Big World Cafe 1989(?)

Just dusted off an old VHS tape of NO bits and bobs, and found the performance at Brixton Academy for a short-lived programme called Big World Cafe. They played Dream Attack, Vanishing Point, Round and Round, and Run.

Were any of you sods there?.. All i remember at the time is looking at Mariella Frostrup's arse, joining in calling Barney a bald bastard wile he was waiting for the live cue trying to make him laugh, and someone right next to me with an inflatable dolphin trying to ruin a guitar solo, by thrwoing it at him.

As my VHS tape is on its last legs.. Thinking of uploading a few bits from it onto YouTube, before the tape dies, but dunno how.

Never went myself, seem to remember the NME advertising it and giving a phone number to book tickets though. It was Brixton Academy wasn't it? Good performance by the band, especially VP and Run. Didn't know they'd played Dream Attack until i stumbled on the repeat the following midweek. Shug has it on a compilation DVD somewhere and would probably send you a copy if the vid is on it's last legs.

Aye NME gave out the phone number but you could only get them through touts outisde, priced at a tenner. Hefty for a four song gig in 1989.

We did bump in to Hooky outside in the Wimpy though.

And yup, i need to raid you lot for DVD's at some point. I've just found a video of NO doing Cramp on Spanish TV ca 1982, and its excellent, even though Barney is naked apart from shorts.

That was from Studio 54 - Barcelona July 1984, awesome gig.

I can't believe I was the only one from this site there! I remember hanging around at the end to watch Eagle Eye Cherry having to re record the intro to New Order.

On my copy he is wearing Jeans and it was July 84 not 82 :D

Yes, I was there, got my tickets through the NME way.

Pity it was so short though. I do have it on DVD as well.

I was there & extremely pissed! Rob and Andy gave us 11 tickets. Got well pissed, was out all day, was stood next to Mariella Frostrup with an inflatable skeleton whilst she interviewed Julia Fordham, I stage dived off one of the camera ramps too!!! Not a mean feat as I was a lot larger back then! I have a script somewhere. You can see the guys dolphin on the original glasto cd cover!

I`ve got this on vid too,along with the snub Tv interview from the pervious week. All i remember about the Big World Cafe show is how fuckin awful the jumper was that Bernard was wearing (a white Joe Bloggs one?),and Steves yellow cycling top wasnt much better!

Also there, cold night so turned up in one of those German Army parkas expecting the cloakroom to be open - no such luck and roasted in it.

Alex, I still have your performance on video somewhere, will get it converted some time if you don't have a copy.

Got it on VHS somewhere.I remember recording Round & Round and Run from the original broadcast in Feb of that year and then recording Dream Attack when it was aired quite a few months later.Don't remember Vanishing Point getting an airing though

Nooooooooo! That jumper was top - funnily enough, I had one veery similar shortly afterwards.....

NME said tickets would be free from one or two record shops from 4 o'clock or something on a particular date.

I went to one of them at about midday and the guy said he was waiting for them to be delivered. So I just hung around - for about six hours.

Loads of people came in asking and at first the guy said he was still waiting (true) and then he started saying they had all gone (when he still hadn't had the delivery)

I got the impression he was just pissed off with it all and was going to give the whole wad of tickets to a tout (maybe for a nice little backhander)

When the courier finally arrived, me and a couple of others in the shop got a ticket each.

As for the gig, I don't remember a thing about it. I was only 17 and was so pissed when I went in I could hardly stand up. I just hung around at the back and tried to stay awake without chucking up.

Thankfully I've learnt how to drink since then.

Still can't remember a thing about most gigs though.

The jumper was terrible, thought Barney looked anorexic as well.

Other things of amusement; Singing Terrance Trent Darby songs to Eagle Eye Cherry, well pissed off with it in the end.

Edward II and the Red Hot Polkas given the Mainstage while Norder were given a small stage at the back so the audience faced uphill, WTF?

Diamanda Galas wailing to requests for Ceremony, AoC etc

I think this thread is great. I always wonder when I watch old TV stuff, such as BWC, The Tube and stuff from the Hac if the then youngsters at the front are anyone from the site. There are always a few there with Barney hair cuts.

Actually, it was at this li'l 'gig', that i first heard of the Vikings. Large group in the cue with Mancunian accents; some had maracas too, a la Bez.

Well, the Vikings are Al's creation, they weren't a group of Manc fans in 1989 like Burt is suggesting. They originated in London circa 1998?

Might be true... Whoever i met were a hardcore band of NO fans, whom I'm sure called themselves Vikings. Besides, I'd heard the term Vikings a long time before I'd discovered this site; of that I'm sure. Some of 'em were carrying maracas cos the Mondays were playing around the same time.
