Actually for me it's the other way around.
Was shoked the first time I heard All Day Long on a bootleg, to find out that the bit before the big upwardly arpreggiating strings, is a fuckin guitar. Once I knew it, I ignored it and went on playing it on bass.

They do exist in vast numbers, the majority are however set with the 4 normal strings, plus one lower and one higher. Hooky's is one of very few designed to be tuned like a guitar but 1 octave down. Shergold, the manufacturer, actually don't call it a bass, but a "baritone guitar".
Any 6 string bass can be tuned this way, but some will never be comfortable as they were built for funking low strings not playing tunes on high ones.
A normal 4 string bass, should not really be called a bass guitar but a "guitar bass". The former term makes it sound like a type of guitar (in the engerlish way of specific-general description). In reality it is an upright contrabass, a member of the violin family, which has been warped and shrunk into the style and shape of a guitar. This was largely because adolf rickenbacker had a friend who was sick as fuck of carrying a family car sized bass around.
