Don't worry I've got no intention of starting one of those horrendous 'Let's all download Rock The Shack and get it to Number 1' campaigns but I did notice this in this week's UK Top 200.
Seems people are still downloading it in decent quantities...

Why not? Cos it's normally the preserve of sad-sack fans promoting has-been bands. The only two examples of it being done succesfully that spring to my mind involve Marillion and The Alarm. Which says it all really.
Sure it could be done, it could be done quite easily, but do you think it's something the band would want to be party to? I doubt it.

that would be the obvious song, as it should then get a bit of airplay & would be good enough to snag a fair few more sales its self that way.
Also, can I download off HMV.co.uk (or whoever) from here in ROI but have the sale counted for the UK chart?
Why not Age of Consent? Seems like nearly everyone here agrees it's the ultimate should have been single. I mean, it's probably made it on to hundreds if not thousands of mixtapes over all these years. It can be any song right, not just a former single?

a) be impossible b) be a complete waste of time
Impossible. It would take about 20000 downloads in one week to get to number 1. I'm pretty confident in suggesting that New Order didnt sell 20000 tickets for the October Tour but anyway...
How many members are there on this board? Because that would be where the "campaign" would be focused. A fair few thousand, but how many people actually pay much attention to whats going on? Not a lot. You cna spam as many people as you want on MySpace but people arent going to download a song they already have a few times already.
The idiots on Morrissey Solo tried this with "life is a pigsty" got to 127 or something ridiculous.
b) what would it actually achieve? Nothing. In fact, if there was a campaign, i wouldnt download the song. I've already got it. In the unlikely event it got top 40, Ceremony would get played on Radio 1 on Sunday Afternoon, when NO ONE is listening.
But then again, if people are sad enough to follow this thing through, dont let me stop you.

This is something I was thinking about a few weeks ago when I heard that an artist could chart through downloads alone, without having a single on sale in the shops.
I was going to suggest everyone download True Faith in the first week of July to commemorate the 20th anniversary of its original release.

That's surely the reason it has got to 113. I had an arguement with someone the other day after watching the Mars advert , they refused blank that the song track was 24 years old when I told them

Hooky makes more money DJing for 1 hour than he'd likely make from an Itunes download hyped into number 1 one week then disappearing the next. Sure, NO are prone to milking things somewhat (International, Retro, Singles etc) but I don't see them compromising their integrity enough to get involved in or even condone something like this.
Leave it to the Marillion fans. NB despite being the biggest selling UK artsists of 1985 Marillion weren't invited to play at Live Aid. Not sure why I remember that useless piece of trivia

It could be possible if enough people do it. I remember a while ago - maybe 1998, I think - I belonged to a Smashing Pumpkins message board and a campaign to get their video for "33" played on the TRL coundown (remember when MTV still showed videos?) on March 17 for Billy Corgan's 33rd birthday was started. Enough people voted online on MTV's site and I do believe that the video got played.
Holy cow, I did NOT know that [about the Smashing Pumpkins '33' Billy Corgan bit. '33' is my fave SP song.]...

Oh yeah didn't clock that the Mars advert is the reason for Blue Monday's charting.
I mean, if somebody did start a 'Get NO in the charts' campaign, at least make it worthwhile and take the piss and do it for Video 586 or something...
I'm wondering, did Blue Monday chart before when Orgy did that cover of "Blue Monday" back in 1998? I know I heard that version first (and didn't think it was too bad) but then went to go look for the original, which I then thought was much better.
But then, at least over here, not that many people knew that song was a cover. I remember having a conversation with a kid in my 9th grade biology class who had that Orgy CD. It probably went something like this.
"Yo, you know that Blue Monday song is the the only good song on their album. But, you know it's a cover, right?"
"No, I didn't. Who's it by?"
"Some band called New Order. A British dance group. Kind of like the Cure."
"Haven't heard of either band."
