Temptation for Reason

If you happen to use Reason, I have patched up a little song that will allow you to play both the top and bottom parts of temptation, in the exact same way Gillian used to ( and phill still does with the top part).

You will need....

Reason 3 A MIDI keyboard (it will need to able to transmit it's lower keyboard on one channel and it's upper keyboard on another channel, one and two respectively, in order for you to be able to play both parts....if your keyboard only Tx's on one channel you have to choose which part you want to play.) BTW, the song is set for MIDI input on Bus-B cos my system is set like that, you'll probably need to reassign it.

You will also need THIS file.

Barney Army, if you are reading this, I can think of a couple of ways to do what you want (you want the gate-groove to start when you key-on if I recall correctly), but as yet cannot work out how in reason....you either need to be able to sample and loop CV....or use a keyed ( side chained) noise gate), can Reason load VST plugs? I only installed R3 about 4 hours ago, so forgive stupidity.

PS...if you add a couple of events to the hi hat part on the Re-Drum, you can get the gate pattern for BLT too.

PPS, drop the top synth 2 octaves, and you can play EGG as well

Steve, I understood you perfectly at the weekend, but back on here :confused2:  :thumb:

after recent threads regarding how Gillian did what on temptation, and while trying to sort something for BA, I made this so that, if you have the right software and right sort of keyboard, you can play both parts of temptation exactly as Gillian would have "back in the day". It's even done using a virtual implementation of the exact method she used (although a DR55 isn't quite as cool as the Re-Drum in Reason.

Shit man, good work.

Now I'm aching for a midi-enabled keyboard...

cheers Steve I'll take a look at it tonight.

Reason dont do VST unfortunately, Cubase can do Reason synths via Rewire but not the other way round. As far as I know anyway.

As for the triggering, doesnt have to be Reason, I could do it with Cubase if poss, got a midi drum machine (yamaha RY-20), would even get a second hand DR-55 if I knew a way of getting it to trigger its pattern via a midi keyboard. Got a midi Roland synth module if that helps.

Did new order manage it or does Gillian just keep continously playing during temptation?

Same as this, when she keys-off, the sound stops, and no matter how sloppily she plays the next key, sod all will come out until the next step with a trigger is reached.

What you're after will be trickier. I'm just looking at a sidechained noisegate at the minute. What I think you'll need to do, is record an instrument playing the "gate-pattern", sample that, loop it, and then assign it to play under the actual "sounding" instrument on the same midi channel, with it's putput feeding the side-chain input on the gate. That leaves other questions...how should it be played...straight through to the end each time a key is played after it last finished, or just retrigger on each key-on.....quite a lot of options. Perhaps the ultimate way to do it, wold be to have the pattern on one key, with a flat key-on/key-off envelope, then you can play to your heart's content with your right hand, and cut the gating in and out with your left.

ahh, gotcha :thumb:

actually, maybe I'll just sample the whole part? then i dont even need to worry getting the notes right once sampled

even Phil could play it then

They still turn it over to the mac :(

Anyway...look at this....

Read this.....

A lot of Compressor plugs are sidechaining-capable. for years.

Method 1: sidechain-routing in a very special plugin-to-plugin-method, implemented by tc native essentials comp, db-audioware-compressor and the quoted twistedlemon.

Mehtod 2: One of the pluginґs inputs is defined as sidechain-input, as with the kjaerhus-compressors. the GUP-1 for example has 4 inputs and 2 outputs. Input 1-2 is the main signal, Input 3-4 the sidechain-input. 3-4 will be ignored if you insert it on a stereo-track or -group, which is done by most people. What you need is a quadro group with 4 channels. Insert the plugin there. Route the main signal to the group. The panner of the channel will change as you route it to a quadro group. 1-2 means front-1-2 of the quadro group, so place the dot of the appearing surround-panner on the upper middle of the rectangle (maybe lower middle, dunno atm) so your stereo-main-signal is routed properly. Then select whichever sidechaining-source you want, create a send to your quadro-group and adjust the appearing send-surround-panner to 3-4 so the send-signal reaches the back-channels of the group. There you go.

This way you can sidechain from every single channel you whish (only limited by cubaseґs goddamn bus-order-"bug", i.e. routing from a freshly created group to an already existing will NOT work.)

Same works for the mono-versions, but there are 2 inputs and 1 output, 1-in is main, 2-in is sidechain. of course you dont need a quadro for this, but a stereo-group.

And you will see how to do it using a noise gate in Cubase you then make the "trigger" sound, a sample of whatever the "trigger" midi track is playing. layer that with your "notes" sound (2 outputs from the same sampler will be easiest)...or put a variety of different trigger patterns on the bottom octave of a split keygroup.

There's a cop out way as well....get "phatsync" and program your trigger pattern into it.

you may need top save that jpg or open it in it's own window to see it all, the forum seems to constrict pics these days, although more likely I've fucked my browser

I'll have a look at that. I wanted something like this ages back to have a programmable arpeggiator. Although its pushing my knowledge a bit having never set foot in a studio

I did find a solution that almost worked. Hooked up Cubase & Reason, got a Cubase midi track to play the reason device and remapped the midi data of the first key of temptation in Reason to the 'run' button of the pattern generator. Thought I had cracked it until pressing the key again stopped the device...doh! If only it had start/stop buttons and not a toggle. But if you just play with that key held down and set the synth polyphony to 1 it works.
