I just playlisted these songs
Seem to make a pretty good album 
But I'vbe never realy been able to get into "Movement" all that much...a few tracks are a bit OTT in trying to sound like Joy Division I think
Anyone else think so?
So New Order would've had to wait 'til 1983 before they released anything?!
Power, Corruption & Lies would've come out before you could complete that little lot too! (Confusion was summer of 83)
Yup, you'd have to knock off Confusion and Blue Monday, and you are also missing Cries and Whispers.
A better album than Movement,i reckon, in answer to your question.
The deabte about whether tinkering with the tracklisting to Movement would improve it has been done before - certainly some of the non-album material from the very early 80s stands up better than much of Movement, but the real problem is the album's production (debated to death, again)... Btter produced Movement would be a decent first effort... Of course the songs listed would make a pretty fine release as well, but spanning 3 years, well it just doesn't quite work out... Movement was a necessary step, exorcising Ian's ghost in a way, realising that they had just about gone as far as they could with Hannett... Some of those great songs listed could only have happened because of Movement... Shame there's no Peel Session like versions of the other 4 tracks really...

Woops...I was just arranging them according to the tracklisting on "Singles" and "Substance"
I still think they're better paired off with the following tracks preceeding it:
Ceremony [either version will do] In a Lonely Place Procession [come on, that HAS to be on there] Cries and Whispers Mesh [though I've never even heard the song, I heard it's good though] *the entire FAC 051* Everything's Gone Green

I think "Movement" is a very good album... I love a lot of songs as "Dreams Never End", "Truth", "Chosen Time" or "Doubts Even Here". But I agree when the fellows say that non-album singles from the same period are much better, as "Ceremony" or "Everything's Gone Green", except "Procession", maybe...
in other words FACTUS 1981-1982, with Ceremony/IALP tagged on the end. Then yeah, much better.
I like Movement, although it isn't typical New Order it's an expected transition from Joy Division to techno. Ceremony should have at least made it on though.
Surely one of the oustanding things about New Order and Factory Records was that the singles were not on the albums - and later, when they were, the single mixes were very different.
At one end of the musical spectrum you had Michael Jackson and his label ripping off fans by releasing just about every track from Thriller as a single. At the other end New Order, treating fans with respect.
Unfortunately the post-Factory New Order and Warner Music don't hold us in the same regard.
To answer the thread's main question: yes.
Movement was the last New Order album I bought and for that reason probably suffered in my estimation. Everything I'd heard before (True Faith, Regret) just seemed so much better. Taken in context I can appreciate a few of Movement's songs but still think it's far from a strong album even with the muddy production concerns.
Truly great tunes? Nah. One or two good ones showing promise? Probably. Nothing on Movement blew me away as much as the later stuff did.
By comparison, I remember buying the FEP 313 Canadian CD in Dundee Virgin Megastore not long after becoming a fan and it still gets regular listens today. All the essential post-Ceremony early singles Temptation, Everything's Gone Green and Procession completely shine. Add the complete 12" of Hurt and Movement doesn't really stand a chance. Since there's less than 2 years between them surely they're allowed a direct comparison?
Even though it's 5 tracks versus 8, I'd pick the FEP any day

A couple of years ago, I burned up a collection of New Order CDRs for in-car use. The first of these discs runs like this:
FAC 33 (green sleeve)
I made these chronologically, but it strikes me that the first disc is very much pre-sequencers and less electronic overall (if you disregard Everything's Gone Green) whereas by the time you get to my second disc, it's all very different:
FAC 63 (7")
This second disc was really tight for space, so I could have slipped the 7 inch Temptation onto Disc One...but that just seemed plain wrong, somehow.
