Which side-project tracks would have been great New Order songs? — Forum Archive

It's already been done, but let's see.

Yesterday I was checking out all my side-project stuff, and it gave me the urge to do a NOOL Radio show on them.

Then I started to think to myself.. that would have been a great New Order song and that it probably never got the success it should have had, at least out of England, because it wasn't New Order.

First one ringing in my head is Monaco's Music For Pleasure, but I could probably add Electronic's Forbidden City and Vivid.

The more complex one is the Other Two songs because you can't picture Bernard singing them most of the time. But there are 2-3 songs there worthy of New Order according to me.

So, what's your take? and would you love some of these to enter the setlist someday just like Jon Bon Jovi did with his solo material such as Blaze of Glory?

I know it would be difficult and people would love to hear New Order classics before, but would you actually mind? Some Electronic songs would be wonderful with Hooky's input in there.

Music for pleasure,absolutely.Shine.Junk,Sedona & Happy Jack are for all intents & purposes,N.O. tunes.IMO,Sedona is the best instrumental N.O.never wrote,& I mean that with no disdain for the N.O. instrumentals as Don't Do It is a top 20 favourite of mine.I def agree with Spotnick on the point that some Electronic tunes would definately benefit from some Hooky bass,but,for me,the bass is the one integral part above all else that does it for me with N.O. so I'm biased on that.A Life Apart,Kashmere & Black Rain also work for me too on that score,which is why I only focus on Monacos' stuff as it has Hooky on it! :bow:

I wuz gonna say anything, but actually they all seem okay on their own - It's hard now to imagine them as part of NO song. Still, I honestly lament all those hooky riffs that went to Revenge and Monaco. As much as I love those albums, I can only image what NO would done with them.

What do you want from me would be so cool live. That would be my first choise.

Happy Jack would be something I think Barney could handle.

Selfish would be a nice suprise, but I think Barney would be able to belt out Innocence much better.

Twisted Tenderness would be great to add some hooky to it. (Oh wait they did, its called WFTSC) -Hey Jack ask your Dad to do some bass for Twisted Tenderness, and we will add it ourselfs.

Vivid or Like no other could be great Hooky songs or really anything from the TT cd.

And Forbidden City & For you could work as well.

So my 3 choices are

Twisted Tenderness
Innocence

Forbidden City, anything off the first Electronic album, and I've always thought in some strange way that Barney could pull off a fair few tracks off The Other Two And You...

Wasn't the first Electronic album pretty much written by Barney as a New Order album anyway, with most of the tunes in place by the end of 89? Seem to recall some of them were on that Mac, weren't they?

I think half the tracks on that would've made excellent New Order songs. Actually, no, the entire album would've pissed on Republic. There was obviously your non-standard numbers like Idiot Country and Feel Every Beat, cos Barney was rapping on them, but then he rapped again years later on Times Change, so looking back even these sound Neworderish.

Beyond that, from the other side projects, I can only think of Tasty Fish and WDYWFM as making decent New Order choons.

EDIT: oh, and perhaps State of Shock and Big Bang from those Revenge lads.

Was just gonna add that some of the Revenge stuff too,but El Jarvo beat me to it! Think 7 Reasons & Bleachboy too.Agree with Old Monkey on the fact that pretty much all of the 1st Electronic album could work as N.O. too,& I think I've read somewhere about Barney writing it as a N.O. album,& would def piss all over much of Republic(ie. Stephen Hague not trying to turn it into a souped up PSB LP) :nod:

I think that What Do You Want From me is more Pottsy baby than Hooky´s and in fact maybe most of their back catalogue so realisticly none of them would have made it as a NO song. I believe Barney had already some tunes in his head before starting work with Marr. So maybe Getting away with it and Get the message would have been great New Order tracks. Also Vivid and Twisted Tenderness.

Tasty Fish would probably have surfaced as a NO song but in drastically other form, as Hookey and Barney would have put their signature on and Barney would have dictated the vocal line and melody. Other TO2 tracks aren´t really that good actually. :)

You are joking, right? That bassline is pure Hooky, straight out of that magic bag he keeps all the gems in, like Let's Go and Broken Promise. Only Hooky can write bass melody like that.

Musically,but without the vocals the first Other Two album had some New Order moments. As did One True Passion. As for Electronic,Out Of My League.

Old Monkey's spot on,def a 'magic bag'of basslines! I mean,it almost kills me that Shine & Happy Jack aren't N.O.tunes.I know this might be obvious to say,but just think of how many corkers the Viking Bass God has come up with! Has anyone else been that prolific at coming up with so many gems.For me,no-one :hooky: :bow:

Well.. let's see.

Electronic - Electronic

Plenty of songs, but if I had to pick one, it would probably be Get The Message.. can't pick just one.. Tighten Up and Some Distant Memory.

Electronic - Raise The Pressure

Forbidden City and Freefall (which is pretty similar to Special I think)

Electronic - Twisted Tenderness

Since it's almost Get Ready, I guess many could fit.. imagine Vivid with bass and melodica :evil4: Twisted Tenderness with bass would be a killer..

Monaco - Music for pleasure

Obvious is What Do You Want From Me.. I'm not sure Shine would be New Order material since mellow songs never seem to appeal to the usual New Order fan like they do to me (ex: Turn My Way)... Sweet Lips has Jetstream written all over it. Happy Jack maybe.

Monaco - Monaco

Well, Kashmere is the obvious one to me... this would have been a super New Order song. I've Got A Feeling is probably the blue print to Krafty... there are other tracks that are good on this album, but wouldn't fit with New Order, like It's a Boy (Hello Jack! :lol: )

The Other Two & You and Superhighways

To be honest, I only remember 2 tracks from the first album... Selfish and Tasty Fish... I can't see NO with Tasty Fish... but maybe Selfish. Out of Super Highways, maybe the title song, but again.. would take work with male vocals? can't say.. I love Weird Woman, but I can't say if it would work.

Most recently - True to Form by Hybrid w/ Peter Hook. This song with Sumner singing would be deadly.

Interesting call. Hooky's bass is quite evident but only in spurts. Would need to be fleshed out a bit yet probably shortened as well.

Electronic and Monaco have a lot of tracks that would sound great with New Order. About the other 2 songs, I think a few could fit great, but only with Gillian on vocals (I know it happened once or twice in a lifetime, but we are speculating anyway).
