Have just heard of unconfirmed reports that Bernard has announced N.O. have split. Can someone look into this & confirm.Just thought I'd post & let you know

We've known about it for quite some time now, the reports coming back from Brazil and Argentina were grim, and Hooky did say last week that it was all over this time, there would be no more. A pity, but it was bound to happen sometime.

There's still the next, improved Greatest Hits album and the long awaited release of Blue Monday 08 to look forward to, though...

Who can I blame for this? Mick Gee?

Here is the whole interview with Hooky. Needs Windows Media Player. The NME news is copied from Xfm. :D

XFM is quite close to NME, of course they share news texts... "But it’s like the boy who cried wolf this time" This is an interesting phrase... it can mean two things: 1 "This time nobody's going to believe we've really split" 2 "But if we get a good offer we may play some festival" Anyway, what's he doing with Farrell, didn't he have Freebass to keep him busy? If this split is really permanent of course I'm sorry, but when band members get older than 50 it just has to happen sooner or later, unless you're Steely Dan and can still do your best music ever (actually they do take their time between an album and the follower, and actually WFTSC was one of New Order's best albums ever)... it's just us all growing older, we can do nothing to stop this... the fact it's 20 years since True Faith is simply frightening itself... Now we can still look forward to those unreleased tracks from the WFTSC sessions, to whatever Hooky will do, hoping that Bernard will still do something too, I can't see him retiring, while I'm afraid that, with Gillian at home, an Other Two reunion is quite unlikely, looks more like Steve will stay at home too, though I can see him getting involved in the odd production job once in a while...

well - im going out on the hoy now on me tod. Bastard:(

I don't see it permanent until either Hooky or Bernard come to their unfortunate demise. Until then its a wait and see game.

At least I'll get a decent price now if I decide to flog off all my New Order stuff...!

Looks like its been on the cards for a bit. I wonder if better choices of singles from WFTSC could have changed things? WFTSC wasnt as successful as previous albums and in my opinion 2 of the 3 singles reflected the weaker side of the album

It's not as if its the first time they have split, maybe it is the last time. I can really only hope at this point they 'tie up the loose ends' and put out the leftover songs from WFTSC as a coda, and maybe come back in a while.

I know we've been here before & I didn't want to start another thread about old news, but I was in a rush when I posted it,so let me clarify. It was secondhand information from a non-N.O. fan who was scanning his mp3 radio & heard that Bernard had announced that they were no more. That's it,pure & simple,so just posted it quick to see if anyone could delve a bit deeper or had heard anything themselves, maybe Tim or Spotnick using their in-the-know contacts to shed some light. Let's face it,we know it's coming,& the relationship between Hooky & Barney seems to be strained to say the least( I've never heard Hooky quite this despondant before),& a lot of us don't want them to become a doddering, pathetic O.A.P. embarrassment that is The Creaking Bones. So maybe this is the best way to bow out:shrug:

I'm still fookin' choked mind:cry: :(

It's been there or thereabouts for some time, I must admit I was ever so slightly taken aback when Hooky told me last week that yes this time it was the end, I guess I'd always believed the day would never come. Eternal optimist me, it'll come good again one day.

Do you really believe the last ever concert from New Order will be in Buenos Aires :skeptic:

Gee, if they really want to stop doing that, they need a farewell gig in Manchester.

well, this is realy sad. I've never seen New Order live and it seems that I'll never see. :(

Yeah, thanks guys, blurt it out on an indie radio station interview in such a matter-of-fact way. Believe it or not NO does still matter to some of us, even if not all of NO themselves.

Spotnick wrote: Gee, if they really want to stop doing that, they need a farewell gig in Manchester.

How many bands do 'farewell' gigs in their home towns then?! :skeptic:

In fact, how many bands do 'farewell' gigs at all? Most just split with the minimum of fuss, bar the manufactured likes of boy bands, or what-have-you.

Think it's been mentioned enough times here already though. They were lined up for Manc as part of that new festival in June/July. And turned it down.

I dunno, maybe all the fuss about 'Control' will bring 'em back together? Who's to say?!

And then one last gig in London, natch: home of the hardcore!

Not this year though, got too many other things on the go. :evil4:

Still, no use crying over split milk. It was fun while it lasted. Had to happen one day.. .

i waited for 12 years for the who to reform and play a gig and actually see them and it happened, and for over 20 years for them to release new material.. But it happened, and i think that the same will continue to happen for NO. Keep the faith

It's sad, but expected: they're getting on, chances are Hooky and Barney are not quite as close as they once were, WFTSC didn't do so great, and I haven't been invited to roadie for them. Of course it was going to end badly :nervous:

Whatever happens, we've got thirty years of great music to remember them by.

But I hope it's just temporary :thumb:

With these guys, you never know! New Order or should I say Sumner and Hook have always had a love/hate relationship going back 20 plus years. It's one of the things that probably made them who they are. Are they over for now? Yes and will be probably for a while, but permanently? I don't think so. Like someone posted earlier, unless one of them kicks the bucket there is always a chance. New Order is their blood. They just need a break. Everyone one does now and then.:thumb:

As he said himself, it's like the boy that cried wolf. We've heard this several times before so it's difficult to know whether this time it really is 'it' or not. I was at Reading in 93 and it definitely felt final then...only for them to come back together - with Gretton's encouragement - in 98.

Given that Hooky could hardly have made a formal announcement in what was a light-hearted conversation with a friend on that XFM thing, he did seem a bit casual. His MySpace blog refers to the royal 'we' too so he regards himself as part of a something i.e the Order and probably always will do.

If it is true - and I'd still like some sort of official announcement rather than a Police-style drifting apart even though I'm rather hoping against hope! - all I can say is that yes, I will be sad because they've been my musical passion for so long. I count myself indeed lucky to see them live as many times as I did for they were magic and we shall see their like no more.

Ps I was listening to that live boot of Reading 98 the other day and, after Barney told the crowd that everyone could have a drink on them and later said he was joking, Hooky replied that he'd "alienated the audience now, Barn". Barn didn't reply!

it would've been great if they'd have done that manchester gig as a farewell, they still mean a lot to a lot of people don't they, but they.ve done it in typical new order style haven't they! wouldn't mind knowing what happened in brazil though?

Very VERY disappointed if true :(

Does this just mean that Barney is pissed that Peter has another band without him in it? It's kind of exhausting the way this topic pops up every six months or so...So I don't believe it.It usually takes them six years to put an album out, they will have broken up and re-formed 4 more times and no will have noticed.

Maybe there should be a small corner bug or something on the front page of this site that says New Order : Broken Up/Together depending on what the current story is, but I think it would be to much for the web site admin to keep up with....

NOOO!!! They'd better come back together, I can't die not going to a New Order concert!

Im not getting my hopes up. There was a lot more demand for the band back in 1998 and they were just still young enough to not be considered ´old/past it´ by the media at large. Radio One still used to play True Faith quite a lot, plus the side projects were very much ´on the scene´

Didnt Steve say something recently where he implied that their stock had fallen a lot in the last year? Now factor in a few years (from now) hiatus.... I really cant see them getting back together in their mid 50s. Sorry to be negative for those who have never seen the band live, its just what i think

It's a bit ironic they're splitting while Section 25 and ACR are coming back. Happy Mondays have come back. Durutti Column never went away, all was right for a Factory reunion year... Must tell Hooky to do at least a farewell concert in MCR with all these Factory bands, end the whole thing with him and Barney punching each other on stage and add it all to a new edition of the 24 Hr Party People DVD... ;) That would be a perfect way to end the story...

I for one am glad its happened. For me, the last album and singles plus a lot of 'Get Ready' was just 'going through the motions'.

In fact, to be plain - just crap.

I'd rather remember them as a(two) great band(s) who were an influence on myself and countless others than the sad, pedestrian thing they had become.

Good luck to Bernard, Peter, Gillian,Steven and thanks for the memories.

I find it funny that a lot of people on other forums are saying things like "the last two albums were mediocre anyway". LOL...so if GR and WFTSC were mediocre, what does that make Republic?

I personally think WFTSC is their best album since Substance.

On my way to work this morning, I actually listened to one of the radio stations here in Austin, and the DJ mentioned this article from NME...then the douche bag went on to say that he thought they had broken up in 93...then went on to show his utter lack of NOwledge when he said it must have just been Peter Hook and Bernard Sumner carrying on...guess that's a plastic Steve we've seen at all these gigs...

so if anyone wants to ask why New order don't do proper "tours" in the States, there is your perfect answer...we just aren't smart enough to get it...

I heard that hooky and bernard were getting together with a drum machine for a quick reunion for the american idol finale. Heard steve say that he would only drum is sanjia was singing and due to him being recently kicked off the program, steve is not playing in protest. hooky and bernard tried to persuade him, but he was steadfast in his love for sanjia and stated it was due to those "warmongering yanks!" that he was kicked off. gillian was noted that she was not happy with steve's stance stating that he "is only trying to loaf around while i clean the dishes and wash his dirty drawers, he needs to get a job". Hooky persuaded barney to stay, since hooky always wanted to be infront of a large audience. The drum machine chosen was the alesis sr16, since it was "affordable" due to the lack of sales of WFTSC.

But don't blame me if they don't show....I got my word from a homeless guy with a sign asking for beer:shrug:

Wonder whats gonna happen about Control and all that, will they reform under the joy division banner for that?

Well, I hope its not true on the split. Hope they are just taking a break and will do another album in a year or 2. Its been 27 years together plus more if you count Joy Division. They have been together too long to say we have split up for good. I won't believe that. I believed that the first time around in 2001 and found them together again. I was the happiest person alive when they got back together. Could not see them in concert because I moved to the wrong state. The 80's and 90's was living in southern california and every concert they played there, I was there.

Never say never!!!

all bands split one day. ...For me no more NO album and no more live set to see will be, obviously,a real lack. Something like a "page tournée" ( a back page? I'm not sure with my translation:\ohwell: ). But what can we hope today ? They are middle aged men in a world ( the rock music world) where most of the bands are twenty/Thrirty years old... They have done their best, and their time is probably now gone for rock music...How can we ask them to be creative any longer, and interested in doing live sets???? Hooky seems to be bored by this "split"- or seems to be the most bored by the idea. But, well, did Barney say something about this ?And Hooky, as we all know, speaks a lot...C'est un bavard. Too much, maybe?

as they walked off stage in 93 i realy thought that was it and realy itwas ,,, the end of phase 1 of there career,, they made great music ,,played some ace stuff live off the cuff maybe well do an encore maybe we wont,,

and had a good time. made little money as it all got sucked into the hac and factory,

phase 2 starts in 98 with the gigs and the comeback gig to end em all at reading,, gillian leaves (what happenend to the brotherhood, if one member leaves we will change our name etc)

they played well live with good sound,, albums were o.k. some tracks subliminally good.

they made money.. end off.

phase 3  new order will never let you down again,, alan wise 98 what the fuck does he know?

get ready

After the last date of the last tour there was a "No We are not breaking up" To which I thought "Riggghhhhhht-they are"

In 1993, it was a result of too many drugs too much stress from The Hac and factory imploding plus an insane sense of burnout-they had not been together since Bernard's intention to form Electronic.

New Order has always been about Steve and Gillian's relationship along with the Barney-Hooky dynamic. Those two guys seem the ultimate love-hate deal. It is what made them creative but cause them to blow apart. That and well the two post-reformation albums did not sell all that great and were not really all that memorable.

I have heard that being in a band is like all the stress of being in a relationship without any of the sex or sexual release. Rob Gretton called them on the carpet back in 1998 and said if you devoted any of the energy to New Order that you devoted to your side projects, you would have been bigger than U2.

Ironic actually-Happy Mondays are back together. Same with ACR and well Vini Reilly is still floating somewhere. All the other main line Factory backs are getting back together.

"Control" is set to bow at Cannes May 17 and this year is the 30th anniversary of JD. I saw in "Q" or somewhat that their entire catalog is being digitally remastered!! This should be a moment of great triumph.

I figure it is a breakup like 1993-no big announcement-just a drifting apart. Just do us a favor Barney, say your side of it-a definitive statement so we can all go on.

I guess I can obsess over Doves or the new Megadeth cd or Rufus Wainwright's new one (my tastes are wide ranging) Just it won't be the same.

I believe "never say never". Sure not a good atmosphere between Barney & Hooky, but it's taken them years to start playing Joy Division songs together again. I can't see them wanting to share their joy of playing, with other artists. Hooky will have Freebass and possibly even Monaco again,Barney and his Alex James collab, but in then end of the day,the only artists who can play Joy Division is................err............JOY DIVISION.

Much ado About Nothing, I think.

This is all from one flippant comment from Hook, who always makes flippant comments.

Either way, what does it matter if they're 'officialy' together or split? They can be together as a group and not do anything for years or be split and decide to do something again at a moment's notice.

So what does it matter?

I hope they release more new stuff though. Get Ready was quite good and WFTSC is EXCELLENT. By any standard they're still putting out good material. Moaning about how they're not breaking new ground and achieving blockbuster sales is just....

Boo hoo. "I’d rather have a bottle in front of me than a past history of lobotomy" so said some rabid fan.

What New Order have done will always stand eternal. We need no more, not now anyway. A noted historian recently commented on how multitalented people in this modern, present day era are. We are equally musicians, artist, writers, parents, philosophers, inventors, chefs, environmentalists, pet rescuers, athletes, kids, educators, directors, administrators, and then some. Why would we ever limit ourselves and than require and/or demand some same definitive direction from them? Are they not they the best judge for themselves? I would hope I never see the day they rise to their level of complete incompetence as gifted musicians. Good night, good luck, good bye.

Not NO. Everything they've done is brilliant. There's no odoferous music anywhere in NO's repertoire.

Look, this is what reasonable people would do: Announce you are splitting up BUT before hanging everything up, you are going to go an tour the 5 or 6 most important cities in the WOrld as a farewell to the fans. That's what my fave band did in 1997, Soda Stereo and I will always be thankful for that. I spent $1,000 to see them in one of the 5 cities they played on their last tour. NO could play Manchester, Tokyo, New York, Madrid, Paris and Rio and get paid a million dollars a show and call it quits. Come on Tony Wilson, you can make it happen. Let's not leave this legacy behind without a big arse BANG!!! And they could play 2 hours of JD music and NO music and Electronic music and Monaco and etc, etc.

Shite, I hate it. I hate when good bands break up. Why can Oasis do this? Blur, Stone Roses, The Smiths and now NO. Fucking aye.

...well, it had to come, the ship has landed...* *lyric from 'Someone Like You', 2001

I guess I have to come to grips with the reality that, this IS the end. And I never even got to see them live. It's a sad thing, really.

This was the band that set up the soundtrack to my everyday life. The band I fell in love with, musically. The band whose drummer I had a hilarious childhood crush on. The band with an awesome tough punk chick for a guitarist/keyboardist. The band with an interestingly dark past, whose music from their past strong enough to revive me in my darkest hour [when I almost actually killed myself]. The band that taught me how the fuck to dance like it's nobody else's business but mine [no attending the Bernard Sumner/Ian Curtis School of Dance necessary]. The band that brought me the most glorious 9 minutes of dancing imaginable [not to mention the best video ever for that song]. The band that didn't give a fuck. The band with a very odd sense of humor. The band whose lead singer, in 1981, pioneered the horizontal guitar-playing position. The band that had Gillian hang out in a tub with a nekkid Tony Wilson. The band that...

...well, the band that brought life to my otherwise silent life.

To the 6 [yes, I'm counting Ian in also] greatest people that ever walked the earth, thank you for the music. Thank you for the laughter. Thank you for the soundtrack to my life.

Thank you.

...I guess I've finally come to terms with the end. But, as long as there are still the memories and the music, there will never truly be an end to the glorious Order...

:skeptic: I'm NOT worshipping ANY idol whatsoever. I'd rather be my poetic-twat self than trying to be emotionless. If you wanna see this as idol-worship, fine. But you don't know what?* I'm not gonna jump into my belief system--you can read the poem picture I posted in my profile. That should clarify things for you.

I was only stating [in the best way I can] how important the Order was to me since my childhood. They're not God, but they were just as cool.

'Nuff said, end of. :nono: Now open your mind for once.

*quote from a former manager from my workplace. he used to say that. A LOT.

A million dollars a show?!

If they could command that sorta fee they probably wouldn't be splitting up!!

Er, don't see Londinium on the list either! :skeptic:

(And how many fans do you think New Order have in any of those cities, bar Manchester?!)

Call me a ridiculous fool if you like, but I'm not going to be fully convinced about this unless the remaining three members actually confirm this. :read:

No no I don't want confirmation. I'll just go on believing they are taking a break.

I know what you mean though.

I admit I truly don't want them to break up. But only one member of the band (we all know who) says something of the like, and it seems that everyone on here is acting like it's already been confirmed by everyone in the band.

I would rather them take a break, than break-up for good.

Now he has a MySpace page (and he, or someone for him, is regularly logging in) he might take a minute to post on the blog to put a final word to the speculations... but maybe this is how he likes it, adds to the myth... Any rumours about the reasons behind the split? Tim, what did he tell you exactly? If you think you can refer of course... He told you it's over and this is what makes me believe it, but has he told you why? This isn't the year it was meant to happen, with Control, 30th anniversary etc. I would have understood next year, but them splitting now makes me think something wrong has happened... And why is Bernard so damn silent? What is he doing now? I've heard something with Alex James? What exactly, a new band? Jack, anything you can explain? Thanks.
