Factory Records. The Complete Graphic Album

Thames & Hudson is about to edit Factory Records´ (the legendary record label from Manchester) Fact-461. If you´re interested in design as wel as in music then you´ll want to have this book.

Compilation was made by Matthew Robertson, graphic designer and Factory related material collector. He documents all the graphic work made by the label between 1978 and 1992.

Under the brand Factory Records, home of the mistic bands Joy Division, New Order, A Certain Ratio or Happy Mondays, creators of the legendary club Hacienda, Tony Wilson -label´s co-founder- and their partners -great designers as Peter Saville or studios like Central Station Design or 8vo- joined and avangardist and contemporary design with risky though commercial music like few others before.

The book compiles the label´s graphic history and it has a prologue by Tony Wilson himself, who had the funny idea of putting a catalog number to each and every thing they produced from records to flyers, posters, office paperwork, architectural projects… It´s all in the book.

Don't know what you mean by 'about to edit', I've had it sitting on my shelf for a few weeks now.

It's superb. Especially like the underrated Central Station Design.

It's a great book because it highlights a canon of work that was completely off the radar of Baby Boomers, all the while gloating that 'you kids' have no originality, 'not like us Boomers, who were the hieght of artistic achievement you will never be able to match'.

So never got the attention it deserved, not in North America anyway.

It is a great coffee table book, however like the Saville show I was more than a little disappointed at the condition of some of the objects, creases and dirt on many covers. Nice to have though.

Was in MANCHESTER yesterday and bought a copy of this book which is STILL sealed so i won't know it's CONTENTS to XMAS day.Looking forward to having a BROWSE.Thanks for the info though.

This book is absolutely FANTASTIC.As good and indeed BETTER in parts than SAVILLE's DESIGNED BY.The photos are excellent but the in-depth information on the SLEEVES is great.Now i know why FAC 53 came out in those NINE colours.And why the SHELLSHOCK cover looks like it does!Want to KNOW why? From this book then, which piece of work (art?) would you like to own most solely on the artwork itself and which are you most pleased to own? Also what should hav been in there but wasn't?

Already own: FAC 58 Stockholm Monsters Happy Ever After 7" with fliptop sleeve. Looks good scaled down but is an ace sleeve.

Would most like: A running sheet P 89 would look good on the wall.

Should have been in: In true factory style a page of tracing paper for the low life sleeve would haave been nice and I prefer the US sleeve to the UK one. FBN release of TPK, some of the stuff from the Saville exhibition would hve been nice, fonts and that kind of thing - how he went about designing some of the sleeves.

Great book though.

Just got this book yesterday as a present from my brother, which was a proper Christmas surprise (which are quite rare these days)...had a quick look, and it looks pretty damn good to me!! Should keep us entertained for a little while me thinks! :-)

I woulda thought that there were also nine colours of Procession so they more more collectable and sold more.

Although i'm willing to bet that they would have all made a loss anyway :evil4:

I can't decide what i would like to own the most.Like DESIGNED BY i keep looking at certain items and noticing some FAULT in them.Didn't they have a MINTY MINT one kept in a NUCLEAR BUNKER in case of emergency?Beggars BELIEF! :nonono: :lol:

This morning went to Foyles (Charing Cross Road - London) and got a Minty Mint New copy of this excellent book (still sealed) for the princely sum of £12.50 (normal price £29.99).

I think this offer is not available on their website - only in-store. By the way they had plenty left this morning if anyone is interested.

Got this as a surprise present and was very happy when I unwrapped it. Shocked there were items with less than perfect conditions, as Mick intimated.. where's that secret cache of minted bunker-safe copies? :evil4:

The first thing that ran into my mind on some of the full page graphics was "personal t-shirt transfers" because I'm cheap like that. Had fun tracing some of the designs onto Shrinky paper for new keychain and earring material, though. Turned out nice.:D

Uncly John & Lorraine got me this for ma birthday :clap:

Fucking great wee book, read through it today. The biggest thing that I never guessed was the ladder to God on the TBTHOG sleeve. Genius that! The book also got me thinking to where the fcuk all my old music t-shirts went, I had loads! Espescially the later stuff like the Mondays & Northside.

Anyone who hasnae got this book should seek it out

As an interesting side note, I just watched the Hatton fight and at the end a few of the people from Manchester had placards with "Hatton pride of Manchester" around the edges of these were the famous Hacienda Yellow & Black stripes :nod:
