(cheeper) imitation, I'd say. The Moogish rif (that comes in from around 14 seconds) is very Crystal/BM too, so i'd say the re-mixer knows their influences.

I have to agree, It's similar to Hooky, but not quite there, Hooky has more sustain on his notes and it just doesn't sing like a Hooky riff, besides, I think Hooky would rather re-mix timberlakes face than his music.
Justin Timberlake is smart enuff to know to cover himself in others' coolness, and have other cool people imitate other coolness. He even imitated the Retro cover art for his last CD. I'm sure it's a Hooky homage, why not!? If they asked Hooky, why wouldn't he do it for fun anyway, Justin has brought sexy back and everybody wants to ride it.

I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with someone doing a hooky style bass line, I do it all the time! I was pointing out that I don't think timberlake is the kind of artist hooky would work with, he's a bit too hard for all that squeky voice nonesence.
If Hooky were to contribute a single note to a JT track, or anyone having anything to do with N*Stink, The Most Annoying Band of All Time, I'd be dissapointed.

ha! yer all get snobbish. timberlake, out of all of the remnants of boybands, is probably the most talented. some of his stuff is actually quite listenable. i, for one, wouldn't feel anymore embarrassed to buy a timberlake singles comp than i would buying... oh, let's say, hafler trio's "fuck."
Listen to the Pet Shop Boys' 'Minimal' off their last album. Throughout the second part of the song the bass is done absolutely consciously in the Peter Hook style (in fact it's played by Trevor Horn, mind you). But no surprises, aye?
It doesn't even sound like someone's playing the bass live. It sounds like Hookesque notes sampled and played through a synthesizer....The part kind of reminded me of Depeche Mode's Enjoy the Silence.
By the way, the song sucks.....I would much rather use those 10 minutes listening to Temptation or the full length Perfect Kiss.
