With the release of Martin Hannett's Personal Mixes, it has got me thinking... it would be a good idea if there is a compilation of alternative versions of songs and covers that NO did. By alternate versions, I mean the raw versions of the song such as Stephen Morris singing Dreams Never End, or Blue Monday 88 without the sound effects. Pretty much, the rarities that we have heard on the NOOL Radio Podcasts. NO's cover of Anarchy in the UK is not a bad idea for a release, either. Just a thought

Theres a good reason why they weren't released. I'm not going to spell it out, but as a business kinda person....
Don't get all Ryan Adams on us and release everything!!! Not all ideas are very good-most alternate mixes were incomplete steps to the final mix-worthy only for obsessives
You could hardly call it a cover of Anarchy in the UK, Hooky playing the bass riff while one of the roadies screamed the first couple of lines of the song a couple of times! It was more of a "Sister Ray" than anything.
Once again, Retro rears its ugly head. For me anyway.
In classic New Order style, they fucked this opportunity up big style.
And as for Bobby Gillespie's live selection - I used to collect New Order bootlegs at record fairs in Newcastle, and had some absolute belters - great sound, great versions, and great banter from Barney and Hooky.
There's a lot of bollocks out there, but a whole lot of quality too - I'd like to hear the Temptation/EGG/586 medley

I haven't but I can imagine how the process works:
I write a song.
But I decide that it's actually quite shit.
So I put some extra work into that song, swap a few things round a bit, work on the lyrics and the melody ... until I'm now happy with said song.
I then release this song and I'm dead proud of it. Well done me.
Why would I then want to go and release the (in my opinion) shit version I initially wrote and which I think is, basically, still shit?
Which is surely where New Order are coming from?
The Personal Mixes CD is shite isn't it? Be honest, i just wasted £13 on it really. There are some things that do need addressing (Why isn't PFD on dvd?, where are the deluxe versions of the albums?) But other than that i think they've been done to death.
agreed , they missed a huge opportunity with retro, the live stuff ive hardly played and it certainly doesnt represent some of the stuff thats on boots.
the 8o western works demo could have ben included as well. when you compare retro with the bunnys collection from the same,(ish) era, theres loads of demos that are interesting acouple of takes on angels and devils which is brill. so more alost opportunity than,, lets have some more(crap)
saying that im just about to log on to amazon for the 3 joy division remasters , featuring,, songs ive got loads of times(4 copies of unknown for a start)

Before I get shouted down for even their slightest mention, but the Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, The Cure, and Echno and the Bunnymen have released remastered brushed up versions of their back catalogue.
Is this beyond New Order? I couldn't give a shit hearing demo versions of tunes, but hearing embryonic live versions (Tempation 81 for instance) or outstanding or interesting live versions is definately of interest to the fans.
I also made a complilation on my MP3 player recently and the quality of the tracks depended on when their source material was produced. WFTSC, Get Ready, HTS sounded great, anything off, say Substance sounded shite.

It's going on EIL for a lot more than £13! Nice to get in as a torrent, definitely not worth any money.
I reckon that apart from revamping PFD and releasing maybe some of the better recent gigs on dvd, they really should not touch the bootlegs. Bootlegs should remain just that.

Got loads of them in the new HMV in Bold St (Liverpool). EIL is just ripping customers off, always have always will.

Nail firmly hit right on head. Dave McCullough's Tolstoy jibe at the time of Still wasn't far off the mark either.

Indeed, weren't people on here moaning that the first print run of David Nolan's book had spelling mistakes in it?
What were they whinging about?
That was the fcuking demo version.

I have just read FROM JOY DIVISION to NEW ORDER.Only 11 years after buying it.I may read the ORIGINAL book about IAN next ...memory is gash.....but i must have bought it several years ago.
But do i want any demos......NAH.I have taken to listening to the PROPER versions of stuff like TOUCHED and CONFUSION again and i still find bits that i never heard proper BEFORE.I am just happy with my memories of the FACTORY years.The best part these days have been the PISS ups before the gigs.Only tainted by getting thrown out at LIVERPOOL before the PERFECT KISS came on.

alternatively it goes like this:
I write a song i think it's great, the basist thinks it's shit I kick up a stink and insist it's put on the album the bassist gets so pissed off he quits the band do i feel guilty, no, guilt is a useless emotion!
