actually it's on the 12" FAC 63.
in digital format it's on the Retro CD set but if you think the 7" version is "terrible", maybe you should save your money.
Buy either the Canadian 1981-FEP 313-1982 CD or Retro box set (it's on Disc one).
Bit cheeky using yer first post to try and scrounge free MP3s

How's the Trainspotting version terrible? I really like it. In some ways I like it better than the album version.

It's definately the 12" I'm looking for -- they even play a brief snip of it on the site here (in the songs section).
C'mon - one of you big fans must have it. I've tried Limewire, .com CD stores, and ebay -- no luck. Ebay's got the 12" vinyl version in the UK but alas, I've got no record player. There's also the 4 CD retro set going on ebay for $50 US. I don't think I want to pay that for one song. Pleeeeeeease!!!! One of you must have it!!!
Oh, and the way in which the Trainspotting version is terrible is (IMHO)... they don't double up the vocal track, he hangs on to certain notes for too long, the drums are different -- I'd say chincey, and the way the 12" version kicks in is freakin' fabulous! It's much heavier in the bass, the guitars are better and it's got a much darker edge to it. Kind of reminiscent of Joy Division.
So pleaaaase. If you've got one of these 3 albumbs on CD, please please please zip "temptation" (12" version) and email it to me!

- just buy Retro if you really want it, as has been said... 2) other than that hunt for the mp3 at the usual sources, the hunt is part of the fun
- and as had also been said, if you hate the original 7", you will really hate the longer original 12"... if you hate both the 7" and the Trainspotting version, you simply don't like the song

Have you ever heard somebody do a horrible job of singing a really good song -- and yes it can massacred by the people who wrote it. To me that's what the 7" and trainspotting one sounds like. I grew up on the 12", I had a tape of it and it rocked my punk a*ss little world.
Now I hear it again and the groove is definately there.
Nick, cheers for the suggestions, but I found a free one -- ironically the vinyal's in the mail, even though I have no record player.

the original 12" and the 7" are from the same session released in 1982, just edited differently. I heard the 12" version first of all back years ago.
New Order rerecorded "Temptation" for the Substance compilation in 1987, which is the source of the Trainspotting track, and some other compilations also
New Order also had rerecorded it again in 1998
I still am kind of baffled how the 7" sucks and the 12" is great but whatever

That's what producers are for, to say "what the hell is that? and whatever it is, we don't want it noising up the song."
Might as well get one of them little kid xylophones with the multicoloured keyboards and throw a track of that in there while we're at it.

Bernard must have liked it because from 1987 on he's been playing that 'twang' in every live version of Temptation. 
Obviously we're all wrong and Andy is right.
Personally, I'm incredibly glad he popped up to correct our opinions as I foolishly thought both the 7" and the 1987 versions were marvellous. Just goes to show how wrong you can be eh? Plus Barney should definitely take note over his outrageously stupid guitar noise at the start of the 7"/live versions, what does he think he's doing?!

That idiot producer who let it stay was basically Bernard Sumner, so I guess he is to blame
I'm not saying it is wrong to love and want the original 12", many here at this site do and have. I've got it on vinyl twice and CD twice. The formerly obscure 7" could be seen as just a teaser for the 12", I dunno, but I still like it. I don't hate the newer version either.
To be frank, Bernard's vocals are a hell of a lot better on the '87 version than on the 7". Much better pitch.
Ah, and just because Bernard likes it, does that make it gold? Must we like everything Bernard likes? Is Bernard not capable of brain farts. Oh, I forgot, this is the site where he is God...
Nor am I saying everyone has to like what I like. But it was asked of me why I thought the 7" and trainspotting versions were terrible, and I gave my reply.
Christ, just go into a studio sometime and see bandmates arguing themselves over shite like this. Of course there's disagreements as to how to achieve perfection -- and you know what, half the time they probably make decisions that would reduce it's quality according to your tastes.
So -- is it alright then, New Order fans, that I like one version of the song better than the others, to the point in fact that if I hear the other versions I lament that they were even made?
