do you think there would have been a new order without Ian?

Just watching the mtv dvd and a thought came. Barney Hookey and Steve were in a band looking for a singer and Ian was in another band. What if he'd never joined?

would they have gone with another singer or would one of them taken up the vocal chores?

I know this is mere speculation, still it could have happened that Ian never joined Joy Division.

Myself I think that perhaps Barney could have taken over vocals much earlier. This is not meant to take away from the brilliance of Joy Division. Just a thought.

Steve joined them once Ian was on board, he was their 3rd/4th drummer. He supposedly only joined because there was already a Macclesfield lad (Ian) in the band, according to legend/myth/wind-up talk.

If Ian hadn't joined Bernard and Hooky, then anything could have happened. Chances are though that they wouldn't have broken through in the way they did. Who is right, who can tell, and who gives a damn right now?

Hooky might of become the bassist in Def Leppard. As for Bernard,they might have let him join Duran Duran.

thanks tim for putting me right on the history of the succession of steves. i should have remembered that. still hookey barney and a drummer looking for a singer, we can speculate can't we.

What the heck is the original poster talking about about? Sure, there's always the possibility, you know, "What if such and such didn't join?", but I find it hard to think that there would have been a "New Order" without Ian's death. (RIP Ian Curtis, by the way)

i think my question is rooted far more in reality than say a possible third J.D. album. there was a very real chance that ian may not have hooked up with the band.

I reckon they would have just got another singer - none of them wanted to sing until it was forced on them.

Who knows if they'd have had the same success, but then they were bloody determined which counts for a lot.

But there would have been no-one to go up to Tony Wilson and call him a cunt for not putting them on his show. With no Ian led JD/Warsaw, then Wilson might not have even started Factory!

I agree with Ness Order´s comments about their determination, they are highly talented musicians who wanted to succeed. I like the Phoenix rising from the ashes story, that such a tragedy sprouted a great musical career, but it is still puzzling putting ian out of the equation. Barney in Duran Duran? Hmmm...

Taking the original question totally literally.....there's never been a New Order with Ian, so the answer would have to be yes!
