JD concerts

for years me and a mate have had a bit of banter on which was the best gig out of Eindhoven & Amsterdam.

Anyone got a comment on which one they prefer and why?

I wont disclose my choice just yet :)

Wow, that's a tough choice, especially since both have similar quality recordings available and were only a week apart.

I guess I'd have to go with Amsterdam, but mostly for personal reasons. I'd heard that one first so I tend to go back to it more. Also, I think Amsterdam had a superior setlist.

Both have fairly similar setlists and are each of quite good sound quality. I'd probably lean toward the Eindhoven show, personally. I think that performance of Atmosphere is the best live airing ever done by either JD or NO.

Amsterdam for me. Excellent performance, played two different sets including my fave JD songs (24 hours, Disorder and New Dawn Fades)and the quality soundboard recording make this gig the dogs baws for me.

Out of the two gigs, I prefer Eindhoven. Saying that though, neither would be in my top 5 JD gigs.

Cant argue with the monkey, Eindhoven was my choice.

I bought that picture vinyl bootleg when I was 15, £20, which was a fortune for me then.

It's shit quality, but has the debuts (or at least first live versions that we have available) of Dead Souls and Atrocity Exhibition.

I am pretty certain they did Dead Souls at the Sheffield Limit club gig just before the Roots club gig. It's a long time ago, but I remember them starting off with a new song that we didn't know. IC didn't sing for ages and there was lots of messing around with instruments dropping in and out. I don't remember Atrocity Ex.

I have a terrible live recording of Futurama - actually the sound in the venue was bloody terrible too!

I would agree that Derby was a cracker. My favourite live recording is probably Prince Of Wales conf centre. Also I really like one from 1980 where they do the 'all guitar' version of LWTUA (IC says something like 'you can tell we haven't rehearsed for a while')- I think it's either the Lyceum or one of the Moonlight clubs. I guess you'll know which, Tim.

Cool! It had probably been around for about a month before those July 79 gigs, given the date of the Central Sound demo. If only we had access to stuff like the setlists!

Amsterdam would get my vote, but my favourite live recording is probably The Factory Club July 13th 1979 (on the Heart & Soul boxset).

In fact, I was thinking the other day that they should've put either Amsterdam or the Factory Club gig as the live LP on Still instead of Birmingham (I know it was the last gig but the quality was not the best). Also I would've removed Sister Ray from the Still Studio LP and added the studio take of "Digital".

Eindhoven - mainly for the start of Dead Souls plus the fact that I 'hung out' there for a week in 85 or 86. Saw a yank band there called liveskull or Lifeskull and managed to nut the female singer by accident!

If yer deaf, yes. It sounds as good as the record then. This is possibly one of the worst bootlegs going, very poor sound. There is no decent recording of Leigh!
