Was New Order ever asked to play Live Aid '85? — Forum Archive

I had heard that Bob Geldof never invited them. Is that true? Hell, they were one of the biggest bands of that time.

I don't actually know if they were or weren't asked in '85 but I think in 2005 Hooky commented on the reason they never did Live 8 was because they simply weren't asked. I personally wish he'd said "Of course we wouldn't have anything to do with that pretentious load of shite" but :shrug:

By not participating in either of Geldof's egotistical debacles their credibility remained intact. Can you imagine if they'd decided to appear in some cheesy promo video with Barney and Hooky clutching headphones singing along to "Feed The World"? I doubt they'd have the same untouchable "Factory" reputation they have today. Bob Geldof and Bono should fuck off, have a bath, haircut and a shave really; nobody cares. Oh yeah, everyone wore those white wristbands a year or two ago but how many do you see now? None precisely because the public were and always will be immensely trend-loving and fickle.

Basically, thank fuck New Order never had anything to do with Live Aid or Live 8 :nod: I love them all the more for it!

No, I really couldn't see them agreeing to play either Live Aid's anyway if they were asked to, but was just curious as to if Bob even acknowledged them.

What are the band's views on the Live Aid stuff and Geldof, etc.? I have always wondered.

New Order was a "faceless" leftfield indie band... and the whole point of collecting celebrities for this shallow facade of a benefit was to collect recognizable celebrities! New Order would have been a very odd choice...

I dunno. I thought they were more popular. Seemed Bob was trying to get everyone he could that was in the top charts at the time. And yeah, they had some more less in the spotlight bands there too.

Its not that I am saying NO should have done it. (I'm glad they didn't.) I just remember hearing Bob had some sort of an issue with them and didn't invite them. Seemed to be a lot of cases like that, from what I had heard.

Live 8 was a plain old joke, if you ask me.

Totally agree with Ally. If Hooky had played on Feed the World it would have ruined him forever. The sound of his bass would forever be associated with back-slapping sleb love-in.

Live Aid may have boosted the careers of several bands, but it would have done for New Order.

I can assure you that NO were never asked.Sir Bob only asked bands that were hugely popular and would therefore draw the biggest TV audience.This did not include NO.

Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder both refused to play.Bob Dylan was reluctant to play,and once on stage famously asked for some of the money to be divertsd to U.S farm aid.

i had a dream once where they (ie Barney) did live aid and he just sat on a stool and did an acoustic version of LWTUA. It was shit. Even weirder, paul mcartney came on and they did some beatles stuff together.

Maybe its a premonition??????

I went to the "free" nelson mandela concert at wembley (in 88 i think!) and seem to remember in the programme (very un new order!) there was a list of bands that had been approached to play, one of whom was new order. I could be wrong on this but it does stick in my mind (unlike the bands that did play! I guess they turned this down (or were recording Technique?

Tears for Fears turned down Live Aid.

And NO were never asked because they weren't big enough or considered mainstream enough (they probably didn't even enter Bob Geldof's head when he was making the list).

Similarly there was no Cure or Smiths.

They weren't asked. They were still something of a cult understanding at the time, although Blue Monday had been a massive hit.

It should be remembered that the Order played a good many benefit gigs for all sorts of causes during the eighties. At the time they played it - 1987 - Glastonbury was organised by (and enefited) CND. That gig saw the live debut of True Faith. They also did gigs to support the miners during their strike (1984-5) etc. For supposedly "a bunch of fascists", they supported some left wing causes!

Didn't Tears For Fears play at the US Live Aid gig? It's interesting to note from those who did play it how many have a viable career now. For some who played then, they could hardly get arrested now (mentioning no names, Alison Moyet...Nik Kershaw...Kenny Loggins (!)....)

Nope, they didn't. They were scheduled to play, and were on the roster, but decided not to show up, last minute. They even mentioned it a few times in interviews as to why they didn't play. That'd been one funny ass sight if they did play. :lol:
