New order and The Cure

Which songs by the cure sound like they have been directly copied from New Order. Dreams Never End has almost the same base line to a couple of Cure songs

the walk, high, fascination street..but i think they sound more as JD than NO, especially in the albums 17", faith and pornography.

"The Walk" is a total rip from "Blue Monday".

The Cure's "In Between Days" (released July 85) is a blatant copy of New Order's "Dreams Never End" (written July 1980).

New Order's "All The Way" (1989) is a blatant copy of The Cure's "Just Like Heaven".

There are several others that contain very similar parts, be they bassline, guitar riff or general feel, but none quite as obvious as these two.

First time I heard In Between Days was in a club. I was delighted by what I thought was a new New Order tune (or a Beloved single) until Fat Bob opened his gob!

I've never thought that Inbetween Days copies DNE as much as the guitar part of Temptation. Nice mix of both though, with some synths stolen from AOC thrown over the top.

In "Los Inrockuptibles", Argentine Magazine, appeared 2 month ago an inteview with Hooky made in France where he mentioned 10 influential songs in his history. When mentioning "A Forest" from The Cure he said (I'm translating): "Many people think they stole us many ideas, but in Joy Division era I stole them an entire bass line. We played two consecutive nights with them and I noticed their bassist had a very original way of playing. So, when we entered to studio to play "From Safety to Where" I repeated by heart what I remembered. So it makes me laugh when they are accused of stealing us because I was the one who began with the hostilities."

BTW, about Hooky's playing style:

"His playing position is also unusual. He tends to wear his bass hanging down around knee-level, with an extra-long strap, and then staggers around the stage while playing. The low-slung style was copied by Nicky Wire of The Manic Street Preachers and Simon Gallup from The Cure, with whom Joy Division performed as backing band at the legendary Marquee Club in 1979. Hook himself admitted to adopting the style after seeing all of his favourite players, such as Paul Simonon from The Clash, wear their bass guitars low."

Didn't Hooky say something along the lines of 'Loads of people have nicked ideas off us. It's no big deal, but The Cure have taken the piss at times.'

i'm sure new order get inspiration from other band material also

but at the end of the day it music we love, long may it continue

The Cure ripped off the bass-line of "This Time Of Night" for "A Forest". Those southern back-combed scoundrels. But our northern majesties stole it back for "Crystal". :evil:

Yeah, thought I'd cast a line for a laugh, looking for a bite. Looks like I got a tickle, though.

New Order must have had a field day getting back at Fat Bob & Co in 1985 - they actually parodied "A Forest" TWICE - on two successive tracks on "Low Life" - "This Time Of Night" being the first one (bass sequencer chords) and then the doomy synth intro to "Sunrise" is obviously very much influenced by the intro to "Forest" as well...

Serves them right I suppose, but then Fat Bob hit back again with "Inbetween Days" later that year, which I have to admit, was a great pop tune, even if it did have those whiney vocals.

I like The Cure and New Order pretty much equally. I don't really much care who ripped off who. I don't think that's either of the band's intentions.
