when did new order switch over most of their electronic gear? there's obviously a marked difference between Low-Life and Technique, so it must've been in between there somewhere. The actual electronic songs on Technique sound rather dated and haven't aged well, but I think that cold analogue synth/sequencer sound up until 1985-86 has a sort of timeless quality.

I think that around the time of brotherhood, midi gear was becoming a lot more popular, I'm sure they were still using the voyatra synth for a few years after, maybe even on technique, but the older (less stable and harder to sync) stuff will have been off loaded around that time at a guess.

I think it's unfair to blame the equipment for the aging of certain tracks from technique, it's the style of the songs that has aged, whereas with low life, the more synth oriented stuff was not strictly of a certain style.

obviously all bands have to update their gear occasionally (music gear that is) and with that comes a change in sound, but it's better than being stuck in a rut.

Orchestra hits and sampled bass slaps....THAT's what dates it, they COULD have skipped those presets if they'd any taste

I think what you're talking about is the difference between the analogue gear and the digital. That is the change between the early 80s and the late and it affected anyone using current (at the time) equipment. The analogue gear has always sounded better, fuller, bassier etc. the digital gear has dated somewhat and isn't really used so much now. Nowadays we've moved back towards analogue, or at least some kind of analogue/digital hybrid.

It's the 'rawness' of that analogue equipment that I love Lowlife and Brotherhood so much.

Bring back the Voyetras!!
