New Order have come up with many fantastic song titles in their time.

But my LEAST favourites would be:

Mesh Mr Disco Spooky As It Is When It Was

Does anyone else have any song titles that they think are poo? (I wonder if anyone mentions Dracula's Castles).:\ohwell:

90% of the WFTSC titles qualifies automatically.

Anything that a hundred other acts have used.

Has anyone noticed that if the album has a shit name, the sleeve tends to be shit and when you play it the music's not much better either?

I don't judge songs solely by their song titles, but I have no idea why "Angel Dust" is named that way.

I doubt the song's about drugs, so I don't know why they would name it as that.

Hmmm...

"Working Overtime" (They might have been listening to BTO when they came up with this one)

"Slow Jam" (Should have been "Slowly Jamming a Pen In Your Ear" or "Box Set Invader")

"Rock the Shack" (A neccisary imperfection in the New Order catologue could have used an entertainingly misleading title instead of a line repeated ad nauseum in the song)

"Every Little Counts" (Hate the song, hate the name)

"Who's Joe?" (Indeed. A solid track but the title is lame)

4/5 of these songs I don't care for though I feel time will vindicate "Rock the Shack"

We've been here before...

"Hey Now What You Doing" is poor.

Never have understood this title especially as it highlights the fact that 'Who's Joe' and 'Hey Now...' start off lyrically almost identical.

Belting tracks though.

Probably clouded by the fact i hate the song...

Too many shit titles to count really. :nonono:

Most of the above nominations get my vote too. "Hey Now What You Doing" is so piss poor Oasis-rip off it's untrue. I already long gave it an alternative title: "Juggernaut" cos it sounds like the sort of perfect song you should drive a juggernaut along to, which suddenly makes it a lot better IMO. :shades:

Is it a coincidence that most of the dud titles have come post-Gretton?

Can't help but think "Rock the Shack" was suggested by Bobby Gillespie. Remember reading a GR album review on an Underworld site and as a band with a similar pedigree in song titles, they were disturbed to think "Rock the Shack" could ever be a NO track.

I think the most embarrassing title by far is 60 Miles An Hour - it makes me cringe just to think about it. For a song that's supposed to be about living on the edge, 60 MPH is a speed your gran would drive. It would have been so easy to make it 90 or even 100, which would have given the song the dangerous edge I think Barney was angling for. Even though it's a good tune and had one of the better-looking videos they've ever released I just can't listen to it soley for the title.

Working Overtime and Rock The Shack are terrible names (and a crap songs), but not as embarrassingly off the mark as 60MPH.

New Order writing a song about drugs, that would be weird indeed :nonono:

I tend to find the titles I don't like are the ones that a mentioned in the lyrics.

If you were driving at 60mph in a residential 20mph, or say outside a school, then it really would be both a dangerous and stupid thing to do.

I think the same, although I like to imagine that it's supposed to be ironic in order to excuse them.

The promo, where a teddy is 'cruelly' tied to the bumper of the 'speeding' truck would tend to bear me out (see what I did there?).

I'll be there for you when you want me to...

...in the dead of night it will be alright...

...I'll drive at 60 miles an hour!

I think it's a song telling someone to fcuk off and leave them alone.

So if they put 'in a 20 zone' in brackets after so it would read...60mph (in a 20 zone) it would have been better?

They may have thought about it,but decided against it because it would have been an even more spackerish title..Who knows for sure

Yeah, because most rock bands would write a song about driving through a school zone. *eyeroll*

Or 60 MPH in the wrong lane. That would be pretty dangerous.

I agree with most the other nominations here but not Mr Disco! I think cheesy is the idea. Mr Disco is a cheesy guy who thought he had something going with this chick (bird) and, loser that he is, she ditched him and he never saw her again. I picture Herb from WKRP in Cincinnati.

Considering Barney's got kids of varying ages(one of which is only now just in primary school, I think, don't quote me)he's probably just acting more like a mellowed out guy from the burbs like some of us who also have kids. Anyway, back on topic;

Every little counts(I know it's a Lou Reed pisstake but it's still a pisspoor song/title).

Mesh

The Him

Spooky

Slow Jam(nice song, crap title...they couldn't be arsed thinking of a better one I'd say).

I always got a kick out of this title as the song sounds like it belongs on a real cheesy XXX porn, with probably the same title.

Quality of song titles started going downhill at the same time as the quality of songs, pretty much... Up to Republic, there's not one naff one imo, Republic has a few (Liar, Times Change, Special), GR loads (Slow Jam, RTS, 60 MPH, Close Range, Turn My Way, SLY) and WFTSC a fair few (HNWYD, Who's Joe, DC, ITYS)... Strangely enough for me the tracks I don't generally like that much... My favourite NO title is Love Vigilantes, so I suppose it's all coloured by whether I love, like or hate a track...

Of course it's about fucking drugs! The lyrics on this site are hopeless though - someone needs to clear their lugholes out!

I've always had the feeling that by and large they struggle with song titles. Some come naturally to them, others are a real struggle, and more often than not the final name isn't the one that they'd been working with throughout the song development.

"Hey Now What You Doing" was known as "Road To Ruin" until the album was finalised, it was even called this on the pre-release copies. Many of the Get Ready songs changed or swapped titles.

Even going back to the start though, song titles changed on a regular basis. "Atmosphere" was "Chance" until they changed it, there's a setlist where the name has been changed during the decision of what songs to play. "Incubation", "A Means To An End" and "Decades" were all called "Cross Of Iron" at some stage.

We all know why "Sooner Than You Think" got the title it did.....

I wonder if it is Warners pressure to make them have titles that are the same as lyrics within the songs?

They should just stop trying to come up with cool sounding titles. I mean, who gives a fcuk what a songs called anyway? At least their not pretentious enough to just call them track 1,2,3,3,5 etc.

What silly band/artist did that then?

Song titles have no basis for judgement though, because if the song is not good, it could still have the coolest song title in the world, but wouldn't be worth anything. I think the best NO songs have the best song titles.

I think for the main youre right. The best songs do have the best titles (Temptation, Ceremony, Regret, True Faith, etc). If they were called Grey Eyes, No Mercy Shown, Wounded Heart, Morning Sun then it wouldnt seem right but then we wouldnt know any different.

I was thinking of solely the worse song titles, trying to forget about the song itself and separating the two.
