Ian Curtis Was a TG Fan

Apologies if this has been discussed before but I've just been reading Simon Ford's TG book in which he discloses that IC was a big TG fan. Apparently he used to ring GPO and they'd have long conversations about various ideas and discuss, amongst other things, TG's 'Weeping'. IC was into this song in a big way (it's basically GPO's suicide note written when his relationship with Cosey had broken down irrepairably).

Also, and this is interesting if true, GPO reckons that a gig was being arranged in France when TG would play first then JD. At the end the two bands would jam together and GPO and IC would jointly announce that they were leaving their respective bands (he claims that IC wanted to do something more brutal/experimental).

GPO also claims that IC rang him on the night he committed suicide and sang 'Weeping' to him over the phone. GPO then rang various people in Manchester alerting them to IC's state of mind;he alleges was basically given the brush-off

Interesting stuff.

TG is Throbbing Gristle right? Yeah Genesis P.Orrridge said in the issue of Mojo from Feb this year that he spoke to him on the night he died

Ms. P-OORidge probably needed some free publicity and the Ian Curtis brandname works well these days.

Mr Megson has always had problems with boundaries, and his concept of the boundary between truth and fiction is but one, I fear.

TG = Throbbing Gristle (Industrial band from the 70's) GPO = Genesis P.Orridge (lead singer, of said band, Throbbing Gristle)

I've started making Porridge these last few mornings again.Still not quite perfected the amount of salt to put in though.Its a tough one

Regarding which part?

That IC was a TG fan? Or that he loved 'Weeping'? Or the joint TG/JD show/joint announcement? Or the 'last' phonecall?

I'm pretty sure I believe him re. being a TG fan as a LOT of us at the time were both JD and TG fans. Who knows about 'Weeping'? I'm very sceptical about the joint announcement part but it does sound like plans for a joint gig were at least being spoken about. As for the phonecall...

I don't suppose we'll ever know for sure.

He seems to "remember" additional bits every time he is interviewed. No doubt at all that Ian was a big TG fan, and I do believe that GPO had plans to work with Ian in the future, whether Ian reciprocated them is less certain. Joint announcements and final phonecalls are stretching it a bit though maybe.

On a personal level, 'Weeping' is a horrible thing, I can't listen to it.

If that's the sound and direction that Ian Curtis wanted to go toward, then no thanks. I'll have my New Order thank you very much. I like experimentation, but there's a limit to everything. At one point, I stop enjoying the weirdness and cry out for a little bit of normalcy.

Thanks for the bits on Ian Curtis by Mr. Orridge. Somehow, I do believe his views on Curtis. I'm naive and believe anyone really, but I can see Curtis as described. Art geniuses are very different and they often feel the need to be understood, but how could they? They're on another planet of thoughts. These people think too much and have too many ideals. I'm the most down to earth person you can find and these artists are too much for me. I respect them, but I get lost among these unattainable ideals.

Genesis does have a tendency to exaggerate the truth. The story about the final TG/JD gig seems far-fetched, but I do believe that Ian and Gen were friends and had a mutual admiration for each other's work. The phone call on the night of Ian's death is plausible, but there's no way to know.

Gen has a very recent interview on vbs.tv and he repeated the story about trying to warn people Ian may try suicide, but he felt at the time that people were giving him the brush-off, but he found out years later they were all at a wedding reception, so nobody could do anything.

Just getting into TG - it's astonishing how original they were for the time. I can definately see them being an influence / mutual appreciation for Joy DIvision and New Order.

I think Psychic TV's "I.C. Water" is a beautiful tribute to Ian. I did my cover of "Isolation" at a gig a few months ago, and threw in some lines from "I.C. Water" near the end.
