can anyone confirm to me a little niggle in the back of my pickled grey matter,
before i got into neworder used to tape top40 on sun to listen on my walkmen ( as big as abrick), years later and into neworder dug out an old tdk to copy my mates closer LP, pressed play and can remember something like... and straight in at no38 its new order and thieves like us, was it played on top40, cant check as i used another cassette and told my mate and the tape went missing, so if you see this o'hara i would like it back, was last seen in farnworth with someone called beanballs

TLU got to number 18 I think (some anorak will google to confirm, no doubt), so yup, it was played on the chart countdown I'm sure.
Did indeed reach number 18 so would have got played on the Top 40.Seem to also remember Mike Read (he who banned Frankie) played it on his breakfast show a lot while i toyed with excuses on how to skive off school
Always reminded me of Altered Images for some reason, but seem to remember it was based on something else at the time.

Yup, went in at a low position then climbed to a erm... not quite so low position.
However, this is always going to be one of the most impressive stats:

Aye Thieves peaked at 18 in May 84 when they did it live on TOTP.Went down in the chart the next week , natch.
Still recall the very first time i heard it.Had me stereo on in my bedroom one Sunday night listening to Annie Nightingale's request show must have been late March 1984.Nipped downstairs to make a coffee and whilst doing so heard these New Orderish beats starting up on the radio upstairs.Thought it was Confusion actually at first so didnt rush upstairs and finished making my coffee
Got upstairs and there was Hooky's unmistakeable bass chiming out that Hot Chocalate Emily riff.Scrambled frantically to find a cassette to tape it and caught about 2/3rds of the song which obviously i played to death til the 12" became available in the shops
Annie also played the b side Lonesome Tonight the following Sunday.Right anorak me
