What is everyones first memory of New Order

Buying the Ceremony 7in single.

hearing BLT in Club Atlantis many years ago.

they also had a pretty good new order mega-mix in Club A too.

hearing Thieves Like Us on local college radio in 1984.

went out and bought the 12", then the rest of their small catalog in the next few weeks, then a few months later the record store owner explained to me that they were once Joy Division, when I wondered if there were any lps before Movement....

Technically, it's watcing the True Faith video on MTV circa 1986. My first memory where I knew it was NO is in the car with my buddy, hearing Blue Monday on the radio (Toronto radio station!) on the way to the bars.

Reading an interview with GGilbert in Smash Hits in 1982 - probably not long after the release of Temptation, but I hadn't heard any of their stuff then. Thats when I realised that I new a Joy Division song (LWTUA of course) & I was on the look out for any of their tracks from then on. They didn't get played on any radio stations I got to listen to (& as a 13-14 year old at the time I wasn't going to any clubs where they could be heard - they used to call them 'discos' in those days :D ) so it was 1983 & the release of BM before I finally heard a proper NO track - on BBC mw the chart show on a Tuesday at lunchtime I think. At that stage I already knew the names of various songs (Temptation & EGG & Procession anyway) from the Indie Charts published in Smash Hits, but that was all:(

First bad memory: seeing/hearing True Faith for the first time in my life (first time I was aware of the band as well and that was in 1987), thinking 'this is rubbish'

First good memory (I guess): crying with joy to Ruined in a day but I think it was earlier actually when I decided I'm gonna love this band forever :shy:

NME saying that Joy Division had changed their name following the death of Ian Curtis.

I was at my mates house years ago and this guy from school turned up. We all knew this lad as a bit of a headcase and we were all very wary of him. We were all a bit stoned and the radio was on but we weren't really listening to it. One by one we all stopped talking and started paying attention to the song that was being played. It was Atmosphere.

At the end of the song we all looked at one another and, as stoned teenagers do, discussed the song in awed tones. I'd never heard it before, which seems incredible now, but a couple of the lads knew of it and they were talking about Joy Division and Ian Curtis and so on. Then we noticed that the headcase from school was quietly crying.

The whole thing rattled me a bit and I avoided Joy Division and New Order for a few years. I felt intimidated by the intensity of it all.

Getting the Shellshock 7" when I was 7 years old and preferring the Thieves Like Us Instrumental Edit.

Someone at college used to be mad on JD and I'd never heard of them before he started scrawling their name on the blackboard.Used to wear the obligatory trenchcoat too. First memory of New Order was hearing them for the first time on the John Peel show,who was playing tracks of their new album MOVEMENT.Played about 4 songs of it. As you would when you're young,you tape a lot of stuff off radio,I wasn't mad on it,but I liked anything electronic at the time.Absolutely love Movement now,production's great.

Hearing BM at a youthclub disco and thinking it was Hazel Dean. I asked the DJ eventually and he said "that's Blue monday by a band called new order, I only play it cos it drives the lights mad". I spent WEEKS looking for it before I asked and was handed the odd floppy disc thing I had been flicking past all those weeks.

Probably seeing Substance in WH Smiths or Woolworths and thinking how cool and different the sleeve was... Then heard True Faith and was sold...

I think it was hearing Confusion as the theme for the Rockline program presented by Bernard Lenoir in Les Enfants Du Rock on French tele in the 80's. I didn't know the title, only that it was a New Order track, so I bought all their 12' :p

Hearing Ceremony in a park in Manchester in the Summer of '81,just remember the soaring bassline.The end of the 1st version still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.Also remember,when actually found it who it was,that 'they're that band that used to be someone else but their singer killed himself'..said at the time.It was a big deal in Manchester at the time,it had a 'buzz'.But I let them come & go,& got into Ratio 1st...& then Blue Monday came along........

I don´t remember exactly, but maybe can be when i was 6 or 7 and in the radio listened Run!

most likely it was shellshock, when my friends and i used to listen to the pretty in pink soundtrack (crack for girls at that time). my first real memory of NO was when this group of girls did a dance routine to BM at our middle school talent show around 1986-1987. i thought i had reached nirvana...although i have since changed my mind. it wasn't until true faith that i discovered the real beauty of new order.

I had gotten into Joy Division by some indie kid friends and was looking up info on them one day while bored and somewhere in the info it said that after Ian Curtis died the other members became New Order, the band that did "Blue Monday."

I thought, "Blue Monday? The song Orgy covered several years ago?" I remembered liking that song when I was in 7th Grade, so I thought I'd give the original a listen to see what it was like. Turned out it was amazing, better than the cover, and I couldn't stop listening!

It was in the late 80's, early 90's...I was between the ages of 8 and 12...I remember hearing "True Faith"( is that what it is called, I can hear the song...) I didn't know the name of the band until the mid-90's. I didn't know about Joy Division until mid-'02. I always thought New Order had unique music. Hearing the transformation from Joy Division to New Order, you know, not totally losing the jd sound, but turning into this brilliant sound...

I bought CLOSER in 1981 after reading a review of it that made it sound like it was right up my alley. It was, in a way, but after maybe 10 listens, I found that I COULDN"T listen to it anymore...and I never went back to it. I cant explain that.

didnt see any press about Curtis' death or New Order forming...

cut to late 1983 and I'm in a record store in downtown WashDC lookin thru 12" bins to see whats new and came across the origianl 12" import of Blue Monday...I was very intrigued by the cover, and the guy working at the store recommended it...I bought it, and the rest is predictable...I havent let NO out of my sight since. I still have that original copy, but it's not in too good a shape,,,,

Cut to 2004. Watching an awesome video featuring Elegia and thinking "New Order ? Heard that name before". Then I went to a local disc seller and I remember being disappointed by BLT and TPK, thinking "what are these cheapy-gay rythms ?".

2006, buying Substance and thinking "I was a real dumbass two years ago".

I'm quite a newcomer in NO's fanbase...

I bought my big sister Erin the tape of "Substance" in 1987 as a christmas present. She eventually lost the tape (it ended up in the library of our dad's DJ company-I still have it somewhere)Erin warped another copy, ran over yet ANOTHER with her car!! I got Substance the 2cd for sis about 2 years ago at Xmas and told Erin if she ever killed it, it was up to her to get a new one!

I was into other stuff at the time. Def Leppard, Tesla, old Metallica. REM, U2 etc. I got into New Order when I worked at a record store 4 years ago. I had burned out of Grad School and was getting over six months of deep depression. The new music kids listened to just sucked. So I re-bought Def Leppard & dug up my Niravna I had not heard in years.

So Long day I learn of Joy Divison and their link to New Order. JD was dark and unique. As I was accepting I was queer-it was a comfort. New Order jhelped bring back happy memeories of my childhood that I had buried for a long time.

MTV in March or April of 1994 when I was 13; Frente! had a little hit with "Bizarre Love Triangle" and Kennedy the VJ said something about Frente! making a good living doing New Order songs -- and then a few weeks later they did a "Guide to Alternative Music" countdown in which they played the NO "BLT" video and I realized what this song was. (I learned about a bunch of other groups and people with that countdown; I'd never heard "Enjoy the Silence" or "Just Like Heaven," for example.)

I guess I had no idea at the time that British musicians made dance music and found that really mysterious. (Again, I was 13. And I liked Aerosmith.) And the "BLT" video was also mysterious with all that stuff flying everywhere and the "I don't believe in reincarnation" tidbit.

Anyway, I was one of the kids from what was probably the Frente! wave of new New Order fans.

Music truly is universal! N.O. fans liking Def Leppard & Aerosmith! I bow down to your musical open-mindedness! (Mind you,I like The Carpenters....)

I was a little over 12 years old at the time. Top of the Pops was on telly, not really paying attention until the presenter announced a debut live performance (very rare on TOTP back then) by a band called New Order playing Blue Monday. I took notice because it was live. I took even more notice because of the awful flatness of Barney's singing, their apparent discomfort/awkwardness on stage and of course THAT intro.

I was hooked!

When i first listened to my brother's Republic about four years ago. I heard Regret and instantly remembered about the TOTP vid with the Hoff.

And that was the beginning of my love of NO...

My first memory of NO is when i heard there first single ,i was a fan of Joy Division and when Ian died i heard they were carriyng on as NO they were great memories back in the eraly eighties and have been hooked on them.

oh...but then again, I WAS and REMAIN the quintessential ThreeDogNight fan since 1969. In the mid eighties they reformed for two minutes and put out an EP called 'It's a Jungle' which I bought on the very same day that I found the Black Cover original Confusion 12". The sales clerk looked at the three dog night 12" and then at the New ORder 12" and said to me.."are you sure you know what this is?" That, of course, further embarassed me (3DN was shunned by 99% of the world from 74 onward)..but I chinned up and said I knew exactly what that is.

the 3DN ep sucked, of course. But the Confusion 12" was wonderful...but you all know that.

Rollerskating to "True Faith." Or more than likely, hiding in a dark corner at the rink, listening to it and thinking, "I hate everyone." *smirk*

I didn't really take much notice of NO until Substance 1987. My brother taped it for me and I thought it was the most briliant thing I'd ever heard. I played it over and over until the tape broke.

Actually...........most of my first memories of NO are of tapes made for me for when i was really young, and yeah, they did wear out and break!

Funny you should say that Bonz, cos all my BEST memories of No revolve around dodgy as fuck tapes bought from dodgy as fuck live tape geezers at record fairs. I would traipse half way accross NI with only enough money for the train, the entrance fee and one tape, then RUSH home to hear it.....hearing it usually meant listening to the intros and outros to hear if barney said owt stupid and to generally guage he mightiness of the performance.

Saw 24 Hour Party People in 2002. Was transfixed by the whole JD story, and got UP and Closer. Only listened to them three times.

2004: Saw True Faith on MTV2 as part of their 50 most influential bands or something (NO were 40 something) Loved the song, and remembered them being mentioned in 24HPP.

Like several others, I was sitting having my tea one Thursday evening in 1983 when New Order came on TOTP, did Blue Monday and blew my adolescent mind. They performed it live and instead of bouncing about like fools, they took the, at the time, revolutionary step of looking cool, as if they couldn't care less about being there. Of course, the fact that they insisted on doing it live would suggest that they were very bothered. I instantly knew that this band were the fucking future so rushed into John Menzies and bought PCL the next lunchtime; imagine my horror when I got home and realised Blue Monday wasn't even on it! Peter Saville designs were beyond my understanding at the age of 12 and I'd only known it was NO thanks to a handy sticker. Having just spunked my savings on the album, I had to suffer the agonising wait of saving up enough to buy the 12". Shit, I'm going on a bit here...............

Listening to Blue Monday on the radio in the mid 80's

Probably heard Blue Monday first but wasn´t hooked there. Then hearing The Kiss of Death (Perfect Kiss) in a local Freestyle Dance contest and the winnig team of 4 girls was using that song. The song accompanied the girls very well. Bit weird, but Perfect Kiss, Kiss of Death was just the coolest song ever, with the extended metal guitar (synth riff) at the end and the frog chorus. Not to mention the almost orgasm female vocals at the end.

A family friend bringing Substance on tape over before I started high school in 1987 and talking about this band that doesn't appear on the cover of their albums(maybe he wasn't aware of Low-Life). His stories about the band were golden, I was sold on New Order even before listening to them. After listening I was a memeber for life!!

Remember seeing the video clip for Bizzare Love Triangle on tv when it was in the charts and amazed not only by the song but also all those people falling from the sky ... and the way it stopped halfway through for the asian girl scene and the 'your a really up person' bit .... Was only a 9 year old but saved up all my money each week to buy the back catalogue ....

Well, I'm only 25, but my older cousin used to come over all the time and we'd listen to the radio, watch MTV (as she had a big crush on the Duran Duran guys, it seemed most of the time she would just wait for something from them. Torturing me in the process of endless rants of how she wanted to be Mrs. Simon LeBon and other sick fantasies I didn't wanna hear.. ). Anyways, this must have been around the time "Bizarre Love Triangle" had just come out, and we were waiting for a stupid Duran Duran request she made over the radio, and I remember hearing "BLT" and being totally blown away by it. I'd heard it before, but this was the first time I really had listened to it.. and it had a big impact on my little ears. I asked my cousin who they were and she said "Oh that's that weird band New Order. They're no Duran, though". or some shit like that. She still argues with me that Duran Duran is better than NO. (ahh she can go to hell, lol)

I'd heard their stuff before, but didn't know who it was. So, that was my first 'real', official New Order memory, and where I actually knew who they were.

as all my mates were doing the football and drug thing in 1990 i swapped a wrap of speed for a singles compilation video and was amazed at Hooky's bass playing on Perfect Kiss. Then tracked down Technique and have never stopped playing it. Best album i have ever heard at 4 in the morning (or ever!).

Was sitting in the 6th form common room in autumn 1987 when a really catchy, near perfect tune came on the jukebox.

A girl in my form was big fan and banged a few tracks on a tape and I was off down to Play Inn in Eccles to get the cassette of Substance for the car stereo.

Sped through NO catalogue and then back through JD too.

I can still remember hearing Transmission, Sunrise, TPK, Subculture etc for the 1st time. Special thanks to Mr Pettibone for the TF remix 12" too.

I think it was either True Faith or Blue Monday on the radio although that SUNKIST commercial might have come first and did a subliminal job on my head. (I drink it to this day).

Walked past my sisters room and I heard the "frog chorus" on Substance...was intrigued and listen for alittle longer. When my sister went out that evening, I swiped the tape and listened to it on my little boombox. Stayed there for quite sometime.....it was 6 years later I returned the tape to my sister, as I felt bad and bought one for myself.
