At least from an artistic standpoint. I would not have minded if they had gone in this direction for their two records....hence not the whole album... The rest of the album would be a blend of Joy Division's dark goth and mood pieces....but I think Failures is a great great punk song.....

It was an early song that they soon grew out of, as they learned to play their instruments etc and Ian learned how to write lyrics and sing them. Not their finest two minutes. They developed at such an amazing rate between early 1978 and 1980 that so much stuff got left behind rapidly.
Failures was a song typical of the sub-punk stuff being churned out by more than half the other bands they played with - Joy Division were better than that and soon realised it!

Yes it's not sequencer based or filled with electonics or anything, but it's still a damn good song.

Well yes it has a certain catchiness to it, but it has always been my least favourite Joy Division effort, it sounds weak and horribly dated to me. It sounded dated on the Ideal For Living EP even!
I like it for its pace and bass line. I love it when it ascends and descends the scales.

Bassline is good, yes, but there are a couple of really messy bits overall where it is just about hanging together, where Bernard's lack of prowess at the time is most evident.
If you really like it so much, just listen to the RCA demo album. Contains all the badly produced early crap tracks you'll need.
I may or may have not heard this song. Despite any glitches and what have you, I still like all of JD's music. To be honest, I am more a fan of Joy Division's music than New Order, even though I heard New Order first. I like NO though. They've done some brilliant stuff.:)

The RCA version is much less 'messy'...I think the end guitar solo on the Ideal for Living version meanders a bit but it's probably more intricate than anything Barney's attempted since.
