat, helped popularize drum machines, very memorable bass riff by Hooky. Important song even though not as popular among NOOLers.

6. Fine Time- Great dance beat. "I never met a girl with all her own teeth."

7. Confusion- Great dance beat

8. Love Less- Beautiful, sad song. Both lyrically & musically.

9. Guilty Partner- Great lyrics (I always know what it takes to make you my lover), great guitars

10. Shellshock- Great dance beat

11. Here to Stay-Wonderfully uplifting & happy

12. Run-Beautiful song, especially guitars, with a nice assist from drums

13. All the Way-Uplifting lyrics, guitars

14. World-Great beat, good lyrics

15. True Faith- Great beat especialy drums

16. Vanishing Point- Great synth sounds, cool lyrics

Smells Like Teen Spirit-really great dance beat; I'm so glad they ditched Hannett and got Butch Vig to produce.

1. Ceremony......both a fitting end to one era and a brilliant begining for the next. Still thrills me today as it did then.

2.Regret......Tim/oldmonkey said it best, all the top NO bits in one song.

3.Everything's Gone Green.....caught my ear with the sequencers. I love the sound of Barney's vocals for the enigmatic lyrics. Part of the soundtrack on my way for my first NO gig as well.

4Age Of Consent.......another track that caught me a bit by surprise, I heard it on the radio without knowing that PC&L was about to be released and thought.....New New Order?.........YESSSSS!!!!!!

5.TemptationMy friends and I badgered the local college DJ's to play that song every day until we got our own copies.....well, the badgering didn't end at that point, truth be told.

6.Your Silent Face.......just absolutely gorgeous.

7Waiting For The Sirens' Call.........same ingredients as for Regret

8As It Is When It Was....lyrics and the melody. A nice one to reminisce to

9Perfect Kiss.....the build up to the mash up at the end.

10Hurt......for some of the same reasons as EGG

11Truth......entrancing rhythm, melodica, and lyrics.

12Lonesome Tonight..........accidentally played this b-side first before TLU............it was at least a week before I got to the a-side.

13Sunrise.........because it rocks, quite simply.

14Run...maybe not the best lyrics for me, but damn, the music is something else

16Crystal........classic set opener

17In A Lonely Place...........what a turn around from the a-side

18Love Vigilantes........interesting lyrics, and great 'techno 'n' western' music.

Hi Burt In A Lonely Place was performed at Ally Pally in 1998 as it was on the extra's on either the 3:16 Reading Festival '98/New York '81 or 5:11 Finsbury Park 5th June 2002 DVD's. It was only a 15 sec snippet but from what I saw it looked like a good performance of it.

Thanks to everyone for replying to this post as its been interesting to see what NO songs people like and dislike and why people like them and so far no one has slagged anyone's choices off!

Hi Burt In A Lonely Place was performed at Ally Pally in 1998 as it was on the extra's on either the 3:16 Reading Festival '98/New York '81 or 5:11 Finsbury Park 5th June 2002 DVD's. It was only a 15 sec snippet but from what I saw it looked like a good performance of it.

Don't sweat about it Krisna I'm no 'NO expert' either and the purpose of this thread wasn't to show who know's the most about Joy Division/New Order or who's been down with them since the Warsaw days. I too have only been into JD/NO since seeing the True Faith video in August '87 and being blown away with something that I'd never seen/heard before so let's not slag anyone off who's only just got into them. Dreams Never End just barely missed out for me. I've been giving Modvement a re-listen for the first time in a long time and have a newfound appreciation for it.

I'd recommend buying "Substance 1987" and "Technique". If you only own two New Order CD's, those are the ones, IMHO.

Shellshocker, I'm in the same boat, are you as jealous as me? I've had tickets for one concert. . .girlfriend broke up with me then took her friend; Then they tour when I'm out of the area.

I swear I will see them at least once!!!! At least if they ever decide to come backto the US to tour again.

any valid current chances. please. Hadn't realised at the time but years back there was a DJ with some rave-type Disco warehouse Deals when he'd layer a JD tune over and through some New order song. Very nice and perhaps using parts of the older recordings.

Now that you've said there are some good versions out there. got me curious. Hope too that some recordings might make it out of the Oct. (limited edition) Re Order, Digital etc. band sets.
