24HR PP for the portrayals of AHW, Rob Gretton & Martin Hannett - all superb.

Control for the cast's REAL live performances as Joy Division and the way it was shot.

Can't choose between the two - enjoyed both for different reasons.

24HPP - while a good romp - has it's flaws. I didn't really like the Mondays "being" the major second part of the story because once you scratch the surface of drugs and booze they're not massively interesting. Same with the Hacienda really... I think the film (like the label) lost the plot a little bit in the last half hour. The romanticised final Hacienda scene took far more artistic license than say, JD playing Transmish instead of Shadowplay in Control.

What made it worse was New Order were completely sidelined post-hang sequence in 24HPP... all I remember is Ralf Little with a dodgy pony tail and some half-baked dialogue around an ugly red table.

It has to be said the 24HPP depictions of Gretton and Hannett were superior; Paddy Constantine is a fcuking hero for that performance as is Andy Serkis. The Hannett in Control had three lines and odd teeth; as the guy who basically shaped JD's sound I thought he deserved more of a role plus there are a wealth of mad Hannett myths to mine.

For me, Control did what any good piece of cinema should do and made an impact. With the amount of utter shite Hollywood is churning out I practically stopped going to the cinema until recently. Brilliantly shot, acted and directed - the last five minutes are so well put together they must affect even the most ardent cynic.

24HPP while well done in its own way is more of a chuckle-fest with Alan Partridge at the helm.

So, Control for me... all the way

Also for the actress who played Annik - phwoar!

I dunno. They are different genres. One is a tragedy and the other a black comedy. They only thing I didn't like that much about Control was that Anton tried too hard to recreate those classic J D images and TV performances, whereas I think the band was quite different when not posed like that.

Got my copy of the soundtrack to Control this week. I really like it, the voice clips from the film mixed with different bands, makes alltogether a really nice music trip.

So i suppose it's the same with the movies, they all make sense. Love the soundtracks to 24HPP as well, also the compilation "Back to mine" by New Order.

Watched 24HRPP again last night. The first half seemed very rushed watching it again. All the scenes seem dead short. The second half of the film covering the Mondays and the Hacienda /Factory downfall is way better. It's impossible to say which is the better film really , they each have their good and bad points.

I actually think that Tony Wilson's book 24 Hour Party People is better than watching the film.Captures the Factory spirit and tales more accurately. The film has too much to cram in

Probably Control, though I haven't seen it yet.

I don't understand what is so great about 24HPP. I thought the movie was terrible. I mean it had its moments, but it could have been so much more...I guess it fit the title though....what a shite title, could have come up with something way better. My biggest beef with the movie...NO was Factory's biggest, most successful band, yet they were hardly in it....what's with all the Happy Monday shots????

Aye , true.Factory's best years were the 80s IMO (well it deffo weren't the 90s duh) .Yet most of the film covers the early 90s/Happy Mondays.Guess that era would appeal to a wider audience.Partridges Wilson is ok but Consadine's Gretton is the star. Some good moments though

just got back from seeing it.

was somewhat different than I expected and took a while for me to get into it, but pretty good overall. cinematography looked really nice. covered the book fairly well too, so no surprises. lots of little details I would've loved to see in it, almost like it moved too fast in some parts, but I suppose I'll have to wait for the 4-disc 3+ hour extended director's cut special edition DVD.

the new order tunes sounded good, although I didn't really notice them until Hooky's bass came in. no TONY WILSON RIP in the credits. also why was Steve's name spelled wrong? At least Hooky got billed in the credits as "Hooky" and not by full name like the rest of the band. thought that was pretty funny.

so...errr...I'll second what most people have said. the joy division part of 24HPP always disappointed me because it moved too fast to build any emotion and was like trying to shove a sombre moment into an otherwise hilarious movie. didn't fit for me at all, but the parts of Wilson, Gretton, and Hannett were much better there. Control was very good for being a DRAMA though, so no real complaints there.

good acting (even if "Ian" didn't look much like Ian until he got a haircut), but some of the musical cues felt pretty forced. Considering the whole disability angle of the film, seemed quite ironic that Steve was played by one of the brothers from "Brothers of the Head." but i digress....

Control. The story is stronger and the acting is better.

24HR PP is hard to appreciate if you're not a fan and the comedy was overstretching itself.

Definitely Control.

24HPP was disapponting for fans because it didn't get into enough details to be truly interesting, and people who weren't into the Factory scene don't even know what's going on.

I cannot compare as of now.

A comedy vs a drama... you can't really compare, can you?

Control touched me the most, and I think I would need to see a translation to understand 24HPP completely

I´ll stick to 24HPP. Although Control is far more didactic for those who aren´t big fans and has a much more linear cut, I´ve found Corbijn´s direction kind of insecure. Of course, it ended up being pretty good for a début, but for me it fails as "cinema". Maybe it´s not Anton´s fault. The story itself is not really that great for a movie, is it? I mean... Curtis was not a Jim Morrison, there´s no police, sex scandals, drug abuse etc. for attention retaining purposes.

Also, the cast for 24HPP seems to be much more experienced, resulting on those amazing incarnations of the above mentioned Wilson, Gretton & Hannett - but Ian Curtis is better portrayed in Control, and Samantha Morton and Alexandra Maria Lara  were both great.

Must say the band did a great job playing the songs, that surprised me.

Completely unnecessary, but I have to ask where do they get all those gorgeous babes to play Gillian´s role? Lotti Closs, if you´re reading this, please contact me. :love2:

soooo,

I guess that means I'll take 24HPP...

comedy vs. drama.

around 95% of my movie collection are comedy stuff. From School of Rock to Airheads to Bill & Ted to Rock N' Roll High School.

But for these two, I would choose CONTROL! Awesome cover band too.

They were both excellent movies, but completely different in tone.

But 24 hr party people is the better film. The script, acting, direction are all really special. Couldn't disagree more that the movie would be inscrutable for non-Factory fans...when 24 hr PP hit DVD it spread by word of mouth, it was the movie everybody HAD to see, and suddenly Joy Division and New Order were household names with the youngsters overnight.

Control had incredible cinematography and acting ... but where was the script? It was the most minimal and predictable script imaginable. There was hardly any real dialogue.

I love both movies. I can't wait to have the Control dvd to have great dvd nights alongside 24 HPP, Brothers of the Head, Trainspotting, ...

But if you give me the choice between the two actors who play Stephen Morris, I would vote for Harry Treadaway in Control without any hesitation. :D

Liked Control,as it matched up well with pretty much everything I've read on Joy Division, and Ian's life story.. So in that sense,it offered nothing new to me..

24hpp on the other hand,is class on many levels.Great film.

i liked 24 hour pp when it first came out, but i eventually realized that this was because it was about a topic i am familiar with and was eager to see a story about. if you were to watch it without knowing the story (or real story), you weren't in on the total inside joke that it is. i now believe that it is an idiotic movie. i like steve coogan in it, but it is a terrible film. i don't like how any of the musicians are portrayed. it's great to know that actors like ralf little took their role very seriously and many who were involved were no doubt excited about getting the manchester story or legend, or whatever it is, told. but, it really wasn't told in 24hpp, was it?

24hpp is like one of those x-men or star trek movies, where there is so many friggin characters running about, and you don't get to know much about any of them because there's no time for development.

control, meanwhile, is more approachable because it doesn't assume you're in on the same inside joke. you can learn a lot through this movie. while it's cool to see bernard, peter hook, stephen morris, rob gretton and tony wilson, all very well portrayed, the story and art direction in 'control' is much cleaner because the focus is squarely on ian curtis.

24 hpp describes the life of Tony Wilson and the days of factory records ... Control is about the life of Ian Curtis. I prefer Control.

for the past two weeks, i've watched Joy Division movie/documentary, Control, 24HPP, and the Tony Wilson BBC special last year. And to be honest, 24HPP is shite, really. It is only entertaining for Factory/New Order fans, and the events that happened was not really introduced quite well. I mean a person who watches it and knows nothing/little about Factory/New Order won't really understand the what happened in the story or the events that happened because the scenes are poorly introduced, compared to the Tony Wilson documentary, when everything that happened was clear, even to non-fans.
