Yeah the album version is a much butchered version. Was however, the first version i heard and i enjoyed it then. Never listen to it now.
12" version the best 
and the Cock Like The M1 version of course

the whole thing, not the edit they foisted on us for the Substance CD.
Did the full 12" version ever appear on Cd??? On the Substance Cd it's edited compared to the version in the Substance vinyl...
Nope, full 12" has never been on CD.
Maybe one day it'll be on disc 2 of a Low-Life remaster? Who knows....

Listen to the video version instead, up to a full 9.10 or something like that! Or Digital's version, which is also over 9 minutes long.
Yeah, the lowlife version is pretty crap, but I have to admit I love the part right at the start where the synths alternate between speakers. Wish they could have included that bit in the full version somewhere.....
I liked the "single" version, but the Low-Life version isn't exactly horrible. What I think is horrible is how John Robie butchered "Subculture"...I don't mind the general sound of it (as in the synths), but the background vocals are too annoying!

the album version of perfect kiss is butchered. you can her barney stating to say the perfect kiss is the kiss of death.
actually i still like the single version of subculture, but i know that i am in the minority here.

i cannot listen to the "Lowlife" version, i hate it
for me its the 12" version or the video edit from Retro
The album version is more like a sample taste of the song, to me. I didn't like it at first as much as I would have if it were less edited, but the album's so good (again, to me) that I think having a shorter version fits the flow (after all, song number two's probably not the right place on an album for a cinematic epic--although the full version might have gone well in "Elegia"'s place--wait, I like "Elegia").
For me, Low-Life was not a breathtaking experience. I think the edit of TPK made me go back to the Substance version and from there it grew to be one of my all time faves by NO (being of the younger generation, I've not yet had the chance to be enlightened by the 12"). Nonetheless, for the sake of fluidity and balance, the actual track duration of TPK on LowLife doesn't bother me. Perhaps it's simply the dodgy quality of the edit that gets under the skin of older fans?
It appears a majority here favour LowLife out of the studio albums, but if the TPK edit gets ridiculed so frequently, and the song itself is arguably the best composition off the album, I don't see how LowLife is considered so great. Granted, I view it as a strong album, and I adore Face Up and Sooner Than You Think, unlike some folks around here, but personally, I vouch for Brotherhood, 'flawed production' and all, over LowLife.

Absolutely hate the Low Life version. My 12" vinyl is in the loft now but I have resurrected the Retro 5 version. At least you get the 9 minutes or so.

I think for many people, the fact that they have condensed such a masterpiece at all is the problem. I'd rather it were not on the album full stop than be butchered like that. It's always tough to cut a big long song down to something radiofriendly and four minutes long, but the majesty of Perfect Kiss is that it builds and builds before the huge release at the end, and you don't get that in the edit.
Low Life itself isn't a great album, it has some great songs on it, but the production shows them in indecisive mode, something they carried over to Brotherhood as well. Listen to the live versions of the songs to get a feel for what they were capable of sounding like.

.....is obviously nowhere near as good as the 12" version,it couldn't be,it was made to be 7 minutes long.But I guess they thought it was that good,too good to be just left as a N.O. album track,fine for us devotees,that it deserved a crack at chart success,& for that reason,as a stand alone track,it works ok.Unless I'm listening to 'Low Life' tho',I don't play it.....ahem:\ohwell:

I realized that ages ago when I first got the original 12". Thing is, being a dub mix, that section has slightly different levels and effects to how it sounds on that original 12".

The 12" mix is a stunning piece of work.
From the intro latin percussion which then goes into the funk bass bits and then builds into the chorus synth hook before Barney's vocals come in....mmmm sublime!
The lyrical ambiguity is great too:

The images and ambiguities pile upon each other lyrically but the two big highs for me are the mid section when the savage bass synth sequence cuts in and totally mashes the other layers. It sounds awesome, like a total freak-out but it's brilliantly controlled.
After that orgasm, it cools down a bit with the slightly naff cowbells and the sampled frogs (kissing a frog so he turns into a prince etc) and that leads into the real business as Hooky gives it loads, going down through the key as Gillian stabs out the string chords riff.
Just when you think it'll fade - and it does on the Singles version - it picks up even harder. Pure wickedness and arguably one of the finest versions they've ever committed recorded.
Unfortunately the The Perfect Kiss (12") link has expired.
I presume that everybody who wanted it, got it by now. I won't replace it anymore, sorry.

I guess its a personal thing really as well, history relived, "you had to be there" kinda thing, cos the Substance version is virtually identical... only 48 secs difference. hmm wonder why the 8.50 wasn't on Substance or Retro or itunes (with the artwork)? if it did appear there I would buy it - hopefully along with all the other long lost 12" versions

i couldnt see it then nor now,for me its overendulgent,over thetop,overproduced and the fact that its never been re-released in its entirity tends to sugest that someone somewhere thinks only diehard fans would be interested,and theyd be right.
For me it doesnt even sit well on low life either,its almost like a duran duran track just leering out of what is a great album.

These were just some of the lyrics Bernard used in the early days. The very first rendition, at the Royal Festival Hall, it was all about a cock that looked like the M1!!! The version you are referring to was Leicester Palais, the second time they played it.

i had low-life before substance and thought it was awesome, but it pales in comparison to the 12" (not the substance edit)
the live version from the recent low-life podcast IS awesome though
