I'm looking for information about Martin Hannett

Hello,

I am a final year music production student at Huddersfield University. I am basing my final year project/dissertation around the recording style of Martin Hannett.

I'm looking for any information regarding his recording techniques, such as microphone choice and placement, mixing style, use of sound effects, which synthesizers he used, anything at all related.

Any contacts you may have who would know about Martin, which you wouldn't mind passing on would also be useful.

popular opinion seems to be that the main "technique" in the studio was annoy, confuse and alienate the musicians, in the hope of getting them to create something they didn't think they were capable of, apparently there was some degree of success with this.

have a read of "who killed martin hannett" it mentions some gear (other than drugs) that he used, but I don't think you'll find much more than that, unless you can get sme of the people he produced to give any info.

I'm sure quite a few people on here would be interested in reading your finished work (myself included) so best of luck.

Don't forget to mention the drugs.

Thanks for the replys, i'm currently reading the Who Killed Martin Hannett book and its quite a good read, and does have some technical information in it. Ill check out site though and i think i've read an interview with him on that site before.

The Hannett site above is definitely worth a look (although it hasn't been updated for years).

There is a radio programme lying around on the internet somewhere that I found a few years ago - presented by Mark Radcliffe - that has quite a few quotes on his approach to production.

Like the other poster above I look forward to reading the report...

BTW I am his project supervisor - couldn't resist posting -I normally lurk on here.

Thanks again for the replies, the radio programs were especially useful.

I've been looking for that first factory compilation of Hannetts productions for a while now, with no luck finding it. I'd imagine the tracks are similar to the other compilations that have been released, but like you say, its the sleeve notes that'd probably be most interesting.
