Martin Hannett lies in an Unmarked Grave for 17 Years

Tony's Ex:wife recently went to visit Tony's Grave in Southern Cemetery. While she was in the Cemetery she decided to visit Rob and Martin.

This is what happened:-

I had to get help from the office for location but found them both – and was horrified to discover that Martin Hannett – this genius and legend of our time – is lying in a totally unmarked grave (actually there was an empty plastic bottle of lemonade on it which I removed).

It is well known that Martin had no money when he died, neither did his wife and he had foolishly waived his royalty rights when he settled his legal case with Factory.

I cannot let this state of affairs remain. So much money has been made thanks to him!!

I would like to start a fund and wondered if you could help through your website? (I think engraved headstones probably cost in the region of GBP 1000).

There must be some quite wealthy fans out there who might want to contribute?

As much as I find it both sad & also a travesty,& that once word gets around,this will probably be put right by the people who should,I can't help but think that why Lindsay Reade feels it necessary for 'other' people,such as wealthy fans,to help out? I'm sure many would & would want to,but couldn't she put this right herself? It's like being outraged yourself,but getting someone else to complain.

Well I'm prepared to support this. £20.00 pledged. I'm not wealthy but the man gave me a lot of pleasure.

And I'd be happy to help set up and administer the fund.

Well said mate. I had to lower my Grandmothers coffin into a hole in the ground, and believe me I couldn't get away from there fast enough. She's had no headstone either for about 14 years. But as you say it's just earth and dust (although it can take a considerable length of time for a body in a coffin to eventually turn to dust.)

But, the point is; people are remembered by their works and deeds. Not a bloody headstone! And why the fuck should we (JD/NO fans) pay for his (Hannett's) headstone? I think if I'd money to waste on headstones it'd be spent on my Grandparents not some bloody record producers, who must have spent enough for plenty headstones on smack and booze; and have a family of his own.

I'm with you guys. Ms. Reade has published her book - possible in part due to Hannett's sonic legacy - surely some of the profits could be redirected in that direction [and what about Colin Sharp - no mention of a lack of headstone in his Hannett book I note].

If Hannett hadn't been such a piss/smack-head he wouldn't be in his underground box now (probably) and he'd certainly certainly had died with more cash.
