Mines gotta be Barney on the Taras vid trying to sing Temptation. It sounded like he hadnt even written the words for it yet!! Its hardly recognisable from the wonderous song it turned out into!! Have to say his singing is utterly dreadful as well! (though he does looked fucked out of his head!)
I think the most embarrasing time I saw them was when they were doing that Radio 1 Live thing in a studio on TV in 1984 with that Mike whatshisface who had that copter crash. The one where they turned up late and Barney couldn't sing for toffee and everything sounded tinny. In a Lonely Place was particularly bad when Barney was telling Steve midway through the song "Faster Steve! Faster!" and poor old Morris quickened the beat. Yeah. That was bad. Although funny with Barney ripping the foam off the mike looking like he was going to kill someone.

He hadn't. They were three months away from recording it.
There was one gig on the 84 tour, Gloucester, where Hooky made a complete horlicks of the intro to Leave Me Alone. He was playing it on the wrong string, and laughing as he was doing it. Steve was pounding away on the drums, poor Gillian didn't know whether to laugh or what to do, Barney just looked at him and started laughing - it sounded like a completely different song ! After about a minute he switched to the right string, and it started up properly. A classic live fuck-up of the best variety :)

I believe Barney was "speeding his nuts off" at the time, hence the 'faster' comments.. .

They were held up in trafic after playing in Portsmouth the previos evening. Certain equipment had been mislaid and they arrived at Radio One studio with leass than 40 minutes to spare. But who gave a hoot? cos this is what Rock'n Roll should all be about.

This is probably not NO's worst or most embarrassing moment but is memorable ... I remember a part of the book 'From New Order to Joy Division' where they were talking about a club show that they did in America and Barney was in a very bad mood and said to the audience something like "Your just about the most unresponsive crowd we've ever played to. Yank Bastards" ... and "How does it feel to stand in front of a bunch of fuckin cunts like you" ....

Think it was just the mixing at fault? From what I remember you could just hear the beat and all the frail bits that sit on top were drowned out. Probably too 'fragile' a song to consider playing at an outdoor festival at 2am in the morning, or whatever it was..

Is it possible to write & record an album track then have it published on vinyl just 5 months later? Must've been a good couple of months before that, surely? And this is(was?) Factory we're talking about.. .

And the Scandies all carry bizarre 'Standards' (like the Romans had) down the front. Saw various ones for Dreams Never End, Ceremony, etc.

They wrote Love Vigilantes, TToN, Sub-culture, Elegia and Let's Go at the same time, all in the studio November/December 1984. They were all finished by the time it came to the January gigs. I remember reading an interview with Barney after the August gigs, when he said that they were in the studio at the end of the year to record the next album. I'll see if I can dig it out when I next go home.
