Maybe they should have just shown the vid on TOTP.....

The 12" is released today, so expect a second coming. Not.

i dont know whether its a such a bad thing, i,ve never considered new order as a charts band.. you only have to listen to the shit that the record buying public lap up and its enough to put you off caring about chart positions.. truth be known i,m probably glad new order dont make music for the masses

Why release the 12' after the CD? This is the final piece of information in my extensive investagation, which has revealed London Records to be wankers. The end.

I think the vinyl's 'chart ineligible' anyway. It's a lost cause.

Interesting that there was so much support for HTS amongst the NO faithful and yet so poor a chart return.

I think you're right. The format has to have three tracks maximum to qualify. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'll buy it tomorrow, so it will go back up again. Ain't even been near a record shop yet, or seen the film ! If it's gonna take them 6 months to re-program Perfect Kiss, it's gonna take me 6 months to get me arse in gear to buy the current offerings.

you mean even with all that radio play it dropped 28 places?

oh hang on, there wasn't any was there. meanwhile songs that arent even released yet & songs that have been long out the charts continue to dominate daytime radio...

Hell, I'll run out at lunch and buy two copies today.

Oh wait...it hasn't been released here. Or 60 Miles an Hour. Or Someone Like You. I guess that's one way to avoid a poor chart performance.

One word for the marketing geniuses: "sticker." The Chems are at the top of the electronic chart over here and holding on tight. Do you think it would hurt to put out a single with a "Chemical Brothers" sticker on the front? Same with "Turn My Way"..."featuring Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins," who were selling out a stadium tour a few years ago.

Ouch.

It's a somewhat disturbing state of affairs if they need to ride on others' popularity to enhance sales. Both Billy and the Chems worshipped the Order 'back in the day'.

Hmm i'd have to agree...

No have never really done that well in the charts anyway, bar the obvious. What is it 7 top ten singles including JD and WIM in 20 odd years. Not exactly U2 is it....

 yes. the Order, for one, don't make me dearly wish to stick sporks in my eyes. unlike the letter U and the numeral 2. :finger:

Hey, if you shrink that chart, it looks like a Peter Saville Joy Division sleeve. Cool.

True. I for one would like to see Here To Stay released in the states with a big fat sticker on the front proclaiming, "NOT FEATURING A DUET WITH GWEN STEFANI OF NO DOUBT."

Dear sweet Jesus...inspired by this thread, I decided to trek over to Billboard.com to see what's on the charts here this week. To understand how thoroughly things are f%#$ed up over here, keep in mind that I made up only spots 6 through 10...the first five are...REAL!

1 "Foolish," Ashanti

2 "What's Luv?," Fat Joe Featuring Ashanti

3 "U Don't Have To Call," Usher

4 "I Need A Girl (Part One)," P. Diddy Featuring Usher & Loon

5 "Ain't It Funny," Jennifer Lopez Featuring Ja Rule

6 "It Ain't Foolish," Ja Rule Featuring Ashanti

7 "U Don't Need A Girl (Part Two)," P. Diddy & Fat Joe Featuring Loon

8 "Who's Fat Joe?" Usher & Ashanti Featuring P. Diddy

9 "U Don't Need Ashanti," Usher, P. Diddy, & Ja Rule Featuring Jennifer Lopez

10 "U Don't Have To Call Jennifer Lopez To Need A Foolish Girl (Duet With Gwen Stefani)," Ashanti & P. Diddy With Ja Rule Featuring Loon & Usher

...and i bet your five would be much better than the real five in that list, Gnu.

'swhy i can't be bothered to pay attention to any of this chart stuff. and haven't for years. it's annoying, depressing...a whole bunch of badness by turns. featuring Gwen Stefani. :nonono:

this just goes to reinforce my general feeling of SCREW THE CHARTS. :finger:

(by the same token, if by some complete fluke someone worthwhile charts and gets more acclaim/money/what have you as a result, and is deserving of that...more power to them. but as that rarely ever happens, well... :violent: )

Here's where it gets even funnier, thus you wonder what the point of it all is - the 12" is a FOUR-TRACK and is actually not eligible for the charts, so no matter what it sells, it won't stop the decline one iota.

ANYWAY, A TOTP APPEARANCE OF NEW ORDER ONLY HELPS TO ACCELERATE THE RECORD'S DROP DOWN THE CHART!! WHAT DID YOU EXPECT TO HAPPEN??!!! (if they didn't show up - the record may have even - gasp! - stayed another week inside the 40 come to that!) :nonono:

Similarly, Doves have dived out of the 30 (dropping an even bigger 31 places to no.34) and Pulp have nosedived 25 places to no. 52..... so they're all in the sinking boat together by the looks of it. If things were perfect Oarsis would drop 40 places to 44 next weekend. Fingers crossed.... And will The Chemicals drop out in the same spectacular way next weekend???

Since the early 90's, the charts (ANY charts, come to that) have always been a joke that's pretty safe to say... they mean jackshit.......indeed! ;)

The 12" I got had a sticker... (and pretty it was too!)

Remember the promos were actually stickered with this "Chemical Brothers" credit to help push its chances saleswise, but they delayed it so long that by the time it was due for release the Chems only went and readied their own newie with chief Lemon-sucker Ashcroft in tow for official release the week after, so it made a complete nonsense of everything didn't it?? I'm sure that, had "HTS" been touted as a bona-fide "NEW ORDER vs THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS" collaboration as initially speculated, it would have meant both camps of fans hopefully buying it, thus meaning a much better performance sales-wise not to mention chartwise...

I think New Order should start going out of their way to avoid such pathetic meaningless trivialities as fooking "chart return credentials" in future and should try and exercise some of their own fooking control for a change as to what actually goes on the bloody 12's and CD's they bung out - how about five or six-track eps that will automatically be disqualified for the "chart" anyway?

How about (like with the sporadic Vinyl 12"s of "Crystal" and "Someone Like You" - and now, "HTS" of course - that came weeks out after the "official chart-friendly" formats) doing this on a regular or even permanent basis? The fans know what they're buying, why should it have to "compete" with all that other tosh just for the sake of a tokenistic trophy of a fooking paltry "Chart position"? Does it matter if it sells truckloads in the first few weeks or over the course of time? Why can't they just opt out altogether then? I mean the vinyl version of "HTS" released yesterday is selling at HMV for a disgracefully extortionate SIX QUID!! What the fook's that all about?? And what the fook is the album version of "Crystal" doing on it yet again?? Why not include the three non-lp cuts "Sabotage" / "Player ITL" / "Behind CD" - that made it onto the CD versions of the last three releases - especially considering they were never issued on vinyl to begin with? Wouldn't that have made more sense? Then you'd have a six-track EP with three new songs (the HTS mixes) and three old B-sides for the completists. No one else other than New Order fans are going to buy it anyway, so what's the point in putting "Crystal" on the 12" again - seeing as it's already been issued in about 20 different tedious mixes previously? Some poor misguided attempt by London Records to try and tempt the casual buyer into parting with their hard-earned cash [cos "Crystal" happened to be a Top 10 hit last year] so that alone would help sell "HTS"? If that's the thinking then they could have just as easily bunged on "Blue Monday" instead in an even more cynical bid to flog a new record on the strength of a back catalogue favourite! But then if this was the thinking behind this particular release, it's completely futile anyway, not to mention contradictory, as they've gone and released it as a non-chart-eligible Four Track 12"!!!! Just goes to prove once and for all that the record company are clueless fuckwits par excellence !

London Records - the 2002 trophy for sheer incompetence beyond the call of duty awaits you -a Real Gold Turd on a Chrome-Plated Plaque.Come on down!!!

Like the idea of putting the b-sides onto a 12" mate:nod: Nevertheless - if I see the 12" - I'll buy it - always have, always will mate;) Can understand perfectly what yer saying though!

...now, the real question is...

...are you going to administer a proper *beating* with that award plaque, Marty? :D

Good rant Marty, fully agree. Actually Blue Monday would have been a better bet :evil4:coz there's a very vague possibility that someone may have bought HTS coz of the film, in which case they might have wanted a few cuts from the soundtrack. Mind you in saying that anyone who saw the film would probably own most of the back catalogue anyway. bollox. Actually they should have made an acoustic remix a la the film and chucked that on there instead -

I thought the classification thing was that you cuold have 4 tracks but it had to be under 20 mins? I'm probably wrong on that one though....

Fook knows what the rulings are these days - they change them as much as they change their underpants nowadays.....but yep I also likewise recall the ruling that 20 mins was the max length of a single and four tracks was the max number, but if memory serves me correct they amended that in 1999 to THREE track singles totalling 20 minutes to qualify for their stupid pathetic "chart rooling" - so maybe NO should tell them to stick it.

(remember - in 1983 "Confusion" was a four-tracker lasting more than 30 minutes in length! - so imagine how that would fare if it was released today in THAT format!! - rules rules rules!! Pathetic! So Arbitrary! So pointless!! Who cares??!!! - Fook the chart compilers! Interesting thought - how the heck do they explain the criteria for films then? Do they ALL have to be less than two hours long? I don't think so! And Novels! Must they ALL be less than 220 pages long to qualify?? I don't think so! Interesting argument, don't you think???)

F*** the charts, they'd wouldn't know good music if it bit them in the ass.
