It's sad, but expected: they're getting on, chances are Hooky and Barney are not quite as close as they once were, WFTSC didn't do so great, and I haven't been invited to roadie for them. Of course it was going to end badly :nervous:

Whatever happens, we've got thirty years of great music to remember them by.

But I hope it's just temporary :thumb:

With these guys, you never know! New Order or should I say Sumner and Hook have always had a love/hate relationship going back 20 plus years. It's one of the things that probably made them who they are. Are they over for now? Yes and will be probably for a while, but permanently? I don't think so. Like someone posted earlier, unless one of them kicks the bucket there is always a chance. New Order is their blood. They just need a break. Everyone one does now and then.:thumb:

So long and thanks for all the fish... now i know that the perfect kiss is the kiss of death...

Don't think i really want to see them getting on to stage with the aid of a stairlift so it's for the best, really.

As he said himself, it's like the boy that cried wolf. We've heard this several times before so it's difficult to know whether this time it really is 'it' or not. I was at Reading in 93 and it definitely felt final then...only for them to come back together - with Gretton's encouragement - in 98.

Given that Hooky could hardly have made a formal announcement in what was a light-hearted conversation with a friend on that XFM thing, he did seem a bit casual. His MySpace blog refers to the royal 'we' too so he regards himself as part of a something i.e the Order and probably always will do.

If it is true - and I'd still like some sort of official announcement rather than a Police-style drifting apart even though I'm rather hoping against hope! - all I can say is that yes, I will be sad because they've been my musical passion for so long. I count myself indeed lucky to see them live as many times as I did for they were magic and we shall see their like no more.

Ps I was listening to that live boot of Reading 98 the other day and, after Barney told the crowd that everyone could have a drink on them and later said he was joking, Hooky replied that he'd "alienated the audience now, Barn". Barn didn't reply!

it would've been great if they'd have done that manchester gig as a farewell, they still mean a lot to a lot of people don't they, but they.ve done it in typical new order style haven't they! wouldn't mind knowing what happened in brazil though?

Very VERY disappointed if true :(

Does this just mean that Barney is pissed that Peter has another band without him in it? It's kind of exhausting the way this topic pops up every six months or so...So I don't believe it.It usually takes them six years to put an album out, they will have broken up and re-formed 4 more times and no will have noticed.

Maybe there should be a small corner bug or something on the front page of this site that says New Order : Broken Up/Together depending on what the current story is, but I think it would be to much for the web site admin to keep up with....

NOOO!!! They'd better come back together, I can't die not going to a New Order concert!

Im not getting my hopes up. There was a lot more demand for the band back in 1998 and they were just still young enough to not be considered ´old/past it´ by the media at large. Radio One still used to play True Faith quite a lot, plus the side projects were very much ´on the scene´

Didnt Steve say something recently where he implied that their stock had fallen a lot in the last year? Now factor in a few years (from now) hiatus.... I really cant see them getting back together in their mid 50s. Sorry to be negative for those who have never seen the band live, its just what i think

It's a bit ironic they're splitting while Section 25 and ACR are coming back. Happy Mondays have come back. Durutti Column never went away, all was right for a Factory reunion year... Must tell Hooky to do at least a farewell concert in MCR with all these Factory bands, end the whole thing with him and Barney punching each other on stage and add it all to a new edition of the 24 Hr Party People DVD... ;) That would be a perfect way to end the story...

I just had a crazy thought.

New Order is over, but Joy Division is coming back

You're right! It's just a way to get rid of Phil! :evil4:

Maybe they just decided to change the name of the band again :evil4:

Maybe the split is some sorts of subconcious form of promoting Control? This way there will be more fuzz about the band and the movie.

I for one am glad its happened. For me, the last album and singles plus a lot of 'Get Ready' was just 'going through the motions'.

In fact, to be plain - just crap.

I'd rather remember them as a(two) great band(s) who were an influence on myself and countless others than the sad, pedestrian thing they had become.

Good luck to Bernard, Peter, Gillian,Steven and thanks for the memories.

:rip: for the band.

Thank god for that!!

About bloody time too, I say! After all the years of will they or won't they? speculation it's a relief to finally put the old dog out of its misery! :evil4:  :shades:

I find it funny that a lot of people on other forums are saying things like "the last two albums were mediocre anyway". LOL...so if GR and WFTSC were mediocre, what does that make Republic?

I personally think WFTSC is their best album since Substance.

Their last great album was Technique - they've been treading water ever since frankly. :shades:

On my way to work this morning, I actually listened to one of the radio stations here in Austin, and the DJ mentioned this article from NME...then the douche bag went on to say that he thought they had broken up in 93...then went on to show his utter lack of NOwledge when he said it must have just been Peter Hook and Bernard Sumner carrying on...guess that's a plastic Steve we've seen at all these gigs...

so if anyone wants to ask why New order don't do proper "tours" in the States, there is your perfect answer...we just aren't smart enough to get it...

Yeah, they've released absolutely nothing of worth since 1989. :skeptic:

Bollocks and you know it.

Some people moan for the sake of moaning.

Tis incredibly boring

I heard that hooky and bernard were getting together with a drum machine for a quick reunion for the american idol finale. Heard steve say that he would only drum is sanjia was singing and due to him being recently kicked off the program, steve is not playing in protest. hooky and bernard tried to persuade him, but he was steadfast in his love for sanjia and stated it was due to those "warmongering yanks!" that he was kicked off. gillian was noted that she was not happy with steve's stance stating that he "is only trying to loaf around while i clean the dishes and wash his dirty drawers, he needs to get a job". Hooky persuaded barney to stay, since hooky always wanted to be infront of a large audience. The drum machine chosen was the alesis sr16, since it was "affordable" due to the lack of sales of WFTSC.

But don't blame me if they don't show....I got my word from a homeless guy with a sign asking for beer:shrug:

and that was Austin, where the music culture is 100X more knowledgable than any other city in the state. no wonder they decided to only play shows in CA, NY & IL. who can blame them?
