Rihanna's song Umbruella was number one for 10 weeks (beating Gnarls Barkley but not quite Bryan Adams and Whittney) and I only heard it for first time the day it got toppled by Timberland (last Sat).
I was quite impressed that I managed to avoid such a ghastly song for so long, as I remember Bryan and Whittney songs being on constant rotation where ever I went.
An indictment of how sad the whole single genre has become?
I'm totally with you there. I still haven't heard the song (properly). How can that be ? I was asking my workmates yesterday how can somebody write a song about an umbrella and it's at number 1 for 10 weeks and I can avoid hearing it ? It was impossible to avoid Whitney & Brian's travesties. I looked up the lyrics to umbrella - thinking it must be something corny that couples buy to make up (Whitney & Brian's clever formula) - nope, they're just terrible. I've caught about 2 seconds of it on a Now That's What I Call Music Volume 546 advert, but was instantly forgotten. Of course if I really wanted to hear it, I could stick MTV on all night and I'm sure it'll come on, but that's not the point - it should be unavoidable. A bigger mystery than UFOs.
