stephen morris' singing

is there a song out there where you can hear him sing? i realised out of all of the NO members, this guy sings the least. i'm not counting the demo version of ceremony with him vocals that is available on this site. the sound quality is so bad and i think his voice has been majorly distorted...he sounds like he's on helium!

just curious, cuz i can't imagine what he sounds like when he sings.

Snuckster - there is a demo tape about called Western Works (from 1980) which has a lot of Steve on vocal, but they are the same sessions that the version of Ceremony you mentioned came from, ie. poor quality. He sings like a sheep! CTB

That ceremony is on the JD box set - my computer hasnt got a sound card so I don't know if it sounds any better on CD than the file on the site

Ceremony on the JD box set is a JD rehearsal tape and has Ian Curtis singing on it. The one with Steve Morris singing is from the demos New Order recorded at the Western Works studio in Sheffield in July 1980. I've often wondered if there are any better quality versions of these demos as all the ones I've heard are very tinny and seem to run too fast i.e. vocals are too high pitched. I always thought Homage had potential if they had polished it a bit.

I think he sings on a "Subculture" remix. I think it was on the Substance Abuse remix album. Towards the end of the song, there are some pretty fucked up vocals and I know it can't be barney.

no joke. i always thought he was the one singing. who is it then? hooky? if its barney, it sure sounds very wierd for his voice...if you know please educate me in this.

could it also be martin's production making the voices not sound as they really do?

Sorry Ed, but it is definitely Barney on six of the 8 tracks, Hooky on Dreams Never End, and (though JS will no doubt confirm) Hooky on Doubts Even Here.

It's Steve's voice at the end of the 1987 version of "Confusion" though - I'm sure - when he says... "fooking Housemartins...yecchhhh!" or somethin. Other than that, Gillian does the spoken monologue on "Doubts Even Here".....

Saw him last week, Jim Morrison, at the Gold Blade/Abdoujaparov/Divine Brown gig at the Garage. Not quite as unstoppable these days......

I am convinced too that BARNEY actually sang on almost all the album with HOOKY doing 2 of the tracks only.Time is a strange thing and maybe things get a bit clouded over. Regards ROCKET MICK the early years..... I STILL PREFER THE NEW STUFF THOUGH!

The only things Steve sang were a couple of the tracks on the Western Works demo (Truth & Ceremony)and a few tracks at the early concerts in 1980 e.g. In A lonely Place in Boston (played with a drum machine to allow him to sing).

Steve can hardly talk, let alone sing...
