what is the band's stance on bootlegs (and even net music)?

never hear much regarding it.

Throw in the towel is their stance nowadays I reckon.

They might not have lost their shirts on Blue Monday if people could have downloaded it instead of buying it hehe.

Bootlegs: live audio isn't a problem provided it is for private or non-profit making use. People who make recordings with the intention of selling them on aren't too popular. That said, Bernard is less happy about live recordings than the rest of the band, apparently. Hooky loves his live stuff!

At the time of Retro, the band approached a few known tapers to see if they had better copies than the band.

They've gone on record before as saying they were interested in the internet as a sales medium, and that legal downloads were something they could be exploring in the future. This was before everyone else was doing it!

Can you blame him? Everyone says that he's an awful singer live. Bootlegs will only backup their claim. Barney, Barney, Barney, I still like you no matter what .

Depends on how drunk he is. Taras is early and that's really compelling overall (sans 'Ceremony'). So is the live stuff from '93. The live vids on youtube from '84-'85 seem to catch him quite pissed and irritated with everything, so his pitch is kind of shot. Agitation and alcohol really fuck up the voice.

I remember Barney was asked in an online interview what he thought about downloading music:

"If it means I can't put food on the table for my family, then no, I dont agree with it"

Something like that.

from what i have read/heard......hooky loves most bootlegs... he has a lot of iggy pop ones himself...and he has a lot of joy division ones as well... barney is too self obsessed about quality ,his voice/song writing/performance...etc...i think maybe he should accept people see live recordings in a completely different way than himself . Most bootlegs are only purchased after a fan has already got every availble recording a band makes (peter hook made this statement ) i own about 6 on vinyl/cd...more on tape...and have never sold for profit to anyone....the internet is a great way of hearing more live recordings...but make sure you own the original recording and pay the band(any band) their fair dues...for all their hard work.......still ...im not sure what stephen (he says hes not a bitter man...must be a softy lager drinker then)and gillian think of bootlegs?

There's bootlegs and there's bootlegs. Those that get sold for profit at shops and those being traded for free. I do love it that every single professionaly made boot I've seen claims copyright.

Didn't I hear a story about Hooky getting upset at seeing that Warsaw boot in a shop.
