From what I hear, most "music" pages for MySpace are usually fansites, not by the actual artists.

You hear shite, like you usually write. Most "music" pages for MySpace are by the artists themselves, though I doubt that the bigger names are using it as a way to get known. The likes of Arctic Monkeys made their name through their MySpace site. It's a great way for up and coming bands to get known and gather some interest.

I'm sure some of them are the actual bands but there are several no's and jd's on there, and also the individuals them selves, we can deffo count out ian curtis and i'm sure the rest of the lads aint got the time to bother.
it is a great place though for young (or not so in my case) up and comming bands.
I actualy had JJ burnel request to be my friend, I accepted just in case it was him!
A lot of bands myspaces are set up by fans, but then the record label sometimes then recruits them to do promo for them, instead of having to set up an official myspace and attract the 1000's of fans from the other myspace to listen.
Pretty sure the Bloc Party myspace started out being ran by fans, but now the fans work for the band/record label.

From meeting them, it was clear they don't bother with the internet... and that outside of New Order, they try to do something else.. hence why they don't visit fan sites.
Though we have Hooky's children Heather and Jack on this website, and Hooky replied once to NOBabe under Jack's identity, I think this is the best you'll get ;)
They enjoy what we do though...!

It's such a load of overhyped shite is MySpace, almost disappointed New Order have finally conformed (either officially or unofficially) but it's probably a safe bet none of the band had anything to do with this.
It's a haven for mostly unremarkable people to start up their own pages, pollute it with their shite musical tastes and then marvel at the amount of other unremarkable people replying with "DANKS 4 DA ADD, YOU ROK!!! LOLZER KEEP ON ROKIN!". Just the type of muppets that shouldn't be left alone with sharp objects in the nearby vicinity. No offence to any normal NOOLers on MySpace but surely you can see where I'm coming from?
I knew there was a reason I avoided it like the fcuking plague and will continue to do so. For every half decent band that comes out of MySpace there's a horde of offensively bad ones.
Surely the "fad" has passed now?
But you could always try a search for 'Shrag' who are delightful. Or 'Comet Gain' or 'The Heartwear Process' - those are bands that really deserve more exposure.
If they're using what is available to do so, then why not? It's the electronic version of the 'Indie' label. Good luck to them, I say.

Yeah but indie was responsible for its fair share of utter utter shite as well. MySpace has taken that to the next level and added an extra utter in there for 75% of their membership.
I much prefer the pre-Internet days where bands had to prove themselves before they got their recognition or a record deal. Now any old tosser with a guitar can release a half-baked idea and it achieves a top ten position through hype (not genuine talent) alone.
It's not necessarily a good thing MySpace can help anyone can release a hit single these days, just look at the charts

Amen, brother. I play bands I discover on Myspace on Everything's Gone Grey, so if they're any good, why not recognize the talent instead of dismissing them because of the site they choose to display it on?

This is a common misconception of MySpace. I can tell you without a doubt that their are a ton of great bands on MySpace (real bands, not fan run pages).

I will agree that the social aspect of MySpace with personal pages and stuff is really ridiculous. But as far as using MySpace to host music. It's perfect. I even took mine a step further and added a full mp3 player that I keep updated with all of my newest songs.
I also keep a policy that I don't send every random person annoying messages, and advertisements. I also never use a bot to add a bajillion random people, or spam people's comments with crap like "Thanks for your support".
But with all that said. I have made many great networking connections through myspace. And I heartily support it as a means to create an interest in one's projects on an international level.

That isn't particulary a bad thing.
I mean yes any old joe can put a song up. But that doesn't mean it's good music. Bands still have to work to get people to listen. And as far as the pre-internet days are concerned, I prefer the here and now. Ten years ago I wouldn't have been able to afford anything to make music. But now I can use my laptop and emulate any instrument on earth (and even make up my own). The sound quality is so realistic too that most people can't even tell it's synthetic.

That site is a fan-based site. But don't diss myspace completely. You can download songs as long as the "Download" link is indicated in black underneath the song title. MySpace Music is now my download heaven. After all, it is legal.
Should hope it ain't official with a dodgy typeface like that!
Shouldn't be cruel though - the more NO interest the better.
mice space is a great concept, free music hosting can only be a good thing.
these days when if you don't bring massive hits with every release you get dropped it's a necessary service for up and coming bands.

Well it is legal because MySpace music has a contract every band has to agree to.
Also bands don't upload other people's music on their profiles. Just theirs. So yes it is 100% legal.
I have various bands free to listen to on my post-punk.com player. But you can't d-load any of the songs.

I realize that. I understand your point, and I agree to a degree.
The only thing I didn't agree with was your overall disdain for MySpace in general. I was simply pointing out a few of the incredibly positive aspects of their site.
The being wealthy to make art thing was more of a side thought, that I kind of rambled on about.

Oh well generally people that make fan sites for bands don't allow the songs to be d-loaded (unless they are incredibly stupid and want to get sued).
The MySpace player has various options such as disabling downloads. Thereby making the site totally legal.

It's a good place to find out what a lot of bands are doing nowadays in one place - gigs, releases, and previewing new songs before they come out...
Just about every band I follow (and the vast majority of it isn't indie) has a myspace page up there, with constant gig listings (often a lot sooner than any official site tends to put info up, which is usually up to a web designer to find the time to update the official site!), and preview tracks from albums yet to be released/demos/live stuff/etc.
Sure, the New Order/Joy Division/Monaco/Revenge/Other Two/Electronic/Bernard Sumner/Peter Hook/Stephen Morris/Gillian Gilbert Myspace sites have nothing to do with them, but a lot of other bands' sites are actually run by members of the band who tend to post a lot of info on there.
Also, Myspace tends to be a useful communication space for artists/bands - i.e. gigs/etc tend to be organised through Myspace that otherwise wouldn't have taken place.
Just my tuppence... 
A Certain Ratio has a myspace page that's run by two of the band members, pretty cool actually. Most seem to be fan sites though.
