JD Norse 'uns?

Who around here has ever been to a JD gig?

What were your memories of it?

P.S. Peel Day 2006 (or was it 05?) doesn't count!

I did - Manchester Apollo Oct 1979 supporting Buzzcocks, but because I wasn't into JD at the time, I didn't pay any attention at all. I'd listened to UP and only liked She's Lost Control from it - but I WAS only 17 and hadn't mixed with the right people, musically speaking.

Criminal. Absolutely criminal.

I first saw them at the old Factory Club in Oct 78 with the Cabs.

Saw 'em again around 12 or 13 times more. Last one was The Lyceum in Feb(?) 1980. I keep meaning to get a definitive list together - I will have to look at the gigography to remind me after all these years.

Definites :

1979 : Sheffield Limit Club (shitehole!), Leeds Roots Club, Leeds Futurama, Factory Club again, Leeds Uni, Derby, Manc Apollo.

1980 : ULU, Preston, Lyceum

Thoughts/impressions : I knew they were something very different and special right away, even if I couldn't say exactly what it was about them. IC was obviously a big factor in that - a magnetic, intense frontman. I guess it was the sheer power and hugeness of the sound that separated them out from the other bands I had seen up to then. Only the Sex Pistols came close. There was something hypnotic and controlled about JD that was new to me. Up to then I'd only really seen punk bands and while I loved the likes of the Pistols, Clash, Buzzcocks + tons of smaller, more local bands, JD seemed to be worlds apart from that scene - more serious, more enigmatic and driven.

joy division 1979 at the apollo had seen them on telly the previous month (something else) and was realy looking forward to the gig,,sister janet gave me her copy of transmission and a friend lent me unknown pleasures,,,,, was in the bar for the first part of show(j.d supported buzzcocks) but managed to see them,,transmission was absolutley a memeory that never fades so stuck in the rewind box as a powerfull image ,,, they even said goodnight,,,i knew iwould be seeing them again,,,,didt anticipate the change inline up though..

funnily enough although order have played transmission lots ,, it wasnt until wembley this year that i thought they had captured the knock you back in your seat vibe of it.......

ive been waiting for a guide to come..

completely understand the feeling coz I was born in 1982 dammit...I wanted to be there at that time
