Drinking heavily and listening to the Peel Sessions

Barney once referred to Throbbing Gristle as "arty bollocks," but NO's 1981-82 material had a lot in common with the second-wave industrial and electronic acts that were around at the time. In particular, "Truth" and the early version of "5-8-6" fit nicely alongside Fad Gadget, Robert Rental and various other artists on Mute or Industrial Records.

I wonder if NO was aware of these artists and labels and whether they had any influence on NO's sound at that point. Joy Division played on several bills with Cabaret Voltaire, and I'm curious to know what the two bands thought of each other.

Sorry if this post doesn't seem to have a point. I'm enjoying a bottle of Sailor Jerry and rocking out at the moment.

I'm sure NO were aware of those bands at the time. But you forgot DUB! That's what really affected New Order after their arty stage (that is 1981). Think of Turn The Heater On, We All Stand, plus all the B-side remixes that were all dubs (apart from Confusion, but that's more of Baker's job than NO's).

interesting... i've been listening to this a lot recently, and am really into Senses and ICB. The early version of 586 is pretty cool too.

Peel Sessions is great. Really captures something unique (both sessions).

I know for sure in an interview Bernard said they were influenced by Throbbing Gristle. I don't remember which interview, but I distinctly remember it.

I'm glad something good came from this thread! I think I'll pull out my copy of the book Tape Delay and re-read the NO interview. Don't know if any of you have read it, but it also features interviews with Einsturzende Neubauten, Boyd Rice, Genesis P-Orridge, Cabaret Voltaire and many others. It's quite possible that Barney's mention of TG was in that book. Fitting, since I would go so far as to say the Peel version of 5-8-6 is pure EBM in the style of Front 242.

Quite surprized! In my old days #9 was a killer: one bottle could put you down or lose your head. I was told they put dimedrol in it, not sure if 'was true, but it did have a strange effect. That was the quickest way to get shitfaced.

I agree, I'm a huge fan of that early 80s electronic dance scene, and I'd certainly put that version of 586 alongside other 'pure' electronic dance tracks like Los Ninos Del Parque, Hot on the Heels of Love, and Ricky's Hand.

Hurt, EGG, and Mesh are also cracking underground dance tracks.
