You know, Bernard can really sing when he puts his heart into it. I've heard some people say he can't sing. Well no one is going to be perfect at it all the time. Unless you're Tori Amos but I've heard her off key before....:D

Well, as a Barney's Angels member I agree with you, stellar. Although I have to admit I screamed in horror when I saw him doing the can-opener move on the 511 DVD...
Barney has a shite voice ( mind you I like it). He also has NO mic technique whatsoever, in fact he has nothing that any professional singer should have.
I've said it before and I will say it again.....doing away with the keyboards on the grounds that they failed all the time, was stupid, Barney fucked up 10 times for every mistake the electronics made. If yer sacking the weakest link, it's gotta be barney.
Having said that, I love his singing, no matter how dodgy it is, and he does write the finest lyrical couplets since William Shakespeare.

According to steven hague (shite producer but someone that does know what they're talking about, and has several successes to prove it) his mic technique is fantastic, he does use a hand held mike in the studio, rather than a propper studio mic, but knows when to tilt and back off, try reading some old copies of sound on sound.
his singing has improved a lot over the years and is helped by the fact that the band now write in keys more suited to barney, whereas in the early days the music was written and barney had to fit around it.
Live he fucks up, everyone does especially when pissed, alcohol relaxes the throat and makes it unreliable.
As someone who is shit at singing, but tries, because we can't find a decent singer, I know it's hard, give the bloke a break.
As for the synths, I have to agree, keep it sequenced live rather than pre recorded, they're a lot more reliable these days.

Barney shouldn't be a singer, his voice is very limited, however, he's one of my faves.
And may I say that I love his voice, I think it's probably the most simple voice I have ever listened to.
You don't need to have a voice like George Michael to show emotions thru it.
Regarding his dancing habilities... or better said the lack of them. I think a person needs a lot of courage to stand in front of thousands of people and dance like that. I know I couldn't do it. So good for you Barney! 
I HATE professional, technically sound singers. (Mariah, Whitney, Christina, Bono, etc) They're boring and way too polished.
Most of my favourite singers don't have rich voices, they just have an appealing sound, Barney being one of the best examples.
I hope he doesn't fall down dancing like I've seen him dance. I think he should yell the songs sometimes. Really, he was made for a punk band....maybe. He has that voice for that sort of thing though.

Regarding Bernard's 'mic technique'.According to Stephen Hague[and he should know] Bernard has:
"quite good instincts with the mic — when he hits something a bit harder, he instinctively changes the angle a little bit, and not everyone has that kind of intuition. Barney may not be a big crooner, but he has a natural sense of how he's affecting the mic capsule."

Well he may be great at it in the studio, but he's bollox live.
Mind you.....NO's engineers set the mics wrong anyway, when Barney DOES back off on a big note, his voice vanishes. I've noticed this on a lot of recent bootlegs, it's hard to say why it happens, could be the mic, but more like the gain structure of the mic's signal path.
Mic technique for those who asked, invovles such things as going closer when singing quietly, and backing off on louder notes, as well as knowing when to tilt the mic off axi to avoid plosives (P pops) and sibilance (F's and S's).
I am TOTALLY GOBSMACKED that he uses a handheld in a studio, that's normally a BIG no-no, cos you get a load of mechanical noise from your hand through the mic's chassis....no worries on a stage, but a MAJOR ass-pain in a studio.
Well, he did take singing lessons for Technique. I guess you're saying that the lessons didn't help? I didn't think he was that horrible in the bootlegs...
Of course, I don't own NO bootlegs. Still, I'm surprised at the vocal differences...

He's a mic eater, not a unique fault, and it's improved over the years.

Actually, it's just TOO easy.
Similar to what other people have said, my favourite voices tend to be "flawed" rather than perfect. I think these sorts of voices have more to communicate (to me at least) and they're a lot more interesting. Bernard's one of my two favourite singers: I love his unique timbre, and imperfections in performance just tend to be endearing. I guess there are people who say he shouldn't be a singer, but MAN, I'm glad he is!!

Well, Ness, I didn't expect a response to my avatar (after all, this is a post about Bernard). I changed my avatar (from flashback of the trivet) to the current one and the "happy caption" sometime after Fall Break. Let's just say that I'm happy with my relationship. Yesterday was our 6 month anniversary, btw. :D

How do you calculate a six month anniversary? Is it to the day number six months later or counting 26 weeks exactly? Hell why not celebrate both?
