Is there a story behind the video of "Regret" with the Baywatch setting? Has anyone asked New Order about it? Why was there two videos of "Regret"?
Regret Baywatch Video

The basic version is that it was shown live on Top of the Pops, and presumably set up to appeal to US audiences. Its not a video; Top of the Pops used to have links in those days to a US version of the show, and this was a set up 'live' performance, clearly costing a lorra cash. Was a whole lot more interesting than watching them mime to it in front of a studio crowd, which i think they did a couple of weeks later, as the song rose up the charts.
Why would something for Top of the Pops appeal to Americans. Baywatch was probably more famous outside of America anyway.
I suppose they thought it was funny and cool in a silly way, and I suppose it was.
A lot of cool bands that both Americans and Brits liked appeared on Top of the Pops.
Anyone ever seen Nine Inch Nails doing 'Head Like a Hole" on TOTP? it was from 1989 or 1990....its hilarious, as funny as New Order on Baywatch,
I am sure that the members of New Order thought the TPTP on Baywatch thing was funny. I like how the video shows David Hasslehoff bending down on one knee and watching them with an uber serious look on his face. Too funny!
I found this little article about this Baywatch setting.
Regret was recorded live on both occasions if my memory serves, though on the Baywatch appearance, whoever edited the video made it look like the band had fcuked off before the song had finished though. The Hoff never featured alongside the band cos he was too far out of shot, this is covered in David Nolan's book on Barney.
If yer sad (or observant) you will notice a live whoo on both songs.

There wasn't a US version of TotP's at that time. They filmed in Los Angeles simply because that's where they were (doing US press for Republic) at the time Regret charted.

Good! Baywatch made it big because of the Baywatch babes (i.e. Pamela Anderson), and not because of Mr. Hassel.
Good also because the Baywatch babes are not banned from New Order performance.
Indeed*!*
