Was 1989 the greatest year in music?
Not being very old then it would be hard to say, but looking at the number of amazing bands that had equally amazing albums, i'd say so. You had albums like Technique, disentegration, stone roses, a reinvigorated Morrissey. Plus, there was Madchester, E and the rave scene which had not yet been tainted by some of the problems of later years.

Mmmm...can't think there's one "greatest year ever" for music, but 1979 certainly is up there, at least in terms of alternative music:

One of my favorite album/songs that was not mentioned above was REM's Green. I love the whole album, especially Pop Song 89, Stand, Orange Crush, etc. Although Green was really released November 1988, all of their singles were released in 1989.

Fucking hate all those $THING of the millenium programs that feature almost exclusively the last 3% of that time period.

My thoughts entirely. 1989 was the year of the backlash from the redtops. In 1988 the Sun was compiling its "What to wear at raves" guides (Smiley top? Tick! Bandana? Tick!) then in 1989 it was in full-on "Ban this Evil Filth!" mode.
Great,certainly,but depends on your age s'pose.Those of us of an older disposition will argue that there's better years,'79 for sure as someone has mentioned,'81 too &'83 was a favourite of mine too,tho' I think that was because I left school rather than there being any great albums,altho' it was the year of P,C& L 
The Raw and the Cooked is a great album, IMO. One of my favourite albums of all time, in fact.
Suppose nostalgia plays a part, perhaps. But I do think it's good.

You get one year from that period and I bet it was the same as today - a few great tunes, a load of alright ones and loads of shite. It only seems like a great era because we don't think about it as separate years.

But I stand by my comments regarding "millenium" lists.
The 80's probably produced more decent albums than the 90's. With CD's the 90's probably sold more but of a lesser quality.
i waslike what...8? yeah i remember debbie gibson and new order a lot from that time...my dad always played a lot and i mean a lot of oldies music so i know a lot of oldies music from the 50's,60's,and so on...a lot of music of that time was very upbeat where nowdays you have all this angst and shitty rap music...
1989 was one of the worst years of my life.My life was a complete mess,truth be told i never thought that i would recover......I did....Technique was on heavy rotation.1990 couldn't have come soon enough.
1989: great year. I split with my lass, moved back to the capital, got a lucrative job, partied hard, slept with dubious women, played Technique and Mind Bomb a lot...top time!

1989 was the fucking bomb - Technique, 1st time I saw them live, Nitzer Ebb Belief, 808 State/Happy Mondays/Stone Roses on TOTP, The Shamen Omiga Amigo, Front 242 Headhunter/Never Stop, Erasure Drama.
Lots of great stuff - nice summer as well.

I was just 17 in 1989 and was forced to emirgrate to Australia with my parents leaving my first love behind. It was a total disaster and..., we came home after 1 year!
2 years in music history I know well, 1972 (year I was born) and 1989. Why? because when they did the golden hour on Radio 1 the only 2 years I didn't know ANY music from was 72 & 89.
I had to wait a year to get my hands on Technique, my best mate kept rubbing it in how amazing the album was.

apart from, of course, the single from before the album, stand. which was then re-released after the album as well
85 was much better. Low Life, Smiths tour, Bunnymen tour, Sisters tour, tons of NO gigs to see and get tapes of, Husker Du albums, This Nation's Saving Grace, relegation battle from the Conference, all kinds of good happenings.
