Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

They should induct Joy Division/New Order together as one unit. It makes more sense than Neil Young getting in 3 separate times for music he created in a 4 year period: Buffalo Springfield/Crosby Stills Nash & Young & Neil Young solo.

It'll never happen. The American Cock n' Roll Hall of Fame is hardly likely to recognize a band widely considered in the U.S. to be on the same par with Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, and other bands of the retro-cheese "new wave" definition.

And as much as I like him, that is a bit overkill on Neil Young. One induction is good enough for him.

is it really that important whether or not NO or JD are inducted into the hall of fame? these awards are just sycophantic, anyway.

But I still feel that JD/NO should be inducted in our Hall of Fame; both groups influence some bands today...

Petitions will do no good (and it's not like I really care anyway). Jeff Tamarkin who was once in the HoF committee wrote this in response to a petition to get Warren Zevon in:

This is all very noble but what most folks don't realize is that these petitions go nowhere and do nothing. You would have to send it to each and every member of the Hall of Fame's nominating committee for them to ever see it. And of course the Hall likes to keep that membership and the member' addresses a big secret. By just sending it generically to the Hall of Fame it probably ends up in the garbage. I know this for a fact because I was on the committee for two years. And even then, these petitions are regarded as a joke. As I think I've mentioned here before I once presented a petition with 5000 signatures to get the Moody Blues nominated (not because I care about them - I don't - but because 5000 people took the time to do that) and in about two seconds it was shot down by Springsteen's manager Jon Landau and his pals like Dave Marsh. There was not even a discussion about whether they deserved it (which they do). Basically the HoF nominates who it wants to nominate, based largely on personal preferences, friendships and favors, and doesn't care a whit for what the public wants."

I don't think Americans regard New Order/Joy Division as "rock". Sometimes, I get the impression that the only music that Americans regard as "music" are "macho rock music, hiphop/r&b/rap chav music, and country & western". Sad reality, though.:(

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame may have inducted some well-desevered artists, however it lacks legitimacy and credibility. The fact that it is located in Ohio says enough. Leave JD/NO out of this.

The Rock&Roll HofF is run by baby boomers.

Baby boomers do not like or understand JD/NO.

I don't think it matters whether the band are in the US Hall of Fame or not. It isn't gonna make any difference to record sales, and nobody outside the US gives a monkeys about the US Hall of Fame anyway! They are already in the British one, which is the one that counts to British bands (if any of them matter!).

Most of the big wigs in the US industry nowdays would be "who?" "Oh,those guys who had that Blue Love Triangle/Bizarre Monday hit..."

As a Brit,when N.O. were inducted into ours,I just felt such a personal pride that finally my favourite band were getting the recognition,in whatever way,that they richly deserved,that the rest of the N.O.-ignorant music industry were being made aware of such an original,influential & highly respected 'secret'.I don't need anyone,being it in an awards ceremony or such,to tell me how fucking great N.O/J.D. are.I know already.But it's very nice when it happens & I get a lump in the back of my throat.Awww...

hell, the Velvet Underground just barely got in and it drew blank stares from many, while the Stooges are ignored... Depeche Mode has a better chance...:(

The British Rock Hall of Fame is an absolute joke. No hall, no building, no monument just Jamie Theakston hosting some 2nd rate TV show. OK JD/NO got inducted in the 2nd year but so did Ozzy Osbourne.

At least the Americans have an iconic building in Cleveland designed by one of the world's greatest architects I.M.Pei. They have a cool collection and some tremendous temporary shows and a vibrant events programme eg. the current Clash exhibition.

Rock and pop music is one of Britain's greatest exports but we have nowhere to showcase it. The only thing that offers any concession to acknowledging our great musical legacy is Urbis in Manchester.
