An Intro to Joy Division

Made a compilation cdr for someone just getting into the band (person loves NIN and Depeche Mode for reference). Clocks in at just about 79 minutes and I like the flow of it after a couple of iterations. I only used studio versions from the remastered box set, even though I personally like some live versions better (this person is not quite ready for live JD experience I'm afraid!). Let me know what you think of this as an intro to the band:

get a longer CDR and also put the demo of 'in a lonely place' last. any self loathing NIN, Depeche Mode fan will squeal with delight when they hear that for the first time, plus it cuts out in true JD fashion at the end.

Disorder instead of Passover, These Days instead of A Means To An End

nice running order there. yes also agree with using Disorder as track no.1.

Using a live recording or two is an idea for CDr2 as it shows what the Band were made of. Tossed (with care) into the Deep end and all.

Good comments, and both Disorder and These Days will make it onto the 90min double vinyl and cassette versions! Each of these were finalists - do you know how hard it is to make a 17 track JD sampler?

Interesting that one of you didn't care for Passover or Means to an End - those are two of my faves actually, thought I prefer the live versions of these songs.

I thought back on my first intro to JD and it was (like many) Substance - that cd has some great songs but it also has some very off-putting ones too. In response to the person who suggested a second live disc, it occured to me how great the album Still is as an overview of JD - some atmosphere, some punk, some guitar tunes and a great live concert as well; too bad the sound quality is so poor.

I forgot to mention that Still also has probably the greatest song in the JD/NO canon, albeit in a bastardized bootleggish version - the mighty Ceremony!

I like your mix better. It has some songs from Still...

like Unknown Pleasures a lot too.....

Any JD compilation has to include Disorder I'm afraid.It's essential.& law I think in some parts of the World.No arguments.No opinion.No debate.LAW!

& as much as i love The Eternal,maybe it's a bit heavy going as an intro'? Only my opinion.Other than that,it's pretty good

Digital and Colony as well as Disorder; all essentials for me.

nice that 1. you've done this for your friend. 2. That there is then the interest for a second round. 3. yumm. for D-vinyl and cassette versions. yes, agree with cosmothat Komakino could use a place on it. Like 'darren clark's list there too. Compilations can be a lot of fun.

Sure beats that crock of shite Permanent CD

Decades is the greatest song! I'm trying to learn how to play it. I know it must be easy but I'm having trouble with the first synth lines (I'm bad with notes or something, but it comes out like a circus accordeon). Can't get it right.

Permanent has cool artwork by Saville, and that is about it. Sound quality is better than Substance, but the versions used, the songs left off, the extra space at the end of the disc, and repeating LWTUA with a worthless remix were unforgivable.

Darren's mix is good too. I would think that if you asked 20 different fans for an "intro" you would get 20 different track listings...

The Eternal is a heavy track, as is Decades but I love them both. My friend may find it amusing that these come in the setlist before the big hit LWTUA (hey, I didn't title this Greatest Hits of Joy Division!)

I tend to think though for a band that only has 2 albums and few a comps after, the best intro is to listen to Unknown Pleasures and Closer. I know they don't include the singles of Transmissiona and LWTUA, etc., but they are complete packages as an album. Just my two cents.
