Have we ever done a thread or series thereof on the subject of definitive versions?
If not, I think it could be a good laugh and extremely informative, especially in light of the numbers of mad bastards here who've seen em stupendous numbers of times. Some of you guys could perhaps put context to certain live tracks that would enhance their value as "specimens". But I, as Victor Lewis Smith would say, dye cress......
I suggest we open discussion on the subject of which performance (highly preferably, but not essentially, a recorded one) of each song is The Cannon, THE version, the one that captures exactly what the piece and the band are about. In some (but few I suspect) cases, it will be the studio version, in some, a session, in some, live and so on.
Bootleg quality and availability should be considered but not stressed about.....a killer version of a track, the only recording of which was made on a minicassette dictaphone in someone's y-fronts, should not lose out to a hi-fi sack of shit.
I'm starting THIS thread rather than the actual discussion, as I am not sure how it should be done and structured. I believe Tim has some experience in such complex multi-threaded things, and so does M. LeBlanc.
Could we do an album per thread? would that be too chaotic? Or a song per thread? too spammy?
I would suggest tentatively that we do one song per thread, but one song per week, in album and track order. Threads would be locked (or better, kicked to BCD) after 7 days, so the forum doesn't drown. Or, we could do one per week and let each thread live for 21 or 28 days, meaning only 3 or 4 "live" threads respectively.
What say you?
EDIT: eg...BM Barrowlands 85(6?), it breaks down, then SOARS....exactly architypical of the song and band at the time.
PS: the first ballsack who posts "the definitive version is always the studio version" will be shot at dawn, and subsequent supporters of this false mythology will be burried alive with the dead bugger. Just so yous know
