I'm getting nagged by my friend to find "A Means To An End" as he says it's the best JD live recordings.

But is it okay to download it when I eventually find it on the net? :\ohwell:

Yeah, I'm pretty paranoid but I need to know for sure :lol:

If it's an actual bootleg, for which no mechanical copyright (beyond that which the taper is sharing with you), and you already own a publishing license for the piece....ie, you own a legit recording....then it's not legal, but they'd have a hard time screwing you for it.

Mind you, I had a copyright violation notice from angelfire once.....for my OWN work!!!!

Some artists have given "permission" for bootlegging. There is a list floating around somewhere of all artists who have said you can.

From memory U2 and REM are on the list...

If I have a copy of an album in storage in some chicks house in another city - is it legal to download, as I own a copy of the album?

And, if you called the police on your roommate for illegal downloading - wouldnt they just laugh at you? Not that I would do that - just hypothetical.

In any case, I thought even in the case of people trading clearly copyrighted officially released music the RIAA types have gone after people for making them available for others to download, rather than for the downloading they did.

On a slightly related note: Format shifting. Could be seen as bootlegging in some countries.

In Australia it's OK if you own the original copy, but you must destroy if you lose the original copy.

i dont really give a f*ck about if it is legal or not... anyway it is good for me

here in argentina it is legal to have whatever you want (speaking about music or video, obviously) if it is for personal use only... the ilegal part comes when you wanna make money with it
