for those not following the progression of the film outside this site, it might interest you to know that the actors playing JD are performing the songs live. I had a hard time accepting this at first, but its been confirmed. It will be interesting to see how they handle this in post production, with Barney, Hooky, and Steve on record as saying they "want to see what Anton has done" before agreeing to do any type of score.

Sound like there's a chance of them not doing the score of the movie if they don't like the result. Is that it?
The actors have recorded their own versions of the songs and when they film the gig scenes they play live over the top of their own covers.
They can play really well, but hey fuck up all the time. Just like the real thing.

Having not read Touching From A Distance, i don't know how heavily they're gonna be featured in Control

But not bad. That guy playing Steve needs a little more chin/angular face, imho. Never mind that Pearson dude.. so doesn't look like decent Bernard fake - I prefer Simm, not gonna lie. The acting could still blow us away, never know.
As far as what the tales are from a few extras (and one or two who actually are JD fans and met or saw the band a few times in the early days) the general impression is it looks great on set. Apparently Riley's doing a lovely job.

I'd rather see someone compile and release 120 minutes of never before seen JD footage (like that early indie flick they were in that is impossible to find...)

Samantha Morton must be a real fan, otherwise I seriously don't see what she's doing in this movie...
Nice coup from the production company to have an oscar nominee on board though.
But I would have loved to see a little more known actors around, though it could distract from the story. Let's wait and see, it's Anton Corjbin's debut, so nobody knows what to expect.

Just got back from Nottingham on my 2nd day on the set of control as an extra. It was amazing. The waiting around is a killer. I must have been on set a total of 25 minutes and waited in the pub garden about 10 hours. And it was ALL worth it. Today they filmed the infamous *beep* moment' (which I always thought came in the form of a letter to Wilson, but here, was spoken to him). My first shoot of the day was rather boring, with Wilson just sitting at a table, quite interesting, but only ‘cause I learned that film beer is fake and tastes like fairy liquid, I was happy just to be in THAT scene. Any scene in a film this important to us JD fans would have done…But my god the best yet to come. JOY DIVISION PLAYING 'DIGITAL'...all live and it sounded just like them, Sam Riley, I haven’t seen him act yet, but my god he's got Ian’s stage presence. The others look just as they should, bar Steven Morris(but he’s got a chin that’s hard to find in the average man),even hooky had his back to the audience! Riley has got the dancing; the facial expressions and the voice just right, even the subtle differences, like how Ian's voice becomes more nasal and robotic live. They did the full song while we, the extras pogoed till someone fainted from heat exhaustion (hot was not the word to describe that small room we were in). Sam Riley was shaking before he had to perform but Anton Corbijn calmed him down (and spoke to me afterwards, he told me "move to the right as you are blocking my shot"..an insightful man indeed). And I can see why. No one else could have done what I saw him do, not without looking like Mr Bean on an epileptic fit. He blows Sean Harris (24hrpp) out of the water (Harris' dead fly dance looks more like a Morris dance in comparison to this lad), he was, intense with a capital INTENSE.
Tonight I witnessed Joy Division live, 26 years after the death of Ian Curtis, and for all of us that knew the significance of that scene (which as far as I’m aware were three of us…most of the extras I spoke to hadn’t even heard of Joy Division), the spectacle that lay before us was awesome to behold.

I don't mind the actors playing the music.. it's a movie afterall.. the actors are acting out their roles.. and from the sounds of it in the imdb.com forum, it sounds like they are sounding good as well.. I might be naive about all this, but I also doubt Anton Corbijn would have a crappy sounding JD in his movie anyway.. I like it because it tends to lend more creedence to the role vs. just looking the part. Also, it's not like JD's music is all that hard to play.. not knocking the music.. just stating what I think is the truth. The lead singer/actor is a real singer too.
I'd still like to hear/see the real JD/NO's music in the score though.

Bah, a cartoon would absolutely rock! Even with bad MIDI, I mean... capes! Who wouldn't go to see a movie about cartoonish Joy Division with capes and superbandpowers? It'd be a cooler, thumping male Josie and the Pussycats. Only with a rockin' modified Traveller lurking in the background as their getaway vehicle.

She was in U2's Electrical Storm video which was directed by Corbijn so I guess that's one of the reasons for her involvement.

They are far,far too good looking going off the pictures! The guy playing Hooky is straight from 'The O.C' or something! I know Corbijn goes for aesthetically pleasing & enigmatic but......Only going off the publicity shots mind....tho that shot of Sam Riley as Ian outside the phone-box is def striking 
Nah, in fairness the pretty boy playing Hooky DOES look the part when he's got the beard he's grown for the part. I was on set as an extra a few weeks back (and will be again next week) and - even if the film turns out to be shit) - the aesthetics (and the sounds) can barely be faulted. Those press shots aren't reaaly fair: you need to see them all in their (absolutely spot-on) costumes. The lad playing Gretton looks the part as well, though the Tony Wilson is too tall!

is this due for independent release at small sea side pictures and the likes of the Lowry, coz no way Joe Public will go see this?

I was going to change it to "I licked Naomi Watts' Minge". But it's not true. Unfortunately.
Looking at the pics, apart from 'Ian' they do look a bit too boy band-ish. Impressive if they can pull off the performing bit though.
