I have received a confirmation from Warner Music France that a New Order best of album is in the work.. they even ask us to send them our ideal tracklisting.

I have no idea if this is limited to France, but I'm quite surprised.. I told you about the box set, but I know this isn't the same thing.

So this is official news...! I'm just curious to read more about it.

Interesting mate - but did they not get the Best of in France? Gotta say - was disappointed with the some of the stuff on the best of, thought they might have included some more album tracks (even b-sides) instead of singles most people already had! Plus most of the stuff on there was edited down - was it not?

Follow up...

This is a projet in France & Englang. All fans, they would prefer real fans of course, can submit a tracklisting for that album.

74 mins / 15 songs.

I will get back to you when I'll know where to submit this!

I would prefer a "The Rarest Of New Order" featuring:

  • Run 2
  • Run 2 (Extended Mix)
  • Fine Line
  • Paradise (Remix)
  • Evil Dust
  • Let's Go (Nothing For Me)
  • Temptation '98
  • 60 mph (David Kahne Mix)
  • Isolation (Peel Session 98)
  • TBTHOG (Peel Session 98)
  • True Faith (Peel Session 98)
  • Paradise (Peel Session 98)
  • Atmosphere (Peel Session 98)

Thank You and Goodbye :evil4:

Please, please, please, please, PLEASE, PER-LEEEEEEZZZZZZE no more crappy, pointless "Best Of"s - I beg of them, in whatever denomination. I am fed up to the back teeth of them - look at The Smiths - more compilation albums than official studio albums. Ditto The Cure....twenty two albums - HALF OF them compilations/live albums/remix compilations.... If they MUST bring out the back catalogue - let's have the box set of ALL singles up to 1998. OR - as suggested by one of you above - an excellent idea too incidentally - a compilation of RARER, hard-to-obtain New Order material - like alternative/overseas remixes and vinyl-only releases/b-sides/demos/other versions...surely that would be more worthy of the devoted fans time and money......

Do you think if we all got together and followed the voting practices allegedly popular in certain parts of the UK (vote early vote often) we could force them into releasing an lp consisting of 12 different mixes of 'rocking christmas' and 'ode to joy'? (plus rock the shack)

Alternatively maybe even something consisting of entirely new material? Calling a new album 'greatest hits' would show a healthily optimistic attitude at least.

suggest we use the opportunity to vote in some tracks not available on cd. can anyone list them all?

know we have original version of ceremony, temptation 7" mix, MTO, MTO minus beats (or whatever it was called) doubt they could include run2, but what else is there?

Have to agree with Marty - sod another Best of and subsequent Rest of - can't we do a box set similar to the JD one - i.e just about everything they've ever recorded and released plus a CD of rarities?

Well here's my CD - not what people would necessarily expect, but then again, who ever expected the expected from New Order ?

Ceremony (Original 7" Gold sleeve best ever version) Chosen Time (Movement version, complete with bleepy bits) Temptation (Original 12" version) Leave Me Alone (PCL version) Lonesome Tonight Skullcrusher (Salvation soundtrack) Sooner Than You Think (Low Life version) Perfect Kiss (12" version) BLT (Brotherhood version) Dream Attack (Technique version) Regret (Fire Island mix or Republic version) Brutal Crystal (single version) Someone Like You (Dresden/Gabriel vocal mix) Here To Stay (full length version)

Unsure about all of this: half of me is with The Martian in that fuck-me-how-many-times-can-they-repackage-the-same-shit-and-its-only-us-devoted-gimps-who'll-buy-it-anyway-so-for-God's-sake-give-us-Recycle-instead.

The other part of me wants a decent "Best of..." (can we have an interesting title, pur-lease!!!) to replace that insipid abomination with the blue question mark.

D'ya think they'll re-release "BM" AGAIN to promote it??????

The problem these days is that you can actually do a best of yourself if you have a CD burner, so to me, this is not a major interest...

I would prefer the boxset, but that is still on the line I think, unless that best-of what actually what they were thinking.

Sure it's the time to ask for the 7" version of Temptation, but still, I would prefer "Temptation 98" from the 316 DVD...!!

Will be a tough thing to do! list those songs!

depends who they are aiming at - if its newbies - well then there are best ofs out there & there wont be much change, blue monday, blt, temtaion etc.

but as they are asking for our input then lets get some rare stuff on there, & the decent versions to boot!

the track given to select for that prize compilation would be another one to be included.

 part of me is with Marty on this one, too. a large part of me. and part of me also says that in this day and age, it's so ridiculously EASY to make your own custom "best of" collection that the notion of such a thing seems ridiculous...but the thing is, who's the "best of" comp for? it's not aimed at us. it's not aimed at people who likely have most everything they want that's been released previously, and/or are on their way to getting it, and/or care enough to hunt such things down. such collections are aimed at casual listeners.

hence, why the argument i made yesterday (and deleted, cos i realised i hadn't thought it through very well) doesn't work...the idea that imports are a lot easier to find these days, so if a "best of" hasn't been released in your country properly, it's not that difficult to get hold of. again, casual fans aren't going to go to that length...or want to plunk down that money. so in that sense, it does indeed make sense that someone would want to put together a domestic "best of"...perhaps for the purpose of hooking new fans in moreso than anything else...? :skeptic:

i agree. for people such as ourselves, we really do just need to have Recycle already. the concept is a lovely one, especially since some things are really difficult and/or very expensive to find. plus, the portability of CDs is a lovely thing. ;)

so i'd personally take this as, what would *i* put on a CD to try and hook new fans in? what would *i* put on a CD in order to make an otherwise casual fan go "my GOD, that's the coolest thing i've ever heard! i must have more!"

and part of me says "to hell with it, ANOTHER stupid 'best of' comp to litter the shelves...?" :nonono:

the battle rages on.

i also think a rarities c.d would be the best idea probably wouldnt be a big seller though all the sameit would be nice to get the original temptation on cd

Hey Nic,

I have to agree with most people here. So how about asking this guy who this CD is aimed at. Because if it is a best of CD that I have everything of already on a cd then I'm not going to buy it. It will have to have something I don't have. And if you look at how New Order do in the charts these days, you can tell only the New Order fans are buying the CD's, that is why HTS was 15 the first week and 43 the second week. Because all the fans bought the cd and then there was nobody left to buy the cd, so it fell. So I think they should aim this cd at the fans because we are going to buy it.I just don't think the newbies will rush out and get it, at least that is what the charts point to.

So I'm going to request a rare track listings, even if it's going to risk me the chance of winning the DVD which is most likely Region 2 anyways

Put it this way, back in 1999 I already compiled my own SEQUEL to "SUBSTANCE 1987" - which I managed to fortunately burn on to CD LAST YEAR when I finally got the equipment to do so. I even designed a new CD artwork booklet and everything - thus an ultra-rare NO fan artefact was created!!

The track listing basically picked up where the first version left off - with 12" versions of the originals wherever possible (and the bonus of a few B-sides to pad it out a bit):

  1. Touched By The Hand of God (12" original)
  2. Let's Go (vocal mix that came out in 1995 - sorry, I know lots of you hate that one)
  3. Fine Time (4.42 version)
  4. Round & Round (6.59 version)
  5. Best & Marsh (12" full length)
  6. Run2* (12" extended version) * though I had to suffice with the "Technique" album version as the 12" was never released on CD!
  7. World In Motion (original 12" 4.32 version - sorry Shug)
  8. Regret (album version - that's the perfect one for me)
  9. Ruined In A Day (K-Klass 6.22 mix)
  10. World (Price Of Love) (Perfecto 12" mix)
  11. Everyone Everywhere (album track version)
  12. Spooky (Fluke 12" mix)
  13. Nineteen63 (Arthur Baker 1995 - 5.02 version)

Actually, my finished copy opens with "True Faith - 94" cause I thought it was better to open and close it with revamped versions of the finest double a-side of New Order's career - albeit the version of 1963 was the equally good "guitar" remix by Arthur Baker.

Now, who else out there agrees with my idea of a "Substance 2"?

Not exactly a "Best of" though is it ? More of a "Hidden gems". Good selection though !

Some leftfield picks there, Bagpipes! I thought I was the only Skullcrusher fan in the known universe...

I'm opposed to the idea of a collection of rarities, for.. well, selfish reasons. I like the idea of having to hunt down obscure compilations and the like to own the really rare fare. Of course today you can burn yourself copies from others, but there's nothing like owning an original issue.

Everyone will have widely varying ideal tracklistings of course. But with Substance, (the Best Of) and the possibility of Recycle, why bother?

Only joking, I love the track, have done since it's early vocal incarnations in 84.

A vote for everyone everywhere makes you aces in my book, Martin, even if you haven't started room 101 yet.

And to what Janaki said about the best of not being for us, I agree, except for me. The only NewOrder I own is the Blade soundtrack.;)

Okay, forget about Ruined In A Day then... (two times 11)

There was a fair amount of internal debate about this and the "Recycle" project.

The first I heard was about a 4 months ago from a similar source to that of Nics. At that time I have no doubt it was purely discussion and no more than that so it remains to be seen how far Warners go this time. The proposed release is a fairly transparent attempt to cash in on the bands recent "success" and even I have to see that for what it truly is...

The "Recycle" thing was shelved then restarted then shelved then restarted etc. about 5 times when I (along with many others) lost interest in the whole affair, I do know that artwork exists for "Recycle" - beyond the logo alone that is - so I'm sure that it WILL eventually see the light of day.

The information Nic has conflicts with suggestions at this end but that means nothing and I for one hope that is DOES happen.

i don't think we need a best of. i think we should have a rarities collection...cuz i'd rather hear something old that i've never heard before instead of rehashing all the old stuff with a new package

Personally I think its a shite idea. Though it would be nice to have the original 12" versions of Ceremony and Temptation widely available on CD. We could also do without anymore 'weak' re-recorded versions a la Temptation and Confusion from Substance.

For what its worth and given that it would have to be quite commercial this would be my selection:

Ceremony (Original 12") Chosen Time Procession Temptation (Original 12") Blue Monday (Original 12") Your Silent Face Confused Instrumental Thieves Like Us Instrumental The Perfect Kiss (12" version) Bizarre Love Triangle (12" version) Don't Do It Vanishing Point Regret (Fire Island Mix) Crystal (Radio Edit) Here To Stay (Felix Da Housecat Mix)

My 15 Tracks:

Ceremony Leave Me Alone Temptation (original 12") Confusion (original 12") Thieves Like Us Perfect Kiss (12") This Time of Night BLT (12") True Faith (94 Perfecto Remix 12") Run Vanishing Point (making out Mix) Dream Attack Regret Ruined in a Day Crystal (12")

I'm sorry, but I don't see this happening, I mean come on, cancelled projects (RECYCLE), and delayed releases of singles and albums.

LONDON RECORDS are CRAP, awful promotion of New Order, please go to another record label, like FACTORY 2!

Or they could always start a new one of their own called simply

A single album with "the best of" New Order is quite impossible. They already have Substance, this one should be, IMHO, Substance Part 2... 1988-2002

So,

  1. Touched by the Hand of God
  2. Blue Monday 88
  3. Fine Time
  4. Round & Round
  5. Run2
  6. World In Motion
  7. Regret
  8. Ruined in a Day
  9. World
  10. Spooky
  11. True Faith 94
  12. Nineteen63
  13. Blue Monday 95
  14. Crystal
  15. 60 Miles An Hour
  16. Here To Stay

But, who would want this? Newbies maybe, but they are asking "die hard fans" what they want on that CD. The previous tracklisting, most of those are on the last "best of", so why bother?

Of course they won't put any Peel tracks, or Lamacq tracks because those rights belong to Strange Fruit, not to London, but that would be nice.

So the tracklisting I would sure like to see would be.

  1. Temptation (1998 re-recorded version)
  2. Brutal
  3. Here To Stay
  4. 60 Miles An Hour (David Kahne Mix)
  5. Run 2 (Extended or not)
  6. Blue Monday 7" Edit (Rare Japanese Edit)
  7. True Faith (Morning Sun Edit)
  8. Nineteen63 (Athur Baker Remix)
  9. Elegia (Extended Version)
  10. Paradise (Remix)
  11. Temptation (7" Original Version)
  12. Touched by the Hand of God (Touched by the Hand of BIAS)
  13. Ode To Joy / Rocking Carol
  14. The Happy One (Full)
  15. Crystal (with Corvin Dalek!)
  16. Theme
  17. Homage
  18. Evil Dust
  19. Temptation (Something Wild Version)
  20. True Faith (Eschreamer Mix & Dub)
  21. World In Motion... (1996 Remix)
  22. Ceremony (First version without Gilian)
  23. MTO

Nobody would buy that but hard fans I think :D That's mostly the "rarest" of New Order is you want.. or what's not really available on an "album"..

Gee, this will be tougher than I tought.. the ideal tracklisting is the first one, but why would I want that ?!

Why reminds me.. those True Faith 2001 remixes should also be on there...

And the 1990 Confusion remixes!
