Sup guys, it's me, your favorite poster, back again.....
Can anyone tell me which NO compilation includes all remixes or alternate versions? I'm talking about the 95 1963, 94 True Faith, original Confusion, etc.....There has to be something like this out there...I don't want any album versions of songs or anything, just alternate versions.

I don't think any such compilation exists, although it should. I think Recycle, which was a project done by some people on this site, was an attempt at it.

that is called excerpts from recycle. recycle was to have been a whole lot bigger, bigger than retro, but it all got too much.

Which is a fucking massive pity - still sticks in the craw that we got such a half-baked piss-poor excuse for a box set.
John Mcready's selection - hmmmmm. Mike Pickering - can't argue with his involvement, but such a weird track selection - 1963 in the 'Club' section??!! As for Bobby Gillespie's live selection.... There's much better live recordings out there that could have been used. Elegia is almost silent, as is Fine Time. I used to have superb recordings on tape.
I've always thought the live disc on Retro was tossed together from a very limited number of recordings to choose from - as many of you know, a few of us were approached by certain people once the listing had been decided on to see if we had better audience copies than the band's soundboard tapes. There apparently wasn't scope to recommend better recordings of the same songs from different gigs - how I would have love to have done this!
As boxed sets go Retro isn't a necessairly a bad one but could have been better than what we got. To be fair it’s a good 'rough guide' and John McCready's selection would certainly educate someone about NO. More specifically NO were committed to recording WFTSC between 2002-05 and this and the time this took up probably diluted much of the original Rob Gretton's idea for 'Recycle'. Overall Retro is a bit of a missed opportunity as apart from a few extras - Theme From Best & Marsh, The Perfect Kiss live, Elegia extended version, live performances etc. it doesn't add too much to the 'singles' compilations which were out at the time. Maybe a boxed set all of their CD singles/remixes would have been better and if you haven't got Retro try and get the limited edition set's which contained the extra CD. Cheers!
