Temptation--Original '83 vs. Substance '87

Original is good but '87 is better, uplifting, powerful, danceable.

The poll should be of the four official studio versions, or at least the 7", 12", and '87. 12" totally tops the 7"--both from '82, mind.

82 12 inch comes in a close second.

so, it's not really a 'vs' as it's a "which one did you hear first" heard Substance 1st, really like the '83 12" version too close to call on which I prefer

First time I ever heard NO was from my sister's Substance tape, so that goes for Temptation as well...and that beats the socks off any other version done before or since.

The original is by far the best from a musical point of view as far as I a concerned, beautiful electronic elegance. BUT it sounds worse than a first year engineering student's first mix attempt. The 87 one SOUNDS great but the MIDI backing track and HORRIBLE Drumulator/SP12(00) snare on it is RANCID, and the tune has lost all it's wayward mystery.

How is it better musically? It lacks Hooky's soaring high note bits that complement Bernard's lovely "people in this world..." line which is also missing from the 7". Bernard's singing is a free for all on the 7" too; his intonation, diction, and emotion are all better on '87. Perhaps the synth sound alone is more upfront and compelling on the 7", but after that it's down hill in comparison. (Not trying to jump all over you here, just trying to make an argument on behalf of '87's arrangement and playing.)

both are good in their own right but I love the rawness of the '83 version.

Original 12" is better than '87, by a long way.

The '98 version is sound as well, shame there wasn't an extended version
