In these times, we all need a kooky, offbeat, or just plain bizarre song to embrace and love, to take care of and nurture, until the little thing grows to be a spoiled little brat that doesn't appreciate all the sacrifices you've made, constatnly verbally abusing you for "neglect" when you sweated your ass off at the local factory for 16 fucking hours and thus cannot possibly share "quality time"...okay, that was a freaky tangent, but anyways--what song do you hold near and dear that might just freak out your friends and relatives?

Mine is "Here Come the Martian Martians" by Jonathan Richman, btw.

Either "S-S-S-Star Eyes" by Colin Newman or "I Am the Fly" (also by Colin Newman, via Wire).

Happy Boy by the Beat Farmers....very cheesy song from the mid-80s with the back-up vocal line of "Hubba Hubba Hubba Hubba Hubba!" Friends of Mojo Nixon, I think. (there's a man with a lot of offbeat songs!)

How about Jonathan Richman's Not Yet Three, where he's singing from the view of a 3 year old kid? "I'm stronger than you, you're simply bigger than me"

One of the strangest tracks in my collection is Saint Etienne's version of Right Said Fred's "I'm Too Sexy". If you haven't heard it (it was on "The Fred EP" on Heavenly Records' along with Flowered Up's version of "Don't Talk Just Kiss" and The Rockingbirds' version of "Deeply Dippy") they turned it into a deep techno/acid track over which a traditional piano and a vocodered whistle occasionally plays the melody. Bob or Pete (I don't know which) intones the verses (some of which they've changed) and Sarah coos the chorus. Amazingly all of this works and even more amazingly when I tried to put it into a mix album I was making on my computer it didn't sound out of place.

It's Pete Wiggs who sings the gruff bits it made me laff anyway...even though you've probably guessed I'm a H-U-G-E Saint Etienne fan from day one...got some great pix of me and divine luscious slinky Silvakrin babe Sarah Cracknell that I wish I could put up in my profile but would probably incite lots of death threats made against me from a lot of the disaffected males here through pure jealousy and resentment.... but I'll still do it one day...

Whilst out tonight, stuck in an old tape, and one of the songs on said tape was I Spent My Last $10 On Birth Control And Beer by the lesbian group Two Nice Girls,not that there's anything wrong with that, who I believe put out a couple of records on Rough Trade. This song never fails to get a reaction or a good laugh from the people who've heard it.

The song is a c'n'w tale of woe about a lesbian who foregoes women to have a relationship with an insensitive drunken male oaf. After the title of the song is sung, the next line is "My life was so much simpler when I was sober and queer".
